Do me a favour and reblog this with a show you like that was cancelled after only one season. I don't mean shows that were always meant to be miniseries or shows that work perfectly well as a standalone story, or shows that might still get renewed. I mean shows that are and will forever remain unfinished. The more obscure the better.

I was not somebody who particularly cared about "adaptational accuracy" one way or another, but the responses to Wuthering Heights and The Odyssey have negatively polarized me against it.

I think it's fair to dislike an adaptation for not focusing on the things you found important to the original.

I think it's fair to criticize an adaptation that is trying to do the same thing as the original for doing it worse.

But the gleeful "this wasn't in the original/is missing in the adaptation, therefore the adaptation is bad" stuff is misguided in normal circumstances, and when you apply it to a movie that is obviously not trying to be a 1-to-1 adaptation, or a movie adapting a 2,000-year-old epic poem from another language that was itself a written version of an oral tradition... it's such an absurdly miserable way to interact with art.

it really is kind of interesting how attached people are to the idea of the improvised line and the genuine reaction in film. nearly every single famous moment or line has some sort of claim floating around that it wasn't in the script and was either made up on the spot by an actor or was sprung as a surprise on the actors to get their 'real' reaction. you know, sometimes people do come up with good lines in advance and write them down, and sometimes people can pretend to be have a convincing emotional response on screen
