The connection between football and domestic violence isn’t uncommon. A study shows that police receive increased calls reporting domestic violence every Sunday during football season [iii]. Researchers analyzed over 700 cities and counties using data from the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) of police reports, revealing that these spikes are linked to teams losing a game [iii]. In fact, domestic violence incidents rise by about 10% on days when NFL games are played, usually occurring in family homes and most of the time affecting women [iii].  This shows that the outcomes of football games can have a real impact on people’s lives off the field. It’s important for fans, teams, and communities to recognize these patterns and work together to raise awareness and prevent domestic violence from happening, especially during football season.

In the Woods All Animals Are Large

The difference between a cougar stalking a deer through gold leaves and a squirrel dashing over the underbrush is no difference at all, not when you’re listening from your backyard to the woods’ sudden rustling. The robin is the fox is the buck is the bear, one beast of wings and claws and antlers. Your mind is the same kind of chimera, wearing stroke, death, rupture, breathing fire. It’s exhausting, isn’t it, the catastrophizing, the endless possibilities? A relief, then, to sit in your backyard and listen to the crackling leaves. You have no control over an animal that lives outside your head. What’s coming for you could be anything.

"The human circadian rhythm is both defined by biology and dependent on context. From a series of popular cave studies, where subjects were placed in experimental conditions of total darkness and isolation, we know that the body has an innate rhythm. Biologists have identified its genetic basis in a gene called the CLOCK gene (Circadian Locomotor Output Cycles Kaput). But without access to environmental cues like sunlight or social cues like an alarm clock—cues called Zeitgetbers, or “time givers”—the rhythm doesn’t sync to a twenty-four-hour day. Our circadian clocks affect most bodily processes, from digestion and metabolism to detoxification, blood pressure, and hormone fluctuation. Among all the Zeitgebers, sunlight is by far the most crucial for setting the clock. In simple terms, human health requires a regular daily pattern on local time. 

Yet around the world, few are exposed to bright sunlight or total darkness. We’re not living in caves—we’re living in screen-lit bedrooms, fluorescent-lit offices, stadium-lit highways, always-lit factories; in warehouses, malls, movie theaters, and arcades. Over 80 percent of the global population is subject to some degree of light pollution at night, and 20 percent work night hours, likely missing morning sunlight. At this point a large proportion of us are living in a state that could be called permanent jet lag. When capitalist logic overrides both the body’s inclinations and the sun’s rotation, it essentially pulls the body into another time zone.

Alex Rivera’s 2008 film Sleep Dealer, a cyberpunk fable in which workers in Tijuana sell their labor hours to operate robots across a border they cannot cross, captures this sense of how working conditions create artificial time zones. Among the movie’s many other insights, which are to me startlingly and almost spookily relevant nearly twenty years after its release, is the revelation that the destruction of circadian time is the logical end point and the goal of extractive capitalism. ... 6. what books have you read in the last month?

like with her first novel Tell me I’m Worthless, i’m enamored of the promise and disappointed by the execution. there’s a delirious, lyrical middle section with a conceit so clever and richly thematized (one of the narrators’ erotic fixation on hosting parasites) i’ll definitely continue following her career. but like with her first novel, the plot and the ending are both bizarrely earnest and inconclusive. i don’t think the whole brainworms thing works??

Tipping the Velvet, Sarah Waters

i loved it so much i can hardly believe it. dazzling and delightful. i’d only read Fingersmith before, which impressed me too, but now i really need to read her entire works. i don’t know enough to make a definitive statement but this has to have been a landmark for historical fiction surely?

The Wall, Marlen Haushofer

read this by complete chance but it’s a sort of mirror to Annihilation! women "alone" in the so-called wilderness writing through a border but mostly around against a hermeneutic wound might be my favorite genre. if anyone knows more please send recs!

19. most disliked popular books?

hmmm the only thing coming to mind is The Stranger, which i hate. i hated Lighthousekeeping in a way that makes me think i would hate all of Jeanette Winterson.

oh i do have something more relevant to the spirit of the question maybe – so Circe has spawned an entire industry?? i had a good time with it, it was fine enough but i don’t think anyone needed more. i’m trying to be social so i let an acquaintance lend me something called Sycorax and yeah, it’s Circe, but bad, and extrapolated from The Tempest (although it doesn’t engage with… anything, really, at least in the hundred pages i managed to wade through: it just took the name and the witch title). so retroactively i might dislike Circe lol
