I can' speak outside of what I know for my type of hair. But here it goes:
Don't cut it. Hair dressers tell you it's supposed to help the growth but it's not true. Let it grow, leave it alone.
Don't wash your hair every day. Unless you work on a job that makes you dusty or dirty every day. Shampoo strips away the natural oils of your hair that are supposed to protect your strands. If you're sweaty or just like the feel, water alone should cover it.
Golden rule is: Shampoo is for your scalp. Conditioner is for your strands. if you shampoo your strands, you make them brittle and dry. If you condition your scalp, you plug up your follicles and get oily flat hair.
Leave-in conditioner keeps your strands protected the longer they get. Always coat your ends to keep them from loosing shape and splitting. Your hair is like a plant. Keep it moisturized.
To prevent oil build up on your scalp, your hair needs help distributing the oils. The people from the past had it it right with the boar bristle brush.
The natural material is friendly to your hair and it guides the natural oils to coat the length of your strands helping your hair look silky and soft.
Braid your hair before bed or when you're not focused on going out. Like, when you're just vibin' at home.
This keeps my form and shape and my strands from tangling or breaking. The longer your hair, the more vulnerable it is. Some people use satin bonnets but it's not super workable for my type of hair.
Use a detangler brush when your hair is wet. getting rid of knots is best when your hair is wet. It's more flexible that way and it prevents the strands from breaking or becoming frizzy. To get rid of knots dry, best to just use your fingers.
Proper products are key. Common brands are not the best. Containing too much alcohol and other chemicals that do your hair more harm than good. They're built to create dependency. They're brands that create friendlier options that are much nicer to your hair. Naturally, they're a bit more expensive but not by a lot. I'm personally a fan of Hair Food products.
I mostly use their Cacao line that's made for curly hair. But sometimes I alternate with the Pineapple one that's made for long hair. My personal routine is a wash once or twice a week. I use the shampoo on my scalp most of the time only once unless I really need to double wash and then bypass the conditioner and go straight to the hair mask (the round container) since it's like the conditioner but on steroids. After that, I apply the leave-in conditioner on my damp lengh, Not the scalp.
After that I either let it air dry on its own or I use a blow-dryer with a diffuser. The diffuser is key to protect the length and health of your hair. It's an essential tool for curly or wavy hair.
Lastly, I avoid tying my hair in any way that pulls at my scalp or creates tension on the strands. Again, this is to keep it from splitting or breaking. Softer ways to keep it away from my face like bandanas, wraps and lose braids are key.
Keeping it natural is the best you can do. No dyes. No straighteners. No sprays. Again, I can only speak for myself but I hope it helps anyway.
