Personal Life: To buy from a second hand store or “thrift” is considered a sustainable act as you are making use of something someone has decided not to use. This impacts the environment as the average American throws away 81 pounds of clothing each year. This clothing accounts for 9% of the waste in the US. Thrifting can be inexpensive and beneficial to the environment.

Did you know that most wrapping paper is not recyclable? Most of the fancy wrapping paper with images and shiny bits are lined with plastic, making it not suitable for recycling.

Last year I used recyclable brown paper wrapping paper, which worked fine, but this year I decided I’m going to save on waste AND money by using the newspaper/flyers I get every week. The amount of flyers we get every week is absurd, and I definitely do not look through them, so I’m sure others are not either.

So instead of just throwing them in the recycling bin, I saved a bunch and am giving them a second purpose by using them to wrap gifts. I find that they are a lot easier to use than traditional wrapping paper. Then I tied string around the gifts to make them more festive, which can be reused over and over.

Why spend money on something that is literally made to be ripped open and thrown out?

Personal Life: To use old newspaper and flyers as wrapping paper would decrease the amount of waste produced during holidays. As most wrapping paper is not recyclable because they are lined with plastic, it is important to find an alternative which is more sustainable.

“Soapack” by Mi Zhou,

Central Saint Martins post-graduate student Mi Zhou has created toiletry bottles called Soapack that are cast from soap and melt away once they are no longer useful.

To make each Soapack, vegetable oil-based soap is dyed using pigments from minerals, plants and flowers and formed in a mould, in a process similar to slip-casting ceramics.

A thin layer of beeswax is used to line the bottles to make them waterproof, and prevent the liquid contents from dissolving the bottles before they are used up.

Users can keep Soapack bottles in a dry place to preserve them, or rest them on a soap dish and allow them to melt away on contact with water and with use.

To complete her concept Zhou consulted with Yanhao Shi, a soap artisan, and Luis Spitz, an expert in the soap industry

A standard plastic bottle can take up to 450 years to break down, and non-recycled plastic often ends up polluting the ocean.

Personal Life: To buy products that do not produce waste when empty, would not take up the space of an empty plastic bottle in a landfill if not recycled. A plastic bottle can take up to 450 years to breakdown and if not recycled, it usually ends up polluting the ocean. Mi Zhou created this product with the intention of sustainable life without sacrificing anything.

#13 bamboo toothbrushes

Bamboo grows very fast, so it is the perfect material for an item that needs to be replaced every three month. Unlike plastic. A plastic toothbrush is used for a couple of weeks and then stays on this planet for several hundred years, since it will not biodegrade. That makes no sense. Switch to bamboo. Plus: You can just burry the old brushes in the backyard.

Personal Life: One may think a plastic toothbrush is considered sustainable as you reuse it over three months and then you throw it away. Although you are reusing it, a plastic toothbrush is not biodegradable and will take up space in a landfill for hundreds of years. The switch to a bamboo toothbrush is an important one as it is biodegradable and will not add to our plastic waste output.

Professional Life: I have never realized the amount of plastic I waste when throwing out dead pens and markers. If you collect them, they can be reused for future pens and markers. Schools and businesses should take advantage of this service from Crayola since they go through a great amount of plastic through markers and pens in one year.

I was inspired by my friend to make celery juice. I don’t have a juicer so all I did was blend it in my blender with some water, then strained out the pulp with my nut milk bag. It was easy peasy, and didn’t require a lot of clean up.

There are a lot of benefits to drinking celery juice in the morning, I recommended giving it a try! My dad has told me twice recently how great celery is, which has been a shock to him. Personally, I love celery and eat it a lot, but this is a good way to consume more of it all at once.

Personal Life: Buying celery juice or other smoothie like drinks can not only cost more than homemade versions, but usually come in a plastic cup. Making homemade drinks would not only help me financially but also reduce the amount of plastic I use. Even natural food stores like WholeFoods use plastic cups!

Personal Life: To further my reduction of plastics when shopping, reusable bags are an easy and sustainable way to gather goods. In some areas of the US, plastic bags are not used and are frowned upon as they produce so much waste.

Zero waste bulk haul: Baking soda, brown rice penne, hemp hearts, chia seeds, quinoa, peanut butter (in an old candle holder) and vegan protein powder.

Personal Life: To buy items in bulk would allow me to use reusable containers to store foods in. As I normally buy peanut butter, pasta, oats, and flour in typical name brand packaging, this would allow me to reduce my output of waste when buying groceries.

I just started using reusable bamboo pads as another small step to reducing my waste. If you use cotton pads, I recommend investing in reusable ones. Like most things, we don’t realize how much waste they produce. When you factor in the packaging they come in, plus using them once every day or two, the waste adds up. Not to mention the energy it takes to produce them. These are from Marleys Monsters and they’re great!

Personal Life: Cotton pads and make up wipes create a lot of waste on their own plus the packaging they come in. To buy or make these reusable pads would reduce the amount of waste I use daily and allow me to save money.

It’s been a few months since I purchased any nondairy milk at the grocery store. I’ve just been making my own oat milk, using rolled oats I bought in bulk, (which is soooo cheap). I’m saving money while also saving waste 😎

It’s 1 cup of rolled oats, 3.5 cups water, and a pinch of salt. You can even add some vanilla extract if you want a sweeter milk.

Personal Life: Nut and oat milks are becoming more and more popular as dairy milks are frowned upon. Recently, I found out that nut and oat milks are not complicated or difficult to make. If I made the switch to homemade oat/ nut milk, I would reduce my waste and save money.

Personal Life: Reusable straws and straw-less cups are becoming normalized in many areas of the world. This rubber straw can become compact and easy to travel with compared to a metal straw and does not disintegrate in drinks like paper straws.
