born to a teenage mom and a dad who split before the ink was dry on his birth certificate, luca's childhood was one of grime and grit, not glitz and glam.
much of luca's life has been spent in the liminal spaces, in the in-between. nights spent in subways cars, hiding out in building stairwells, sitting in the entrance to an alleyway while his mom exchanged favors for favors to get her next hit.
there were times when things were more stable in his life. when his mom was sober, they'd usually have a shoebox apartment and a stocked fridge, but all of those things would disappear as soon as she lost her job or her car got stolen or that one lady at the corner store caught an attitude with her. and when she wasn't sober, it was like she wasn't there at all. well, aside from the yelling at the boyfriend of the week or the husband of the next few months.
luca's escape from the tumultuous world around him was typically in books or music or at the bottom of a whiskey bottle, whichever was closest.
at 16, luca ran away. it took a month before he was reported missing, and by then he was already multiple states away, trying to build a life on the measly savings he had built after years of working odd jobs. he did eventually contact his mother and emancipation papers were drawn up and luca became a drifter.
permanence is a concept that holds very little meaning in luca's life. everything can be undone, everything can be uprooted, and that is something that he has proven time and time again. he'll come to a town, stay there for maybe a few days, weeks, months, or even years, but he always leaves. it's the one constant in his life. when the going gets tough, luca gets going.

luca enjoys beer, but he very rarely touches liquor because once he starts, he can't stop until he's passed out. those addiction genes are a bitch.
he plays guitar, but he never lets anyone know it. if you happen to see a guitar at his place, he'd rather say it's for aesthetics than take it out and play it for them
his mom never talked about his dad growing up, so all he knows is that he got the man's last name and his affinity for leaving. he's never made an effort to learn more.
he dropped out of high school the second that he could, but he ended up getting his GED at 22
he thinks love is as real as dragons and unicorns in fantasy novels. he tries not to be an asshole or too much of a fuck boy, but his proclivity for leaving has likely left a few broken hearts and a bad reputation in his rearview mirror

as the sun sank further below the horizon and the sky darkened, luca made his way down to the bonfire whose flames stretched towards the heavens in an elemental dance to the soundtrack of partygoers, the band playing in the distance, and the waves lapping against the shore. he then noticed that the fire had a dancing partner, marlo. he rolled his eyes as he watched her move with a freedom and lightness that he had never known. his lips pulled slightly up at the corners, betraying his feigned apathy. after a moment, he moved closer to her, "careful with those spins, i'd hate to have to rescue you from the fire if you got too dizzy and fell in."

the cool condensation of the amber glass bottle collected in the palm of luca's hand as he brought it up to his lips and took a swig of the bitter, but refreshing lager. his eyes scanned the beach, observing the people like they were aliens. or maybe he was the alien who watched the people. either way, he felt a disconnect from the joviality of it all. his gaze fell to holly standing near the food trucks and he made his way over, "so what do you think the chances are that at least one of these trucks has tamales as good as the ones we got in texas?"

community gatherings had never really been his thing. what was the point of going and supporting a town and the people who lived there when the road was always just a whim away? but his curiosity and the book store being dead got the best of him as he wandered up to the edge of the party and leaned against the side of a food truck, quietly observing the people running free in the sun. a smile pulled at the corner of his lips as he spotted wren walking by and he fell into step beside her, "i can't believe people actually come to these things," he started as if they were already mid conversation, "doesn't anyone have anything better to do?"
