i miss the suckening bro
saw the hadestown proshot today, and all i have to say is AMBER. MF. GRAY. i don’t think y’all comprehend. she could have told the story with JUST her facial expressions. she was so scared for eurydice. so hopeful for orpheus. so angry with hades. and i gathered all of that JUST from her facial expressions. she makes every character she ever plays her own, and i absolutely love that.
something i’ve also come to understand after seeing the proshot is that persephone was not only scared for eurydice, but scared for herself. there were so many times she almost reached for eurydice or orpheus but stopped herself out of fear. so many times you could see her almost say something but stop herself before she could. and in the end, when she finally did stand up for her beliefs and for orpheus and eurydice, it didn’t fix things. it fell apart again. and she will do this again and again because they will sing it again and again.
persephone deserves so much better.
Here’s the new 24 hour comic I drew this year! This one is called THE KING’S FOREST. cw: blood, violence
How the fuck did you make that last panel say so many things without using any words at all that’s so fucking cool.

If you can't bear anyone else playing with the toys you make in ways you don't specifically approve of, don't be a toymaker. Once they're out in the world, in other people's hands and governed by their imaginations, they will do things you didn't intend. They will bury the toy in sand, or they will make the toys kiss, or they will draw all over the toy in permanent marker.
If someone is mailing you pictures of the assorted ways they've destroyed your toys, that's weird and you can and should ban them from doing so. If you're collaborating with other toymakers professionally, it would be perfectly reasonable to ask them to interact with your toys publicly in proscribed ways- that is both a professional business arrangement and a genuine one-on-one relationship.
But the toys themselves aren't yours anymore.
Everyone who sees a performance or movie or stream has a sliver of the idea of that character in their head, and you don't get to tell them what to do with it once it's there. That isn't how telling stories works; it's never been a right anyone could claim.
The curtains were blue because everything in the room was carefully colour coordinated, reinforcing the character’s stylish and controlled characterisation. The curtains were blue because everything in the room was a different colour, reinforcing the character’s eclectic and globe-trotting personality. The curtains were blue because the character is elsewhere established to hate the colour blue, subtextually implying that their deceased spouse was responsible for that decoration choice.
The curtains were blue because throughout their filmography the director consistently uses cool tones to mark moments of distance between characters. The curtains were blue to tie the events in that room into the broader oceanic motif of this particular novel. The curtains were blue because the assonance evoked a contrast with the following stanza of the poem.
Even the curtains looked expensive: floor to ceiling velvet drapes, in a flawless royal blue. She tucked the saucer up on the windowsill and tied back faded blue curtains with a loop of string. The narrow blinds were the same navy blue as the pinstripe suit of the man who served eviction notice that sent them to this office.
The curtains were blue because the author’s childhood home had blue curtains, which they discussed in their letters related to their feelings of comfort in that place. The curtains were blue because the author’s childhood home had blue curtains, which they discussed in their letters related to their feelings of grief in that place.
The curtains were blue as an allusion to the contemporary joke about literary criticism, an extension of the author’s autocritical approach that will be further discussed in section seven.
The curtains were red, as a pun on;
The curtains were read.
I am so so so curious about this so please reblog and tell me: when you say "this book/fic is so well-written" what do you mean by that?
IMO: It is both COMPELLING and CONTAINS FEW ERRORS.
Compelling: There is something about the writing that is interesting/exciting/evocative, probably more than average. Good world-building, good prose, good character development, good pacing, good plot, etc. Not that it has all of the above, necessarily, but it has enough of them, or a high enough quality in some of them, that it’s noticeable.
Contains Few Errors: Orthographically, there is usually less than one punctuation or spelling mistake every ~100 pages (professionally edited) or chapter (fic or self-published). There are no egregious plot holes or character inconsistencies. The use of non-standard prose (sentence fragments, run-on sentences, non-standard spelling) seems like a deliberate choice, not a mistake.
Basically, for me, to call something well-written it has to be both “good” and “not bad”. If it’s compelling but contains many errors (one of my favorite fics in the world has extreme overuse of italics and other grammar/spelling mistakes, for instance), then I wouldn’t call it “well-written”, I’d describe the parts of it that I do find compelling. If it’s perfectly edited but otherwise bland, I also wouldn’t call it well-written. If I mentioned it at all (unlikely), the it would be “certainly a book/fic” or something of the sort — it fulfills the prototypical definition of “book/fic” but has nothing else I think recommends it.
Forget about boundaries for a minute. Let's talk about triggers.
Triggers are a reaction that can form due to exposure to traumatic situations. Some aspect of the environment around the trauma (an item, a song, a food- ANYTHING) becomes associated with the trauma. Future exposure to that trigger brings up the memory of the trauma, causing things like flashbacks or dissociation.
Let's imagine someone who spent a lot of time very sick in the hospital, and as a result they're triggered by the smell of a specific brand of cleaner. Any time they smell it, it feels like they're right back alone and in pain and dying in that hospital bed.
What do you expect they might do to handle that? They might let friends and family whose houses they visit know, so those people avoid that scent. Maybe they've had to leave stores or restaurants a few times, so they call ahead to check if that cleaner is used. Maybe they go to therapy and start working on controlled exposure to it, or how to lessen their reaction.
Why don't they just ask that no one uses that cleaner anymore? It's legitimately triggering to them, it can make them have panic attacks - why would anyone want to use something like that, knowing how much it could upset them? It's not like there aren't plenty of other cleaning supplies and scents out there! How obsessed are you with this cleaner that you can't agree to not use it? Surely you understand how disrespectful it is to prioritize a smell over someone's comfort, they're a person too.
...
Someone who creates media (whether acting, writing, streaming, or otherwise) does not retain control over the stories other people tell when inspired by what they made. It's not about the fucking shipping, it's that the request is fundamentally unreasonable and controlling. Pretty much everyone is happy to use tags and filters and archive locking to ensure CCs don't have to see things they don't like; but if a CC wants to ensure art or writing exists to their precise specifications, that's called a commission.
A creator announcing you can't ship their characters is just a different flavor of Anne Rice issuing takedown letters to gay fanfic of IWTV, and deserves to be equally clowned on.
It's a zombie apocalypse and you are stuck in this place!
How are you doing?
great!
okay, I can make this work
Not great, probably can't make this work
A zombie
Dead (non-zombie related)
Results/it depends
(zombies work by standard zombie rules, boarded doors and biting)
i feel like i’ve passed a curse on to my mutuals. someone else try it
i gotta make a curse wheel now
Oh, cool. Lemme just lock myself into one of those giant freezers preemptively, because I don't think I'll be lasting very long in the Dead People Storage Place.
