Being a part of this project coming together was something very special.  Patrick's final images speak to the spark of a first meeting's potential and to the opportunities the right space can create. The ease of movement felt by the photographer as well as by the cast shows through, giving the campaign the sense of real connectivity it set out to convey.

Behind the Scenes with Patrick Fraser

Working with Lauren Watson at Brand Salon, has its perks.  The Chicago based creative agency is teaming up with Patrick Fraser to shoot Hilton Worldwide's Meeting & Events Division, Hilton Connect.  He captured emotive, natural shots that aligned with the look and feel for the brand and pulled the viewer into the meeting and connected face to face.

Patrick put his movie magic lighting skills to work to capture authentic stills of moments the talent shared on set. Using a continuous light source, allowed the talent to relax and interact naturally during the shoot. It also gave Patrick access to unique angles and greater flexibility, since there weren't any flashes.

My interview goes to Russia!

When Russian photographer, Alexander Bulanov contacted me for permission to translate my interview on the bidding process, I thought I was about to be the victim of the next email scam.  

Turns out, Alexander is not only for real, but celebrates the same love for sharing relevant and interesting content that Heather Elder has been posting for years on her blog, Note's from a Rep's Journal.

For as much I enjoy eating up the content on the blog, I'm also lucky enough to contribute to this interesting conversation!  My first interview with Heather on the bidding processes was published after we met at Le Book NYC!

Alternative Careers in Photography

I’m excited to be among the talented panel for Alternative Careers in Photography on March 13th!   Melissa Hennessy and the Portfolio Center at Columbia College Chicago continue to offer an evolving set of programs designed to help students make well-informed career choices.  As a Columbia student, I took full advantage of the resources at the Portfolio Center.  As alumni, I’m excited to be included as one of those resources!

For every student who thinks (or knows) they don’t have to be the photographer to make an impact on the photography industry, there are plenty of art buyers, producers, photo editors, digital techs, agents, stylists, gallery owners and curators to validate that career path! 

Join us Thursday, March 13th as we hear from a panel of artists who began their careers as photographers and went on to find fulfillment & reward in other areas of the photo industry.  Each will speak about their past roles in the industry and how they arrived in their current & very supportive roles in our photo community.

2014 Texas Photo Roundup

Portfolio reviews are some of my favorite things to do.  It's a rotating door of new and exciting photographers to be inspired by.  Last week I had the pleasure of participating in this year Texas Photo Roundup in Austin.  The review panel was just as exciting at those being reviewed and I was in very good company.  Austin wasn't too bad either.

Texas Photo Roundup is produced by the generous mind of Jasmine Defoore, who wears many hats, most impressive of which is curating incredible imagery for photographers.

Texas Photo Roundup is a production of Austin/San Antonio chapter of ASMP, I Love Texas Photo, and the Austin Center for Photography.

Candace Gelman & Associates Portfolio Show

This week few of my favorite photographers from Candace Gelman & Associates came by Upshot for a portfolio show.  We had an incredible turn out and the charming photographers drew in everyone from creatives to producers to copywriters.  CG&A was the perfect fit for a portfolio show this week!

Marcus Smith showed off some of his new sports work and I was happy to high five him for his recent PDN's 30 under 30 award. 

Lars Topelmann and his facial hair made everyone with a DIY habit jealous with his handmade PRB iPad stand.

Etch Pop Laser Lab for Tsingtao

It's not often I get to research and source art work that is not made with a camera.  For the Chinese New Year, I'm adding laser cutting and wood block carving to my list of resources. 

Marshall and Chester at Etch Pop Laser Labs in Portland took our inDesign file and translated it to the most beautiful piece of three inch thick cedar.  The precision process rendered even the finest type designs with accurate detail.  The client loved them so much we ended up ordering two more for gifts!

January 31, 2014 marks the Year of the Horse and Tsingtao is celebrating the Wood Horse—a combination that occurs once every 60 years—to make Tsingtao the natural choice to celebrate the pride, authenticity and cuisine associated with Chinese New Year. Bilingual point-of-sale materials and commemorative secondary packaging reinforces the brand’s authenticity with both Asian market and General market consumers during its key selling period.

Behind the Scenes with Kristyna Archer

We got in the shower with Kristyna Archer for a new Grundfos campaign that promotes the company’s On-Demand Hot Water technology.

Grundfos' goal was to create a fun, clever campaign that captured the mission of the innovative system—which aims to conserve water, money, and time.  Kristyna delivered on the playful, sexy and daring direction, we couldn't help but play along.

Brian Bailey for New Balance 680

In November 2013, New Balance came to Upshot with a challenge:  Translate the high performance 680v2 Runnovation campaign into visuals that truly resonate with the everyday health and fitness consumer.  The key was to make performance running aspirational yet attainable. In one shoot day, we managed to hit three city parks in Pasadena, capture four hero shots with seven talent including two toddlers, two strollers AND four product lay down shots! All made possible by Brian Bailey and his rock star crew.  I knew Brian would have the energy to keep up with seven seasoned runners and two toddlers for a ten hour day! The combination of ladders, apple boxes and getting down low made for some winning shots that had our client feeling confident and Upshot team looking great!

Portfolio Show Bernstien & Andruilli

I’ve been hosting portfolio shows for a little while now.  I’ve hosed at a few creative and branding agencies, a magazine and dozens of one on one portfolio shows at workshops, events and on a slow day at work.

I feel lucky to have access to such talented artists.  To create and feed these relationships with conversation in the form of a portfolio review is one of my favorite things to do as an Art Buyer.

