Tried to make an actual design for Hera
That’s how you know Nolan truly believes that trans men are men: now he can cast Page in a roll that doesn’t just exist to be a one-dimensional projection for men to be sad about.
We’ll know he believes trans women are women if Christian Bale transitions and Nolan immediately casts f!Bale as a tragic dead mom in a flashback who gets two lines of dialogue.
can i get the odyssey (2026) costume design rant 👀👀👀
YES
First off, I have to say I am not an authority on the subject.
I rarely if ever get to choose the time period I design for (my current project is based in WWII). But I’ve had to take plenty of fashion history courses, done a lot of research for various reasons, and this period is a personal love. If I screw up anywhere, let me know!
FIRST AND FOREMOST:
What. Was. The. DEAL.
With all the long sleeves and pants?!
I noticed it most on Telemachus, but almost everyone was guilty.
I genuinely do not know what time period was trying to be replicated here. I get that Christopher Nolan was trying not to reinvent the wheel, but? Why??
This is a very basic overview of the clothing of the time. Now, Ancient Greece lasted a LONG TIME, so this is subjective, but anything in this vein would be closer to the mark than whatever Nolan had going on.
Most of the clothing in Homeric times was straight rectangles or squares of fabric. Textiles were an extremely hard and labor intensive craft. So you took that big square and folded, pinned, and draped it into the shape you wanted without cutting the finished length of cloth.
Young men like Telemachus would have worn their chiton or peplos shorter. Older men and royalty like Menelaus and Nestor (who was ABSENT) would have worn theirs longer and accompanied by a himation or cloak.
While traveling to Sparta, Telemachus would have worn a chlamys, or a travelers cloak.
NOT his armor. That was a great way to get robbed, killed, or robbed and killed.
SPEAKING OF ARMOR
I get it.
I really get it. It looks SO COOL, BUT-
That man’s neck is wide open.
Homer described Odysseus as wearing a boar tusk helmet, which is actually a really smart move. Odysseus got that scar on his leg for a reason.
This is a good recreation of what the Achaeans during the Trojan War would’ve hypothetically been wearing:
Which, I get it, it looks goofy. But compare the brightness of this to this:
I mean come on. Not to mention they’re STILL WEARING PANTS-
If you can’t make a chiton look manly that’s ON YOU
Do NOT get me started on the Lastrygonians either.
Plate armor. In Ancient Greece. Thousands of years before such technology was available. If I kept going down this thread we'd be here for twenty years, so moving on.
Penelope. The MVP. She whom none of us deserve.
I have no idea what style or period this is supposed to be.
Women in Homeric Greece draped and pinned their clothing the same as men, just normally floor length (Unless, according to some, you were Spartan). Her gowns, to put it simply, looked too structured.
Her jewelry was honestly pretty accurate, aside from whatever is going on with that chin height chain necklace pictured above. I have no idea what that's about.
Homeric women, especially Myceneans, wore this gorgeous sun spot blush as well:
Bring it back.
Overall, I liked the movie more than I thought I would. The cinematography was phenomenal, as was the music, and the cast couldn't have been better.
I understand that Nolan wasn't going for historical accuracy, and I can accept that. The Odyssey is a myth. None of these characters are real people, not that we can prove.
Historical fashion, mythology, and history in general are some of my great loves. Costuming is the only thing that I ever really get hung up on when consuming period media, and that is entirely my problem, not something the whole world needs to accommodate.
It is nice to bitch sometimes though.
THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME RANT!
I told my husband that the Odyssey movie is full of pants...
Husband: very upset wife noises, not historically accurate then?
The fact they're wearing pants is extremely upsetting to me. Like fine, it's a new take on the story, I have no problem with that, but...??????? What is HAPPENING up there? Literally I was in a production of Antigone in college and we had to make concessions to modern obscenity laws and also having female performers capable of menstruation (I was terrified of having my nasty stained and very modern period panties showing to the whole world when Antigone gets thrown to the floor), but we were still wearing stuff that was at least recognizably more or less Greek. Ismene and I were literally in...basically peplos with less baggy tops (due to possibility of tits popping out during the trial on my part, and wanting the sisters to match on the director's) and sides sewn shut so as to avoid aforementioned period problems.
Nolan didn't even have that to deal with. You can show T&A onscreen. You can edit out period panties in post if you need to.
What is his excuse?'
in a world where happy rich people sell the discontent lower class the lie that money cant buy you happiness it is at least reassuring to know that our sole trillionaire is the most pathetic, unloved, miserable, alone human being on the planet, and that NOTHING could make him happy. get fuckeddd lol
"money can't buy you happiness" factoid actualy just statistical error. average wealthy person buys happiness every day. moneys georg, who has a trillion dollars and is miserable for 30 hours each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted.
happy pride
"Same sex marriage isn't important because all the rights associated with marriage should be things you can access without getting married" ok well you're not fighting for that either. So.
Where's that post that's like "people on tumblr see anorexia as a stupid thing girls do for fun instead of a deadly disease" ?
Like I wonder if maybe these women have something else in common besides being rich? Maybe something like being in the public eye 24/7 and having 1000000000000 people a day comment on their bodies in public forums where everyone including them can see and hear it??
