Light impacts heat

The colour of something impacts heat.

Lighter is cooler and darker is hotter. Imagining that once the Eridians have managed to fake the sun's heat/UV Grace can tell which rocks will be warmer/cooled without touching them and this is CRAZY. Or even an Eridian with darker spots commenting that they feel hotter in some spots and Grace is like "oh yeah your carapace is almost black there, the rest is a pretty light blue" and they're like "WHAT??"

Or even just like. Shade. On hot days shade can cool the area like 8-10°c (15-20°f). Imagine how fucking wild that would be to experience if you can't see the shade.

i like the idea of Grace gets so used to eridian culture he's basically an eridian. Even if he went back to earth he wouldn't be able to fit into it.

Like the reaction from earth if they somehow made communication. Finally getting on a video call with Dr Ryland Grace, Savior of the earth, and he's naked covered in jewels chittering and he's like yeah this is my mate Rocky we're bonded for life now

huh? Marriage. No no we're mates. Yeah. I layed his eggs. We have kids now. Oh and here's Adrian our other mate. Why are you surprised? Most Eridians have multiple mates.

Come back to earth? Why would I do that? This is my home. I have kids to teach, just like you do.

and then he makes these musical notes with his voice that the alien beside him seems to understand, and rolls his non-existent eyes at.

andy weir claiming his story is apolitical is weird and incorrect for a lot of reasons but the biggest one for me is that the two main characters are entirely, vastly different creatures from each other, meeting for the first time in deeply scary and vulnerable situations, and each choose to greet the other as an equal, with excitement, curiosity, and, pardon the pun, grace. I just think that's a really remarkable story to tell in the world we live in.

I know I'm neither the first or last to say it but I am 100% committed to Catch of the Century Adrian. The absolute ideal of Eridian beauty and attractiveness. Gorgeous. Brilliant. Witty. Charming. Fun. Beyonce with multiple Ph.Ds. And absolutely nobody on Erid understands how this utterly average, slightly neurotic engineer bagged them, much less how they resolutely turned away all other suitors when the Blip-A was gone so much longer than planned.

(Although, maybe, once Rocky has saved the stars and brought First Contact home to Erid, people start to understand what Adrian saw in them all this time.)
