Mariβs job was a very hard one. There was simply no denying that. Running a store day-to-day was hard enough, with having to deal with customers and the books themselves, and then on top of that was all these big decisions that no one was there to watch you make. Well, no, Ella was here to watch Mari make it, but no one could tell you which table to put where. It was a hard burden, and though it was small, it seemed to mean an awful lot to Mari. And Ella could understand that.Β βI donβt think so,β Ella repeated.Β βHere, letβs justβ¦β She walked out to where she thought the table would be and stretched out her arms. Ella didnβt make a very good table.Β βItβd be like this, right?β
Β Β Β ( βββ :: Β pushing back a strand of hair that had slipped free from itβs spot tucked at the back of her head, mari watched as ella moved to stand in the space. a giggle slipped out, one that mari had to press her hand against her mouth to quiet. arms outstretched, ella did look a little silly, but mari appreciated it nonetheless. these kinds of nights, ones where mari found herself over thinking every layout the store could have, were sometimes very stressful. it was nice to have a companion to make it fun.Β βΒ haces una mesa maravillosa.Β β mari complimented, moving to stand near where ella was. reaching out, she pressed her hands against either side of ellaβs head.Β β you make a wonderful table, mi amor. would you like to just stand here and hold books for me all day ? i canβt pay very much, but i do think itβs what your destined for.Β β chuckling, she let go of ella and glanced around the store once more.Β β i think youβre right thoughΒ ββ itβs worth giving it a shot.Β βΒ

shots had been the first order of business, she welcomed the sharp taste and the warmth that followed which seemed to spread through her chest. she whistled loudly, clapping her free hand against the counter in support of the other womanΒ βand that is how itβs doneβ and just like that she was throwing her last shot back, she welcomed the slight burn in her throat, the heat just spreading further into her chest. A trail of empty shot glasses spread out against the bar in a line, she drops the last glass back down and just like that the bartender was coming back over with the bottle of tequila, a coy smile played on her lipsΒ βwith these two you might be better leaving the bottleβ she leaned across the bar slightly, she was mostly trying to tease the other two women, but if the bartender felt the need to leave the bottle she wouldnβt have been against it. at the sound of indieβs voice bowie turned to look out at the crowd, eyes lingering over the guys, she wouldnβt have normally given a single one of them a chance but this was different.Β βyour best bet it to pick the guy who looks like his mom dressed him, unfortunately for them money does not buy good tasteβ she looked around, following indieβs gaze until she finally landed on the guy she had been talking about βand ding ding ding we have a winnerβ her eyebrows were furrowed, head cocking to the side slightly as she took in what he was wearing. just from looking at him he seemed like the type of guy who just loved the sound of his own voice, they talked and talked but nothing ever really came out.Β βheβs worth a shot but thereβs no promises i donβt trip him up or tie his shoe- β it was then she noticed he was wearing loafers and that tying his shoelaces together was no longer an optionΒ βthis has got to be a joke, heβs wearing fucking loafers in the clubβ she says mostly to herself, turning back to the bar knowing she was most definitely going to need some more shotsΒ βweβre going to need the bottleβ she says to the bartender this time completely serious.

Β Β ( βββ ::Β β okay, okay ! slow down ! itβs not water ! no todas somos alcohΓ³licas. . .ββΒ β mari muttered the last part to herself under her breath as she tossed back the latest shot of tequilla that had been placed down in front of her.Β admittedly, it was not her best drink thanks to previous bad decisions, and it always took more effort to force it down. but mari was never one to back down from what she saw as a challenge ββ and with both bowie and indie finished already, mari had seen it as a challenge. bringing the back of her hand up to press lightly against her lips, she grimaced, gently placing the small shot glass back down on the counter in front of her. pushing past the burning in her throat ( and the warmth that was spreading across her chest because the speed of which they were throwing those shots back ) she turned her attention to the conversation at hand.
mari lived life often by the motto work hard, play hard. even though the bookstore and her parents took up most of her time, she never turned down the opportunity to let loose. turning her gaze out towards the rest of the club, mari brought her hand up to rest against the side of her neck. as her eyes landed on the same target that the other two had decided on, it jumped up to instead press against her lips, biting back the urge to laugh. β those jeans are way too small on him, β mari added her own piece to their criticism of his outfit, finally letting her hand move away from her mouth, β theyβre a bit too high above the ankles, you can tell itβs not a fashion choice. . . β she cocked her head to the side, β do you really think his mother dressed him. . . ? or do you think he just has really mean friends ? β / @sircnscngs

