Ishimondo & Mondo proposing to Ishimaru ??
I hope this is to your liking! For the sake of this being possible, this is set in an AU where same-sex marriage is legalized in Japan.
Mondo shouldn’t have any reason to be nervous. He’s known Ishimaru for years now; there’s not a single thing about themselves that the other doesn’t know. In Hope’s Peak they were inseparable, and now they aren’t much different when they have the time to be around each other. There’s something that pulls them together. Mondo doesn’t know what the hell it is, but he’s sure one day he’ll find out what exactly makes them so compatible.
After all, after today, hopefully they’ll have forever to figure it out.
The ring sits heavy in his coat pocket. It’s not the time or place to propose, really–after all, a cluttered kitchen at 9:00 PM on a Monday wouldn’t be anyone’s first pick for a proposal spot. But Mondo’s just not sure if he can wait any longer. So, like the impulsive idiot he is, he isn’t going to wait any longer.
“So, um,” Mondo says, looking at Ishimaru, who is currently wiping down the counter with extreme concentration. “I have something I wanna do.”
“That’s not very specific,” Ishimaru replies, not looking up from the task at hand.
“Haha,” Mondo lets out weakly, not feeling it. “It’s just… somethin’ that I’ve been thinkin’ about for awhile, now. I just think that we’ve been together for a long time, now, and I was wondering if… y’know…”
Ishimaru still doesn’t look up. “Pause,” he commands, although Mondo knows he doesn’t mean to make it sound like a command. “I must finish wiping these counters. It would be best for us to talk while making eye contact, after all!”
Mondo doesn’t hold it in any longer, choosing to seize the opportunity before he second guesses himself and backs out, “Fuck, will you just marry me? Or whatever?”
Now this seems to have caught Ishimaru’s attention. He’s dropped the cloth and is now looking up at Mondo with wide eyes. Well, there sure isn’t any taking it back now, he thinks, trying to pull in all the confidence he can muster. He thinks that if his brother was here right now, he’d be proud of him.
“Or… whatever?” Ishimaru echoes.
Mondo rolls his eyes. “Not whatever. Just… marry me. I mean, will you marry me? It’s your choice, I fuckin’ guess. I just… after we’ve been together for so long–”
“You want me to marry you,” Ishimaru says, not as a question, but rather a statement.
“Yeah. I just asked you. Like, twice. I even… oh, fuck, the ring! I forgot,” Mondo admits, face flushed as he reaches into his pocket and pulls it out. It opens with a snap. “I got a ring. Of course. ‘Cause that’s what you’re supposed to do.”
“Are you gonna answer or what?” Mondo demands, tired of the embarrassment. He just wants a clear answer so he can either move on to absolute joy or the five stages of grief.
“Of course I’ll marry you,” Ishimaru clarifies. “I apologize for making you wait. I didn’t… know what to say, I suppose. How strange. I always know what to say.”
Mondo laughs. “Yeah. You do.”
“Thank you,” Ishimaru whispers, “it means very much to me. I never thought I would have a moment like this, truthfully.”
“That’s stupid,” Mondo declares. “You’re amazing.” Ishimaru smiles.
“How much did the ring cost?” Ishimaru asks, sliding it onto his ring finger with interest.
“A lot. We won’t be eating out for the next few months, probably.”
Ishimaru shakes his head with amusement. “For such a beautiful ring, it makes sense. But why now? Why here?”
“‘Cause I wanted to,” Mondo grumbles, shutting the box and setting it aside. “I had to do it before I decided to wait longer. I don’t wanna wait anymore.”
“Oh,” Ishimaru responds, at a loss for words. “Well, then. I want a June wedding. And who should we invite? Well, there’s the obvious, like Chihiro, Sakura, Naegi…”
Ishimaru begins rattling names off, and Mondo listens with interest as his to-be-husband basically lists every person they know. He’ll listen to every word Ishimaru has to say.
Because he loves him, or something like that. (He loves him a lot.)
