“Deep Aqua Mirror”
Preview to a shoot I did with a friend. More to come :)
For my senior thesis idea I am going to photograph Lolita fashion in the style of Japanese artist Imai Kira. I am really excited to be executing this idea and showcasing how beautiful the fashion is through the photographic medium :)
Research questions
Topic: Lolita Fashion Question: What makes the fahsion so likeable? How does one deal with the misconception that the fashion is age play?
It’s pretty self explanatory to say that influences can be found all around you. It can anything, food, music, art, nature, etc. However, it is how one perceives what they see and how they interpret what influences them that is important.I have recently found new influences in my life that have an impact on my creativity.
The first influence is singer Melanie Martinez. Once a contestant on The Voice, I came upon Melanie after her appearance on the show. It was through a friend’s status on Facebook of Melanie Martinez’s music video called “Doll house”. I related with Martinez’s childlike rhythms and doll like aesthetic. When her full album entitled “Crybaby” was released I immediately listened to all of her new songs. There was not one song I disliked and they inspired to start sketching potential photo ideas. I think it’s her adolescent style and lyrics are what really influence my work the most.
My second influence is Japanese artist Imai Kira. I was first introduced to her work through a Japanese fashion brand called Angelic Pretty. Imai Kira did the artwork for the brand. Her feminine images and delicate themes are inspiring, especially the way she arranges her subjects and gives them interesting props. Like Kira I want to incorporate more props that enhance my photographic content.
Thirdly, I have been influenced by fellow photographer Tim Walker. I often wonder if Walker ever struggles creatively because when I see his photographs and I am always blown away with how he creates such whimsical worlds so beautifully. Walker inspires me to strive and make beautiful photographs
This post involves a shot from one of my favorite shoots. The photos were taken by legendary photographer Tim Walker. Mr.Walker is renowned for his very whimsical and fantasy themed photo shoots that include a fashion element to them. The photo presented here is part of a series he did reflecting the retrospective career of fellow creative mind Tim Burton.
The content of the image depicts characters from two of Burton’s films. On the left we have a model imitating Lydia Deetz from Burton’s 1988 film Beetlejuice and on the right is Edward from the 1990 film Edward Scissorhands. It’s easy to understand why these two characters were showcased as they were and are iconic characters from Tim Burton’s films. So it makes sense photographing these characters as part of the photo series.
The form of the photo includes the subject matter on location placed directly in the center of the photograph. The two models show a deadpan expression, most likely not to distract from the beautiful wardrobes they are wearing. However, the expressions fit the dark style that is Burton’s work.
I think Scout approves of the new slippers
Being back at school gives me so much motivation to do my best this semester. I can’t believe it’s the final year!
