Because I went back through the manga and it's true and also instant

This is the last time I saw him use the one finger version during the balloon arc

And then on treasure Island Gen gets to show off a bit. He specifically says he's copying Senkuu but he does it just a little differently, with two fingers.

And Senkuu is impressed.

Back in the village he often employed Gen's help as his fellow modern man even though Gen had no significant scientific know how. But what Gen did always have was the ability to follow the logic and at least. Senkuu has always acknowledged and appreciated Gen's brand of genius, as different as it is from his own.

The very next time Senkuu uses this pose it's two fingers.

And in that same scene Gen does it again! The two of them thinking together, solving this puzzle together. Senkuu would say it's exhilarating. Seeing Gen at his most brilliant, solving things he could not solve alone, or at least not this quickly, there's no way this doesn't leave a strong impression.

And I can't quite put into words why but I feel like something about their relationship shifts during the treasure island arc and of course on the voyage after. By the time they're in America the trust they have in each other is even stronger than before. It's not really different from what it was, they've always seemed to be able to read each other's mind when it was important, but there's a kind of elevated pride and trust in the face of new levels of danger and fear.
