Happy Pride Month, we're talking about gender and Icarus Morningstar (680 words)
Icarus Morningstar has always been a non-binary character, and throughout the series used exclusively they/them pronouns, up until Season 3 when Fable returned and their pronouns became they/them/he shortly after. This change was an out of character decision, and not a part of Icarus' story nor character arc. Their story does not touch on or discuss the topic of gender, despite exploring similar themes of identity and Icarus' sense of self with their eye, name and memories sometimes not being their own. I believe this was a missed opportunity, and left this aspect of their character disappointing.
After Fable's release from Purgatory in 'Unlocked', Icarus' name is revealed and shortly after, their pronouns gain a 'he' though this change isn't mentioned in the story, and was an out of character decision, meaning there is very little insight as to why this change was put in place. Though we can speculate, from Icarus' attitude towards their father, that there was some pressure from Fable for Icarus to conform to being his son; his crown prince and heir. Alternatively, we could infer that Icarus felt a desire to strive to be more like their father, and shifting towards a more masculine presentation — through changing their pronouns — was an attempt at that. Icarus doesn't technically make the change canonically though, as there is no discussion, question or internal debate/decision for this change in their pronouns which means it feels quite sudden when characters begin referring to Icarus with 'he'.
FableSMP has not avoided topics such as gendered terms or pronouns, with Rae explaining what pronouns are to Aax in Season 2, and upon learning Icarus and him are siblings, Rae asks "Do I get to call you my brother?" (S2, Ep 114 — Heyhay13, 6:24). The subject of gender is thematically relevant to certain aspects of Icarus' story as they explore themes of identity with their multiversal selves and their struggles with having an eye, blood, a name and memories not belonging with them. It would have fit very well into their pre-existing identity struggle to include their decision to change their pronouns anywhere in the canonical material especially when there is exploration into their relationship with their name.
As a whole, it is disappointing — as a member of the audience — to see a previously very androgynous non-binary character seemingly pushed towards a binary without any canonical exploration of that. This is not to say that in real life non-binary people cannot use gendered pronouns, I am non-binary myself and use he/they pronouns. Throughout the majority of their story, Icarus didn't use gendered pronouns. Until suddenly they did. I find that decision to be wholly unnecessary, as in my opinion it only takes away from their character due to the severe lack of explanation in the source material. There isn't even a discussion with Icarus updating those around them, it just happens. Characters start referring to Icarus differently with a limited explanation to the audience. When I first noticed something had changed, I was personally quite confused and disappointed when it was never mentioned in the story.
I have seen a similar thing occur with Midas, being a character that does not have as much of a fleshed out story as Icarus, I can see why their wouldn't be room for explaining why their pronouns changed and creators sometimes want to change things about their characters such as pronouns, but it is also a pattern I have observed with the number of characters that use they/them pronouns exclusively in the SherbertQuake Cinematic Universe feel as though they are dwindling, as more and more of them now use additional gendered pronouns, which is not a commentary on the new characters being added but rather the decision to retroactively change a large number of these pre-existing character's pronouns.
In summary, Icarus' change in pronouns towards the end of FableSMP feels out of place and it is disappointing that it wasn't explored during the series and even more so that they were pushed towards a binary at all.
