“oh my god, did you see that video of beyonce bringing out destiny’s child for coachella? i’m so fucking pissed i didn’t get tickets this year. like what the fuck? i swear to god, all colleges should be closed for festival season. experiencing that shit is way more important than learning about microeconomics.”

“Please don’t remind me,” Emery said dolefully, and pressed a thumb delicately to the underside of his wrist. “My pulse is still slow. Missing that performance nearly killed me, I’ve barely recovered. The most historic reunification since Germany and I wasn’t there. Unbelievable.”

Camden’s fingers wrapped around the plastic bag where the marshmallows once were, crumbling it up a bit before shoving it in one of Emery’s pocket. He then crossed his arms over his chest as he watched him pop the gum in his mouth. “Nah. My dad deprived me of love. Wanting to give all his love to my twin, so I had to find love elsewhere… that’s where the marshmallows come in. I ate the pain away,” Camden joked, head tilting to the side. “Of course you’re not coming to my wedding. When does an ex husband come to the next wedding? Why would you want to see the love of your life marry a marshmallow? Especially after that tragic affair that happened. Yikes.” 

“Yikes,” Emery said in a low voice, taken aback by the forthright honesty--the shameless openness--inherent in Camden’s words in spite of the fact he sounded like he was making a joke of it. Having grown up in a house where it was not only acceptable but encouraged to discuss his feelings and emotions, to take them seriously and expect the same in return, he found it both very sad and very interesting that Camden should make such light of something that sounded really quite painful. “I’m sorry, did you just, within a single breath, plot out not only our marriage but our divorce? And refer to yourself as the love of my life?” He lifted an eyebrow behind his sunglasses and popped his gum, barely hiding his smirk, “That’s bold.”

“I said I do like fries with my milkshake, oh my god,” Emery said, crossing one leg over the other beneath the table with a huff. “Relax. I just don’t want fries right now. I can’t believe that’s a crime these days.”

“I wouldn’t be able to tell you,” Emery said from where he was stretched out languorously on the couch, idly picking at the chipped blue paint on his nails. “I don’t have an ear for that kind of thing. I thought it sounded great. As usual.” He didn’t turn to face Achi, but there was an obvious grin on his face. “One of my favorites of yours, actually. When did you write it?”

at the whole scene, gianna’s lips curled upward in mild amusement. the boy who had grabbed her, with his little shenanigan, reminded her of her baby cousins at family reunions. a single eyebrow rose at the challenge before she took a hold of the sling. “i know i can do better.” she countered before taking a marshmallow and setting up the shot at some random person. before letting it go, gianna quickly swiveled the shot and pointed it at emery before letting the marshmallow fly, hitting him in the arm. “hit my target!” she exclaimed before laughing out loud.  

“Whoa. I like the confidence.” Emery pulled his legs up onto the table, meaning to watch her take aim. He realized a second too late what she was doing and, though he tried to jump out of the way, the marshmallow still hit him in the arm. “What a fucking plot twist,” he said, grinning broadly as he watched her laugh. “That was literally the fiercest betrayal since Scar killed Mufasa.” He snatched the slingshot back and threw it onto the table, as if to put distance between her and the weapon. “Do you have a name or should I just refer to you as the savage who turned my own slingshot on me?”

With seeing the marshmallows flying out of the bag and soon landing in the grass. Camden’s mouth fell open with a gasp soon following after. His eyes stayed on the male in front of him. Though, he looked like a child who just watched his ball get flattened by a car in front of him. “Wow. That should be against some law. What did those marshmallows ever do to you? I was saving them – trying to let them live good marshmallow-ey lives where they wouldn’t have to live in the grass, and this is how waste them.” Shaking his head, Camden clicked his tongue against his teeth a few times. “I can’t believe you would do such a thing.”

“You need to relax on the marshmallow thing,”  Emery droned, pulling his sunglasses down over his eyes as if to physically signify the closure of the subject. He pulled a pack of gum from his pocket and folded a stick of peppermint into his mouth. “The deprivations of childhood,” he recited, stuffing the rest back into his jeans, “become the obsessions of the adult. According to Freud, anyway. So, what, did your parents, like, deprive you of marshmallows or something? Is this gonna turn into one of those stories you hear on the radio, like, ‘This just in, man falls in love with marshmallow and tries to marry it?’ I’m not coming to your wedding, Camden.”

letting a sigh escape of her lips, isabella allowed emery to grab her, feeling nothing but curiosity of what he was going to do, she sat next to him on the bench and without saying a word, she watched as he shot a marshmallow away that ended up hitting someone. so far, she didn’t have a reaction, without understanding what’s the point of what he was trying to do, but by hearing emery’s next last words, isabella frowned her eyebrows and stared at him, “that’s what you wanted to show me? you really need to find a hobby for yourself, dear.”

“Yes, that’s what I wanted to show you,” Emery scoffed, underwhelmed by her enthusiasm. “My hobby is spreading anarchy throughout the world, Iz. Upsetting the establishment. Revealing the chaos that lies just below our flimsy illusion of order and stability.” As if to prove his point, he tossed another marshmallow--this time freehand--at a boy passing the table, startling him into nearly dropping his phone. He scowled at Emery and continued on his way. “See? It’s my job to remind people how easy it is to shake them up. At least he’ll be more on his toes for about twenty minutes.”

