Note: Since my old masterlist is getting notes again (and I'm hosting @tbb-appreciation-week this year), I thought it's a good time to release a new version with a lot more resources. If any of you know another site or thing that it's missing from the list, let me know and I'll include it!! [Altho, I'm getting this close đ€ to the hyperlinks limit on this thing đ]
Note 2: To avoid tagging the 3 people from whom I got multiple resources repeatedly, I've placed 1-3 asterisks between square brackets after the links, depending on the OP. I give the respective credit to them in a legend at the end of the post.

WRITING IN GENERAL (For those who don't want to die like Stormtroopers)
SlickWrite: Completely free; online. Checks grammar, punctuation, flow, and writing style according to different settings (including fiction writing).
ProWritingAid: [RECOMMENDED] One of the most thorough online proofreader I've ever used. Although when using a free account gives extremely thorough feedback, with +20 different in-depth reports, for only the first 500 words. However, you can earn a premium account license (for a year or for life) if you get 10 or 20 new users signing up for free; (if you wouldn't mind doing so using the link above and help me earn mine, please). The settings allow you to check your writing according to your needs, from general to formal to creative. It has a bonus that you can check depending on the genre you're writing. For example, in creative, you can choose romance or sci-fiction (there are 14 sub-genre in total). And just like google docs, you can share a document, and people can view, comment or edit it too.
LanguageTool: [RECOMMENDED] Another excellent proofreader. It also has a word limit in free accounts, but if you use the add-on for Google Docs, it counts each page as a new document, so hitting the word limit is nearly impossible. It helps you to rewrite a sentence (3 a day), even if it doesn't raise any flags; it's very useful for when your sentence is grammatically correct, but it doesn't feel quite right.
Grammarly, Hemingway Editor: No so great, but they do the basic job.

Really just relate to Lieutenant Commander Data. Like.
He loves his cat. He doesn't understand human emotions, but he's so kind. He likes engaging with fiction on the holodeck. He likes art, because it's so human, something he would like to be. He cares so much about his crewmates, to whatever extent he's capable of. He's curious. He is learning and trying so hard all of the time.
I am rotating him gently and slowly in my mind.
aight fuckers Iâm doing it Iâm spending a full $4 to watch the first lotr movie, for the first time
so like I get, you know, power and malice and cruelty were âpouredâ into the rings, but like. what did they actually put in those things. what fuckin gold gives a ring malice. why did the elves only get three.
holy shit itâs Agent Smith with pointy ears
this ring was made of weet-bix and nutri grain
it was in this moment, when all hope was lost, that issieldor-whoever took up his fatherâs sword -
IâM SORRY BUT IâM LAUGHING THE RING GIVES THE BIG BAD GUY LIKE DARK MAGIC AND A DEMON ARMY TO CONTROL BUT EESEELDOOR PUTS IT ON AND HE JUST TURNS INVISIBLE
holy shit I just experienced seven and a half minutes of introductory exposition by a mysterious lady who apparently thinks VERY little of hobbits
omg is this WHOLE movie exposition
it has been remarked by some that a hobbitâs only real passion
is for food
FOOD
a wizard is never late
says Ian McKellan, wishing he was Julie Andrews, Queen of Genovia
I know absolutely nothing about either of these two but I already fucking love their relationship itâs beautiful
OH SO BILBOâS THE FUCK THAT CAUSED ALL THOSE JUMP SCARES