Sorry I'm not done. We are really at the "women developing anorexia is actually Another Way To Oppress You" level of backlash to feminism and "every single thing on earth is about Marxism" type discourse on the internet now? Really? Women are developing anorexia, a deadly disease that fucks up your organs forever and slashes decades off your life, to Show Off How Capitalist They Are and oppress you? And this is a take coming from "innerchildabortionclinic." Something something the reason abortion is the only serious feminist issue the left still likes to talk about has everything to do with being perceived as "edgy" and absolutely NOTHING to do with women's rights or bodily autonomy or seeing women as human beings, as is I think made VERY evident by this "hot take" by "innerchildabortionclinic" that women develop anorexia on purpose to show off how rich they are and oppress you. God all fucking mighty crawl back into Hot Topic and leave sick women the hell alone!!!
like i am waiting for an MCU reboot but also the deployment of iron man in the mcu after 2012 has been disastrous for the ecosystem in pretty much every way and i fear we may never recover his characterization as long as i am alive
telecom service providers in india are getting orders from government to shutdown our internet. they might also mass delete the posts and videos online. i know this is not the content you followed me for but please raise voice for the people in india if you can. if you find any posts about the brutality that the police inflicted upon protesters, people seeking legal or medical attention, people needing donation for sanitary pads, food, water, masks, etc. on twitter or instagram, please share it. it's my humble request. this is our last day. they're applying emergency alerts and new rules from tomorrow but today we are standing here in rain raising our voices and we will continue to do so.
Indian authorities block and restrict online content documenting police violence at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar protests.
i am terminally A Sucker for characters who have a towering and generally earned ego about their own ability and absolutely no self-worth about themselves as a person at all. intoxicating combo.
Some of the 2010s-era Loki stans were annoying but some of them were very justified. They put Tom Hiddleston in handcuffs and a muzzle. Then they put him in chains and a collar. Then they had him look waifishly sad in a prison cell. Then they put him in handcuffs again. Then they chained him up again. Where else were teenage girls going to see that.
I get why people bring it up but everytime I see posts that are like "x fandom/community has a racism/misoginy problem" im like damn but at least its just them. would suck if it was the whole society thank god its just people who play a specific videogame
Or rather, a great many reasons
More reasons to avoid AI, not that we needed them.
“AI tools used in recruitment, for example, are more likely to recommend men over women, especially for higher-paying jobs, and even when qualifications are identical. Meanwhile, AI chatbots like ChatGPT have been found to advise women to ask for significantly lower salaries than men with the same CVs. In healthcare and public care sectors, AI systems tend to downplay women’s needs and are more likely to miss illnesses in women than in men. Even in criminal justice, tools like the American COMPAS have shown bias against women, overpredicting their risk of reoffending. Racial bias frequently creeps into these same tools as well.”
"Racial bias" (just say racism FFS) doesn't just "frequently creep into" these systems, it's right at the beating heart of them.
favorite bits of the cast interviews in the LOTR special features:
Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, Elijah Wood and Viggo Mortensen all taking the piss out of Orlando Bloom for going on about a cracked rib too much, while Orlando Bloom desperately tries to wriggle out of talking about it (special mention to Elijah Wood’s “oh it hurts, babes, and I can’t ride the horse, babes” and Viggo Mortensen’s “they can be very fragile, elves, especially the…Mirkwood strain…”)
Ian McKellen commenting that “they never did find any suitable underwear for Gandalf…”
Dominic Monaghan going on and on about how Viggo Mortensen apparently had a crush on one of the Rohirrim extras (who like a lot of the Rohirrim extras was a woman in a fake beard) while Vigoo Mortensen just mutters “one could perhaps say something about Mr. Monaghan’s…proclivities…”
Dominic Monaghan’s imitation of John Rhys-Davies ordering food at a restaurant for the whole cast. “You have partridge? BRING THE PARTRIDGE!”
John Rhys-Davies talking about an incident with the Lothlorian boats and saying “if an elf and a dwarf are in a boat…and…the boat goes under…let us say that the blame was not placed on the elf” while Orlando Bloom splutters “he’s a big guy, man!”
Elijah Wood talking about how the hobbit actors shared a trailer with Ian McKellen and sometimes they would hear inarticulate bellows of protest from his side when they played loud music in the mornings
Viggo Mortensen talking about how, while filming with those same boats, Kirin Shaw (Elijah Wood’s scale double) started telling him “if the boat tips over…save yourself…I can’t swim.”
Elijah Wood describing how Sean Astin would try to direct the helicopters to land while they were on location, while the other three hobbits were screwing around and throwing pinecones at each other
Christopher Lee recounting how he had so much trouble going up some steps in Orthanc with his long robe that he stopped in the middle of the scene and said, “I cannot get up these goddamn steps, Peter.”
Viggo Mortensen mentioning that he left a weekend rehearsal and went walking down the street still swinging his sword around, and promptly got the cops called on him
I swear I’m laughing so hard I can’t breathe
My fav LotR extra is Peter Jackson and Christopher Lee talking about how Peter was trying to coach Lee to be more vocal during his death scene, and Lee straight up was like, “That’s not the noise people make when they die to a knife in the chest. It’s *this* noise,” and while he’s demonstrating, Peter remembers that Lee was a special forces guy in WWII and back away slowly and lets him do this thing.
I really dislike this trope
the fact female hyenas are naturally more dominant
I’m neither a furry, nor into futanari, but I really feel like furry artists are sleeping on a futa goldmine wrt female hyenas. Violent matriarchies ruled by alpha females who fight for dominance and literally have dicks (well, up until they give birth for the first time, anyway, which they do in the most metal way possible, and technically they’re called “pseudophalluses” and are giant clitorises, but lbr, a dick is also a giant clitoris just with a urethra inside), where males are submissive and the lowest ranked in the pack. You cannot tell me that isn’t somebody’s kink. And yet…