“I know you too well, Han,” he laughed. Jumping up from the couch, he grabbed his embroidered denim jacket, made sure his wallet was in his jeans, and nodded toward the door. “C’mon, let’s get a move on. Unless you feel like flirting with the host we need to beat the brunch crowd or we’ll be waiting half an hour for a table.”

An amused sort of smirk began stitching itself across Emery’s face--he was irritated by the instant prejudice with which he’d been labeled, but more than that it struck him as outrageously interesting that someone should take such an immediate, fierce dislike to him. The amount of bullying he’d dealt with in high school after coming out had been, of course, traumatic and miserable, but had also toughened his skin and prepared him for just this sort of viciousness. He lifted an eyebrow as he puffed at his cigarette, startled into a laugh by her mention of Logan Paul. “You say that as if I’m trying to convince you to spend time with me. There is literally nobody on this campus whose company I would prefer less than yours, psycho. Maybe you could try to, I don’t know...relax? I mean, are you usually this unpleasant? I’ve literally never inspired this sort of blind hatred in anybody before.”

“Whatever you say, baby,” Emery said, not bothering to hide the amusement in his voice or the knowing look in his eyes. Sometimes he wasn’t entirely sure what made him bait the two of them so shamelessly--other times a voice in his head that sounded suspiciously like his dad reminded him that it was his own fatal attraction to and borderline obsession with anything that even faintly resembled passion between two people. “Well that’s good to hear,” he tossed his cigarette as they came to the little waterfront restaurant near campus he loved so much, breaking away from the conversation only long enough to inform the hostess they wanted a table outside, before turning back to her. “If you switched to men I’d have to start fighting you for scraps, and god knows I’d tear even your eyes out over a nice cock.” He flashed her a teasing grin as they were led back outside and to a table situated neatly under an umbrella. “Don’t,” he said flatly as he picked up a menu, “even get me started. I had a really healthy little run-in with Austin earlier--he went all Norman Bates on me because I made a joke about steroids. Like, I know you’re not taking steroids, psycho. Nobody can handle a joke anymore.”

“Frats are by definition moronic,” Emery said casually, utterly unbothered by the hypocrisy of the statement. He despised the Greek system as much as he enjoyed participating in it. “But the Thetas in particular really do a good job of exemplifying every negative stereotype, don’t they? And then there’s the Eta Omegas.” He rolled his eyes, as if the very thought was enough to inspire within him a sense of morbid displeasure. But Emilia’s smile and her comment brought his smile back--he grabbed her hand and pulled her down from the bench as well. “Come on, I have this spot on campus I like to go to smoke behind the McMurtry building.” He left the slingshot and marshmallows behind as he led her through the quad and on a short walk to the spot he’d dubbed the Bakery, which was nothing more exciting than a little knoll behind the art building. After lighting up the joint, taking a hit, and passing it over, he lay back and pulled down his sunglasses, enjoying the early-April quality of the sun and its promise of summer coming. “Wow, I’m so glad I decided not to go to class. Can you believe I would have been dying slowly in Art History?”

As Emery shot the marshmallow in his general direction, Camden tried to follow the way that it was going. His mouth was still open, trying to guide it in a way where he was under it, but was still off. So, now there were two wasted marshmallows and Camden huffed. “That’s two!” Camden yelled. “You fucking suck at this game, Em! Dishonor on you, dishonor on your cow… You should be thrown in a pit!” Camden was still screaming and was sure that he had caught the attention of a few people that were surrounding them. He jogged his way back over to the bench and snatched the bag away. “You do not deserve these.”

Emery’s groan of disappointment turned into helpless laughter when Camden started berating him, and he let out a squawk of indignation when the marshmallows were grabbed right out from under him. “I can’t believe this blatant thievery,” he said, affecting a deeply affronted tone of voice. He jumped down from the picnic table and snatched the bag back from Camden, only to grab it from the bottom and swing it in a wide arc so the remaining contents flew out from the top and scattered all over the grass. “Whoops,” he pressed the bag into Camden’s chest, a Cheshire grin lighting up his face. “My childishly anarchistic tendencies got the better of me for a second.”

when austin heard the word steroids, it was like a bull seeing red. the boys face scrunched up and he moved to press against emery. ‘ hey, don’t try that shit with me, you know full well i don’t take shit like that and you know why. if i took steroids, my back would be full of spots and my dick would be tiny. and you know first hand that neither of those are true, so quit with the accusations, okay? ‘ he shouted, nearly spitting his words with anger. ‘ apologise? no, stop acting like a fucking kid and get a real hobby. ‘ 

He’d known what the word would do, and maybe that was why Emery had said it--because he had a terrible, masochistic tendency to push and test his limits, and nobody brought this out in him like Austin did. He flinched even though he’d anticipated a raised voice, looking deliberately away with a clenched jaw as Austin yelled, hands curling into fists at his sides. A deep flush was spreading from his cheeks down his neck, the blood rising to the surface and making him hot. He swallowed hard, angry at Austin for losing his temper and angry at himself for being so turned on by it. It was sick, he thought...completely twisted that this got him off. “Why don’t you calm the fuck down, psycho,” he said finally, using whatever strength he could muster to shove Austin away bodily. “You can’t fucking talk to me like that, I’m not your boyfriend anymore. And it wasn’t an accusation, Jesus Christ, do you have to take everything so literally?”
