( the banality of that statement sits uneasily with him. he’d say more, but carver remembers his first year in kirkwall after — well. after. words didn’t help, and neither did drink or company, or being ran so ragged by meeran that carver’s thoughts were a tired flush of black behind his eyelids every time his aching shoulder blades hit the wooden pallet in gamlen’s hovel. he wishes he knew what to offer, how to assist, but carver knows so little about the dalish still, and understands even less than that. )

here, it rises: an anxious thudding in her chest, something coiling & uncoiling darkly in the pit of her stomach. the idea of speaking about the keeper only days after has her hesitate — too soon, will it ever not feel like this? — & she twists her hands roughly, wincing only slightly though her fingers ache. how could it not be her fault, after all? time after time, friend after friend —hadn’t they all warned her? merrill understood the consequences of her decisions, & yet —what a fool she was to believe that she would be different, more careful. no, she thought somberly, no, it’s my fault.
grief clasps her tongue & she swallows thickly, lips pressing into a thin line. it felt odd to her, now, that it would be carver she spoke about the keeper with, when only before their talks had been light, if not a bit awkward. it was unexpected, really, how heavy the words had come between them, pangs of regret & guilt occasioned thusly ( though she knows he only wants to help ). ` dalish burials are very beautiful, but i .. i didn’t get to see her’s. the keeper’s, i mean. ❜ she remembers, then, the way her remaining clanmates had shunted her away after merrill & hawke had emerged from sundermount, and she knew that her name would not pass their lips when it came to wishing life amongst those that still remained.
her ears twitch at the mention of bethany, and remembers the sister carver & hawke had spoken about, a girl she imagined to be warm & gentle, quite like sunshine. ` she seemed so kind, from the way you’ve spoken about her. she would’ve understood, i think, ❜ merrill says softly after a stretch of silence, her eyes darting swiftly to & from the man standing beside her. she feels, however different their grief may be, they both understand the deep unfurling of loss in their hearts, and the disquiet of soul that lingers after.