tbh though if i were mccoy iâd be pretty fucking fed up with spock too. imagine youâre a doctor, you dedicate your life to learning how care for hundreds of different life forms and species across the galaxy, and then your wife divorces you, which leads you to enlisting as a doctor for starfleet. this is WAY outside of your comfort zone, you hate adventure and youâd rather be sittin on a porch in the sun with some sweet tea in hand and your daughter on your knee, but you ainât got nowhere else to go, and who are you if you arenât a doctor? youâve dedicated your whole life and so much more to healing. so you enlist, you get assigned to a starship. not your dream job, but if thereâs one thing leonard mccoy knows how to do itâs treat patients. and then THIS MEDICAL MARVEL MOTHERFUCKER comes in with his fucked up gene spliced half human half vulcan biology and the rarest most obscure blood type even among vulcans with ZERO precedent for his existence or medical baseline and also happens to be THE WORST PATIENT IN HISTORY. REFUSES to sit still and follow instructions. always making smart ass comments about your silly human emotionalism. youâll get insane fucking readings and be like âspock i think youâre dyingâ and the bastard will answer with a straight face âyes. thatâs just pon farr.â âcan you tell me how to treat it?â âno.â and then just walks out of the fucking sickbay. youâre constantly busting your ass trying to figure out how to keep this human-alien catboy mixânâmatch medical nightmare from hell alive and healthy and all you get in return is backhanded compliments from an emotionally stunted fruit. and you canât even complain about it to your best friend because heâs too busy doodling this obstinate motherfuckerâs name all over his notebook while eye-fucking him on the middle of the bridge. hell iâd be an alcoholic too.
itâs just hard not to think about the fact that in 1915, JRR Tolkien went to war not with but certainly in the same army and many of the same battles as his 3 best school friends, all nicely upper class young men who had never known much loss, and only he and one other came back alive - and a couple decades later, he wrote a book in which 3 nicely upper class young men (and one very excellent gardener) who have never known much loss go to war together, or at least they start out together, and they all come home alive. (Though one cannot bear it, and does not stay.)
What more it wasnât just losing his friends, he was a commanding officer of a battalion of working class men. All farmers and miners from the same area of Lancashire. He felt affinity for them, but wasnât allowed to socialize between the ranks due to military protocol and he hated it.Â
"The most improper job of any man ⊠is bossing other men. Not one in a million is fit for it, and least of all those who seek the opportunity.â
I donât think it was even 6 months later that he contracted trench fever and was sent home.Â
His entire command was wiped out in one charge shortly after, the majority of a whole countrysideâs youths slaughtered while he survived. Youths who were brave and steadfast, but thought of as lesser than their superior officers while still being the ones carrying the actual battle. Youths who deserved fellowship, respect, and above all to go home and dance with their own Rosie.
âMy Sam Gamgee is indeed a reflection of the English soldier, of the privates and batmen I knew in the 1914 war, and recognised as so far superior to myselfâ.Â
TRIES NOT TO CRY
There is a reason Frodo, who represents the English gentry, in the end falls and is caught by Samwise, who represents the common man.
But there is a soldier in Lord of the Rings who does not come back, and I donât mean Boromir.
I mean the being who was a common hobbit, but who became corrupted by darkness and poison, whoâs face is described in ways reminiscent of a gas mask.
The soldier who doesnât come home, who is poisoned by gas and stress and insanity.
Is Gollum.
The Lord of the Rings repeatedly stresses the horrors of war. Eowynâs entire arc is about the truth of warfare versus the way itâs glorified. She starts out glorifying war and combat and soldiers, even when her own brother is telling her war sucks and is terrible. And then in the end, she sees first hand what war does to people.
Aragornâs entire arc isnât to be the steadfast hero saving the day, itâs to hold the line in terror and horror and blood while the overlooked folk are the people who save the world. And then, what makes him a king, is not his skill in battle, but his healing hands.
Which then ties into both Eowyn and Faramirâs arcs. Eowyn goes into healing not because sheâs a weak and meek woman, but because war is horrible and saving lives is better than taking them. Aragorn is glorified within the text for his healing, and so is Eowyn.
Also, tying into the common man thing, in the movies itâs Faramir but in the books itâs SAMWISE who questions what brings a man so far from home to fight in a war and if he is really so different.
LOTR is anti-war propaganda.
And this is why I donât get people who find Eowynâs fate to be anti-feminist. She doesnât become a healer because sheâs a woman, she does because itâs the right thing to do. Both her and Faramirâs futures are to renew the world. Thatâs a good thing.
Pretty much everyone who lives gets a wildly different job at the end of the book.
(I do think Ăowyn has a point about not wanting to be left behind, plus her depression, PLUS Wormtongue, but yeah: becoming a healer is not a demotion. Itâs literally the kingâs job.)
Hello Iâm here to talk about an opinion that isnât so much unpopular because people donât like it, but because it is splitting hairs and basically an argument based in semantics that sane people reasonably do not waste their time caring about it.
I am neither sane nor reasonable and therefore think about this a lot, and get ready to pull out a soapbox and type the Text Wall of China any time I hear people offhandedly contradict this opinion, and so I have come here today to die on this molehill, and write the over-long post of my dreams, because fuck it, itâs my blog.
Drumroll please:
Sauron is not The Lord of the Rings
The Lord of the Rings is the main antagonist though, so furthermore,
Sauron is not the main antagonist of The Lord of the Rings
I internally go insane every time someone says âSauron, the eponymous Lord of the Ringsâ or âThe antagonist never actually appears in Lord of the Ringsâ or uses Lord of the Rings as an penultimate example of having a flat âevil for evilâs sakeâ villain. This is mostly in YouTube videos so Iâm not calling out anyone here.
So who is the Lord of the Rings? Where do I get this shit? Why should anyone care?
I will tell you in far too much detail under this cut, because I told you I was gonna be extra about it and this is already long enough to inflict on my followers without their consent.
