Thoughts

It’s been just over a year since I visited Auschwitz, a visit which prompted me to change my life for the better. It’s true that everybody has different responses to seeing such a horror in real life; no pictures can truly capture how we all felt that day, and it’s an experience I don’t think anyone can fully explain and do it justice. I do not want to trivialize the lives lost with this post. This is my personal response to what I saw a year ago, a response I could not articulate until now.

I have been struggling with anorexia since I was 16. I would run 8 miles each morning, which subsequently led to osteoporosis as my period stopped and I became more and more underweight. Visiting Auschwitz made me realise how fucked up my relationship with food had become, that I was willingly starving myself whilst millions of people would have given anything be in my body and away from that dreadful situation.

This is not a pity post. I feel selfish for having such a response. I just ask that everyone in a position of privilege like myself remembers the lives of these men, women and children who had everything taken from them, and just remember how lucky we are to live how we do now. Equally if you are suffering from an eating disorder, please remember that there are always people around you who are willing to help. My ask is always open x
