I think the best River theme songs fall into one of two categories.

You have your realistic songs highlighting how River’s life sucks and he is a fuck up loser. The easiest genres to turn to for this category are alt/indie rock or emo/pop punk. Examples include pretty much anything by The Strokes, Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now, Pretty Fly, Blame It on Bad Luck, Loser, Everything I Try to Do Nothing Seems to Turn Out Right, and many, many others.

Then you have your delulu River theme songs, and I think here you’re best served by optimistic or defiant musical theatre numbers. Here we have things like Don’t Rain on My Parade, Tomorrow, High Hopes, I’ve Gotta Be Me, The Impossible Dream, Everybody Says Don’t, It’s Not Where You Start It’s Where You Finish, and so on. And it’s especially fitting because he has such intense main character syndrome, you can almost picture him pausing mid-op, turning to the audience, and waiting for the spotlight to fall on him while Louisa and Shirley are shouting “River what the fuck are you doing” from downstage in between returning gunfire while taking cover behind their totaled getaway car.
