"Get out of here and get a decent grade." Emma slid back behind the table, shifting over the roots and the knife towards herself. "You should reheat your cauldron though." Quickly she began to cut through the ingredients, showing off? Maybe. But the work kept her mind off other things. "And then you can drop them in."

"Sure there will be." Emma tossed herself over. "If not you could always just prance around in it, anyways. Make your own party.”

"If I leave there is a change you'll blow up the whole school." Emma muttered under her breath as she finished packing her things. The girl had to be looking for problems at this point, reminding herself to keep her cool. Midway from stepping out behind her desk and making another comment she stopped herself. “I could just help you with it. Save everyone the hassle. If you’d want.”

"That is not how you are supposed to cut those." Emma instructed the other student as she gathered her things. Having finished her potions work earlier, she was preparing to leave the classroom but was distracted by the other student's struggle to properly prepare their ingredients. “It releases all of the scent too fast when you do it like that.”

"All done with homework." Emma shrugged. As adept as she was in potions, sharp comebacks to Slughorn and other professors had her loosing favor so keeping up with as much work as possible seemed to be the obvious solution. "I'm just not a fan of...misplaced items."

She nodded in reply. "Yeah. We're the same year I'm pretty sure. Narcissa, yeah?" She had a sharp enough memory to recall the girl from potions classes at the very least."

“ this is jus’ EXTRA CREDIT. “ rufus explained, “ we covered the protean charm in sixth year, but I’ve been challengin’ myself with findin’ other ways to use em’. found a way to link the protean charm to a patronus, handy for communication. “ he wanted to STAND OUT when he started at the auror academy. he hoped that a few of his experimentations would pay off. when it came to academics, rufus had no inhibitions. he knew he was GIFTED and he had a lot to offer the world. if only he could learn to be vivacious and special, since you weren’t anyone important in this world, if you COULDN’T charm a crowd. something he’d been taught by his father. “ yeah y’know last year and all o’ that. “

"I was about to say. Didn't think you'd be one to still be working on sixth year work." She barely still doing sixth year work, she knew she was an exception to most teachers when it came to academic advancement, and lately she was just hoping they wouldn't rescind it. "I could see that working out well. Good out in field work." Despite her current inhibitions, she was still intent on training to become an auror when she finished school. "Have you tried it out yet? Or is it still theoretical."

rufus had always KIND OF been a loner. the company of others was often a hindrance rather than a welcome notion, he preferred the solace of a good book or a quiet corner in the library. once upon a time, emma had been one of the exceptions but their paths had meandered in different way. he didn’t take offense when she didn’t ask him how he was doing. he wasn’t one for niceties, anyways. “ oh the charms one? nothin’ too special, just an EXTENSION on the protean charm for ol’ filtwick. “

"Oh, he assigned that to my class twice. Figure he thought most of us could do better." She shrugged. There was was still a surprising element of casualness to their conversation. Lately, she felt she needed to better connect with her friends considering she always had so few. Yet, it was nearly as difficult as keeping a straight path nowadays. In recent times, she had not seen much of Rufus but couldn’t help to think that perhaps having kept themselves closer would have benefited their current placement in the dangerous times that were seeping into the castle. “Sounds as if you’ve been quite busy then.”

Emma nodded in agreement and glanced back towards the castle. Crowds were just something she was barely accustomed to. She could handle them quite well, but she would rather not. "Fine." They had known each other long enough to know that they were not the best conversationalists. And she still wasn’t one to share her happenings unless it was drastic, and even then she’d rather lay low. "Or you could just tell me about your essay because I am almost sure that is what we are both more interested in.

rufus SHOULD HAVE known better than to be doing his homework out on the grounds on a breezy day, however, the library and the common room was congested. he himself was feeling a TAD CLAUSTROPHOBIC.  witch weekly had done another expose on his father and he could feel the sting of a thousand eyeballs glued to the back of his head. as such he’d picked an oak tree under which to do his work. the wind had other denizens of course, it ripped away his first scroll and rufus desperately chased it. it landed near someone else’s feet. “ ‘scuse me, can ye pass me tha’? it’s my charms essay and I’d hate for it to sully. “

She appreciated the cold, breezy weather. Anything was better than the ocean of rain that seemed to fall on the castle at least once a day. The sharpness of the air was good for clearing her mind. She had only been out on the grounds for a few minutes before the parchment brushed along her feet. "Careful, it's damp out here still." Emma leaned down to snatch up the scroll from the ground. "I would have thought you were smart enough to not leave loose paper around outside. Especially if it is an essay."

"It's not hard to figure out the passwords." Emma shrugged and swung her cauldren between her hands. "Thanks for the offer of help though. Last time I can to retrieve something stolen from me whoever was in here attempted to freeze me in place. I won’t be bothering you any longer.”
