i rlly hope it gets easier soon bc i am fucking losing my mind
Vit can you in your infinite Norwegian wisdom please explain why Sideræl is funny?
Okay so for those of you unaware: new Grimes/Musk baby dropped and like I could not care less what happens in those two's personal lives but they keep abusing my first language to name their babies so unfortunately I am forced to have an opinion.
Anyways this is what their budget fantasy name generator spat out this time:
Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, or "Y" for short
Now, I can't really say anything about Exa, Dark, or the nickname "Y", but allow me to explain why to my Norwegian ears, "Sideræl" sounds really funny and also like a terrible baby name.
"Side" means pretty much the same as it does in English. Like: not the main thing, the thing beside it, or the second best thing
"Ræl" on the other hand is a pretty fun Norwegian slang word, meaning "something cheap and of poor quality". Like if you buy a knockoff brand like First Price Cola instead of Pepsi Max all your bros will be like "hva er dette for no' ræl, er du dust eller?" ('what is this garbage, are you stupid?')
And Norwegian has this fun feature where you can mash words together to make new words, so by combining the two we get:
"Sideræl" [si:`dəræ:L]
Definition: some spare garbage you keep as backup in case the original thing doesn't work out.
If I heard a middle schooler call someone a sideræl I'd give them a stern talking-to about respecting women because I'd assume it was a slur.
But, when applied to a real life second child, it reminds me of a phrase we already have in Norwegian: "attpåklatt", which means an additional baby you didn't plan for but just sort of happened after your previous children got all grown up. (But it has a positive connotation like this is a very spoiled baby, everyone loves them.)
Sideræl sounds kind of like that but Worse. Like if everyone hated the attpåklatt. Naming your baby no. 2 Sideræl is... it sure is a choice.

I hate it when your parents are like “I know you better than you know yourself!” Like no you don’t
Like oh, you’re an expert on the inner machinations of my psyche? Name three of my top ten existential dreads
“But I raised you!” Ya and the only version of me that you know is the one I carefully crafted so that you wouldn’t ask me questions because it became obvious early on you couldn’t handle the honest answers
