Reflecting on comm design studies as a course, I feel like I’ve learnt a heap but haven’t really been as disciplined as I would like to have been throughout it’s duration. One of my objectives for the course was go above and beyond the expectations and have my work done with time to spare before each deadline. That definitely didn’t happen, but it’s something I’m learning from even now as I write this.
I was as attentive as possible in lectures, although I still get confused about the timeline of the historical events we touched on. I loved learning about the early writing forms such as mesopotamian cunieform, and how we applied that in workshops.
The aspect of the workshops I loved the most were when we were tasked with “finding” letterforms, whether that be finding them in our bags, in our surroundings, in magazine images.
Out of all the historical art and design movements discussed as part of this course, the most memorable to me was postmodernism. In particular, Memphis Group. I don’t know why I liked it so much, I just thought it looked cool, and I’d love to furnish my house in that style if I get one in the future.
Now that that course is finished, something I would like to continue on with is making zines.