Unfiltered access to the photographers that make exciting work and inspire me to do the same is something I dreamed about nearly every day in photo school.  Now, when I’m able to call in a portfolio (Yes, I’ve actually CALLED in a portfolio - just ask Brian Finke) or when I schedule a portfolio show with my favorite rep I pass that excitement on to creatives and other Art Buyers alike!

This week few of my favorite agents from Bernstein & Andruilli came by Upshot for an all agency portfolio review.  We had an incredible turn out and the energy was positive and engaging.  Besides staking rightful claim as the premier artist management agency, they also represent some of my favorite photographers and minty-fresh new talent I'm always excited to see!

The ingredients to cooking up a successful portfolio show at the agency level include managing the expectations of everyone in the ‘kitchen’, so to speak.  Char Eisner of Leo Burnett details the changes she’s made within her own department to make these shows more successful.  Read more about it on Heather Elder's blog.

Luckily, B&A was the perfect fit for a portfolio show this week!  Expectations were met and exceeded from all parties!  We’ve recently worked with a small handful of their talented artists and I tend to pass out their gorgeous promos to creatives around the office like candy.  So when I sent out the invite to their portfolio show being hosted within the wall of Upshot attendance was high and conversation was engaging. Most recently, we worked closely with Joey L. to shot Troy Palamalu for P&G/Head & Shoulders.  We also had our eyes on a few very talented photographers and new illustrators that we’re excited about working with in the future!

Summer Lecture Series The Art Institute of Austin


This week I spent the afternoon with a classroom full of students from the Art Institute of Austin as part of their Summer Lecture Series.  it's part of a week long series designed to expose photography students to professionals working in the creative industry.  Everything from photographers, illustrators and video game designers to creative agency leaders, art directors and art buyers.  I fall into the last category.

I’ve always remembered the professionals that came to speak to my Photo I and Studio II classes when I was at Columbia.  I was interested in the creative industry but at the time I didn’t understand how to apply it.  Therefore, everything that came out of the people on stage was pure gold.  They’d paved a path and unearthed a small piece of creative real estate that seemingly provided an outlet for their art form AND money in the bank. 

That day, my lecture told a short story of the path that lead me to the Art Buyer chapter in my career - which was not a straight path but always within the walls of the photo industry.  More excitingly, I drew out the structure of the positions within an agency,  in what ways it’s wildly different then Mad Men (even though we have a kegerator in the lunch room aptly named ‘Happy Hour’) and talked through dozens of promos.  The sheer amount of mail that appears each day is intense - mailers, books, prints, etc...  So, to help communicate what makes a good promo and what make for a promo that ends up at the bottom of the pile, I brought in examples from the last few months that were excellent executions of what promotional material should be.

I was fortunate to have a few friendly faces in the audience.  A photographer-turned-professor that I went to college with and a few students that use to rack up school credit with all the one page spreads I hired them to shoot while I was working down the street as the Photo Editor at Austin Monthly Magazine.

Cate Parr for Rosatello

Rosatello wines are sweet, just like Cate Parr.  We came to her with a delilghfully rough concept and she was able to turn our idea into something so fresh it could have been published on the cover of Vogue Turkie or Deutche, which is fitting since that is where most of her work is appearing! Rosatello is a new, young and fresh Italian wine brand that’s inspired by the original Italian product launched in the 1950s.  Since then, Rosatello has been re-crafted to suit the contemporary palates in the US.  Challenge:  The sweet wine drinker already has her “go to” wine that she’s satisfied with. Sweet semi-sparkling wines make every social situation more fun. We shouldn’t have to wait until some glamorous, Sex-in-the-City type of night to break out the bubbles.

Le Book Connections NYC

I've managed to hit up two Le Book Connections events this year!  Most recently in NYC and the first ever Le Book Connections Chicago!   Before becoming a regular at Le Book events, I did my homework and read up on what it actually was that people came to Le Book to accomplish.  This event has a reputation for being visually overwhelming, so to break it down, I visited my go to source for all things industry insider news: the blog of Heather Elder.

Besides being a fan favorite at these things (no need to elaborate on the specialty cocktails) I've been following her writings, critiques, perceptions and experiences with all things Le Book for longer than I'd like to admit.

Even if you know what to expect walking into Le Book Connections, it can be visually overwhelming.  What I needed for NYC was a plan of attack.  My first mission was to visit the reps I've formed phone and email relationships with and in the spirit of Le Book, make a face-to-face 'connection'.  With a little research I was able to map out these reps and the agencies I wanted to visit based on my clients needs.

While we were both in attendance, we somehow managed to miss each other at last years Le Book Connections in Chicago!  Regardless, I know we have very similar thoughts about how great the event was!  In fact, Heather listed her top ten reasons why it was so great and while I can't argue that Chicago holds a smaller market, I share Heather's thoughts think it was a successful event for not only the agencies and reps, but for the art buyers and creatives as well!

Thankfully and finally, we were able to unite our online-born friendship into a tangible Le Book Connection in NYC!

Behind the Scenes with Colin Beckett for Corona Extra

Colin Beckett has been crafting his on-set skillzzz for a while and I try to get some time with this guy every chance I get.  He’s one of my favorite photographers to work with and also my favorite to drink whiskey with.  He’s got the hot tip on every Logan Square boutique restaurant and he’ll show you all of them.  

It only seems fitting that he’s continuously shooting delicious food and eatin’, sippin’ and photographin’ delicious food and craft beers.
