WHY WILL EMERGENCY ROOMS ALWAYS REMAIN IN BUSINESS?
yes, because diseases only affect stupid people
Obviously you have never worked in the ER
Because if you did, you would understand that the reasons that bring people in is often not disease but stupidity. I have seen people come in for many idiotic things, including but not limited to:
Broken arms after jumping off of a parking garage for parkour
Scraped their hand on ice and ended up with a mild abrasion (not even close to an emergency)
Tried to jump over a fire and burned their leg
Lots and LOTS of dumb teenagers who drank too much alcohol
Of course disease affects everyone, but the point of his post went flying over your head. Work in an ER and come back to me after that.
Yuuuup. A VAST majority of what comes in is either 100% preventable or, if it's disease related, should be handled by primary care. The few things that we see that are actually appropriate for an EMERGENCY department are strokes, traumas, STEMIs, allergic reactions and things like that. These constitute less than 8% of our encounters. And we see over 200,000 patients a year. The ED has become primary care for those who don't have or simply don't like their PCP and a haven for those who make poor life choices.
