Final Digital Triptych
this is my folio one section two sound editing. All is my own work. This never really worked and it won’t let me open the page on my laptop to edit it so this is the best I can do
Folio 1 – Section 2: Evaluating Digital Experiments Student Name: Emma Smyth
Before commencing on your Final Digital Artwork, evaluate your experiments so far:
Describe how your concept has developed from your Sound Art & Painting to Sound workshops.
When doing my paper and fabric manipulation pieces I incorporated my sound art into it by directly tracing one of my sound arts pieces onto the cartridge. Which became part of the fabric manipulation compositions. In a few of my digital manipulation pieces you can see where I have directly incorporated my sound art into the digital collage.
2) What are the 6 digital manipulation techniques in your experiments that you like the best?
I really like the transparency technique and layering, as a result of this it makes my pieces look very busy. Some sections of my digital collages have an almost Xray filter and this creates a very interesting, unique and almost scary appeal. Some of my pieces have been layered with one of my collages that include strips of coloured paper, and this manipulates my portrait. For example, my portrait layer is normal with no filter. However, the layer on top is my collage with strips of paper which have the Xray filter and the strips are going through my face. As a result, my face has the Xray filter except the strip that goes across my face which allows my natural unfiltered face to come through. In one of my other pieces, I have used myself portrait as a base and layered a collage on top. The collage includes branches from a tree. The way I have layered the two pieces make it look very similar to my folio one section one final piece. I also really like the contrast tool as it helps to really sharpen the photo. I also like the different levels of transparency. For one of my pieces, I used a very low transparency for the top layer and left the bottom layer untouched which almost looks as though you are looking out the window and that the top layer is a reflection on the window.
3) Describe what the digital techniques communicate in each of your experiments?
1: One of my pieces is a portrait with one of my mixed media collages on top. I have used the Xray filter to create a morbid look to convey the idea that every living thing eventually dies.
2: For one of my other pieces, I have used the layering technique to create a busy composition. My portrait is the bottom layer. I then layered part of my final mixed collage on top, and then I layered two photos from my theme on top. The busy appeal and many branches and leaves help to convey the idea of the human race dying and nature taking over once again.
3: In another experimental piece I used the layering technique. The layers are very faint to create the illusion of looking out a window and seeing nature.
4) Describe what the colour communicates in each of your experiments?
1: The mix of the warm, cold and almost neon colours of the Xray filter almost creates a night vision filter on a camera. Which can relate to my theme as it shows the natural differentiation of temperature in nature and in the body. Using this filter creates an almost creepy and morbid look.
2: In one of my pieces the bottom layer is part of my final mixed media piece and it includes earthy colours. I have set the contrast high for this layer and it manipulated the colours and makes the colours look dirty which could convey the idea of the dirt in nature. For example, the dirt in the ground and trees
3: For the piece that looks as though you are looking out the window, I have used a filter that emphasises the greens and yellows of the grass and leaves as well as the blues of the sky. This almost creates warmth indicating that it's possibly a warm summer's day. The sun is a prominent part of this piece and the way the filters have emphasised the colours it helps to create a sunlight beam effect.
5) Describe what the composition communicates in each of your experiments?
1: One of my experimental compositions creates a feel of looking out the window and into the natural landscape. The sun beam effect leads your eye from the “window” out into the landscape which could also convey the idea that the person looking out the “window” has now seen a new opportunity for nature and life.
2: One of my experimental pieces is very similar to what I have in mind for part of my final piece. It has the xray filter which creates a creepy almost morbid look. I have overlaid one of my experimental mixed media collages. The composition is busy but not too busy. Part of the collage is tracing paper that I have scrunched up. As I have overlaid it on top of my portrait, it has made that section look like water as the Xray filter makes it blue which fits my theme very well. Considering that in the portrait I am in the bath with the water behind my head, this effect is perfect at conveying that.
3: Another one of my pieces is the same portrait as the last experiment. However, this piece has four layers which has made the composition very busy and almost unclear. The bottom layer is my portrait, I have then layered part of my final mixed media piece on top. I have then layered two different photographs from my theme on top. In the portrait my eyes are closed and there are branches and leaves over my face. Therefore, this conveys the idea that when the human race dies nature will take over and become once again the main living thing on earth along with animals.
6) From this reflection, how will you make your final digital artwork communicate your concept?
I plan to make my final piece a triptych and set it out like a column.
Digital techniques:
I really liked the combination of many of my experimental pieces therefore I will bring two of them together to create the perfect composition. I will use the transparency technique to overlay a collage on top of the base which will be my portrait. The layer on top will be the collage that has the strips of paper that when layering on top, reveals my unfiltered face underneath. I will also set the contrast high to sharpen the piece altogether. I will also use the Xray filter for the top layer to create an interesting unique look. The Xray filter will contrast well with my unfiltered face. I will also add another layer, one of my amazon rain forest photos from my theme to add more character. This will also overlayer on top of my face and the leaves will make the texture of my face look very interesting.
For the other part of the triptych, I will again use my portrait as the base, however this time my eyes will be closed. I will then layer one of my mixed media experiments on top which includes the drip water effect and by layering this on top it will make the piece very similar to my folio one section one final piece.
For the final part of my triptych, I will use part of my final mixed media collage pieces as the bottom layer and will layer one of my photos from my theme on top to add depth and character. For the bottom layer I will use the contrast technique to sharpen the piece. This has created a dirty look for the colours which has given a very interesting look.
Colours:
I will Use the Xray filter for one of the layers which will bring lots of colour into the composition. The mix of the warm, cold and almost neon colours of the Xray filter almost creates a night vision filter on a camera. This could symbolise the natural differentiation of temperature in nature as well as in the human body. One of the layers will not change much in terms of colour, I will stick to the natural greens and browns of the ground, straw roof and palm trees in the Amazon.
For the second part of my triptych, the collage layer on top will have the Xray filter which will create a morbid and creepy look. The blues will symbolise the cold temperature of a dead body which links to my theme as it conveys the idea that all living things in nature die.
For the final part of the triptych, I will layer a photo on top and use the Xray filter on top which will help to make the shapes on the layer underneath stand out and will also create an unusual look. The Xray filter helps to make the blue stand out which relates to the water in my theme.
Composition:
I will layer my portrait, one of my final mix media pieces and my amazon rainforest picture from my theme to create a very busy and eye-catching composition.
For the second part of the triptych, the collage over the top of the portrait includes my sound art which could symbolise the heart monitor fading and the red paper, candle wax and splattered paint could symbolise blood.
For the final part of my triptych, I will layer one of my photos on top of part of my final mixed media collage. They fit well together as the bottom layer has coloured paper which will almost create a border for the photo on top. The photo is brighter and livelier as it shows the branches, water and grass. Whereas the collage underneath is dirtier and darker looking which will create a contrast as the collage represents dead branches and dead leaves.