Ella tilted her head, considering Mariβs idea. She liked to draw things out, personally, seeing how pieces fit together on paper before trying it in real life. But even without a pencil and paper, she could see what the other woman meant. There seemed to be a hole in the room.Β βWell, it might make it harder to walk around,β Ella began slowly.Β βBut I think you need something there. What ifββ She stood up, walking into the spot and putting her arms out.Β βI think youβre right. Can we try it here and if it doesnβt work, weβll move things around?β There was something so relaxing about arranging furniture. And something relaxing about being with Mari. She was so nice, so easy to be around. Ella could spend hours here and not notice the time pass in friendly companionship.
Β Β Β Β ( βββ ::Β mari followed the other woman with her eyes, folding her arms behind her back as she did. she worried sometimes that she could get too inside her head ; that her ideas would grow too big for herself. she had done that beforeΒ ββ got overexcited about something she thought would work, started it, and then realized halfway through it just wasnβt. naturally, she picked up that asking other peopleβs opinions was helpful ( at the very least, provided it wasnβt her mama or padre, whom both had very outdated ideas that proved utterly useless. )Β β i donβt think a table that small would cause that much of a blockage, though, hm ?Β β she thought out loud, glancing around the room once before stepping back.Β β ββ or, hm, actually, would it disrupt the flow of the store ? i donβt want people to feel as though theyβre being herded.Β βΒ

Bowie cradled the warm cup in her hands, fingers still chilled from being outside in the cold. She always had great time for Mari, she had put up with her coming into the store and hanging out with her since she had discovered the place back when she was a teenager just new to the city. the corners of her lips turned upwards, a small smile on her lips as Norman laps up all of the attention.Β βno mari thatβs not even itβ she shook her headΒ βshe then put it in her pocket, there is a line and it was a mere speck in her rearview mirrorβ she taps a finger against the counterΒ βand I may have been sleeping with her ex, and I may have bumped into her on the way out of his apartment building, and she might have been there to pick up the rightful owner of those dog biscuits because they had joint custody of their dogβ the sentence came out quite hushed, speaking into the cup before lifting it to take another sipΒ βhe was obviously blocked on the way homeβ
βplease tell me you didnβt eat the gum, because the key words there are βan old man who used to come into the storeβ and maybe one day he just had his last piece of aged cool mint orbit gumβ she began to tease Mari, her tone might have not faltered but her face broke out into a smileΒ βMari you could neverβ she presses a hand to her chest, she could never really tire from hearing her friends talking about the things that they loved, or something that they were passionate about, even when she might not have known what they were talking aboutΒ βwork has been a bitch but you can bet your ass that once I have finished I will be here with more coffee, maybe even some tequila instead and we can have a real party.β
Β Β Β Β mari continued to listen to bowieβs story with an expression of concerned confusion, the lip of the travel cup hovering close to her mouth.Β β ...she put it in her pocket?Β β mari echoed, placing emphasis on the word pocket.Β β like, a whole dog biscuit... in her pocket? aye aye aye. β shaking her head, she was content with just that tid-bit of information, but then bowie was launching into a whole story and mari found herself leaning into it. raising her coffee but never breaking eye contact, she took a sip.Β β they had joint custody of their dogΒ Β ββ like, a real dog, one that barks? thatβs not just what they called their child? likeΒ ββ you know how some people put their babies on leashes?Β β it was a bit of tangent, but mari brought herself back to the conversation, lowering the mug to sit on the counter once more.Β β i donβt blame you. thatβs way too much trauma to unpack.Β β she shook her head.
she laughed, bringing her hand up to cover her mouth as she did so.Β β no, no. i donβt like gum. it bothers my teeth.Β β she admitted,Β β but that would be quite the way to go. could you imagine his obituary? we will remember fredrick jones, whoβs strange habit finally kicked him.Β β grinning, she reached out to lightly nudged the other woman with her elbow. it was hard for her not to smile when bowie insisted that she wasnβt a bother.Β β you work too much,Β mi amor.Β β she insisted, reaching out to once again lightly nudge bowie.Β β i would love to have a real party with you, if you think you can keep up.Β βΒ
I can spend three days locked in my house, reading books and drawing and doing music and then suddenly I have a desire to put on a fancy dress and just run to every party that I know for the entire night- and then go back and lock myself up.

it was pretty standard greeting whenever Norman was accompanying her anywhere, well it depended on the person really, she had been bringing him by the bookstore since he was a puppy and he was always just as happy to see the woman as she was to see him whenever they popped by. she unhooked the leash since it wasnβt necessary considering Norman was pretty well behaved, never straying too far from Bowie.Β She had stopped by a little coffee truck on her walk and decided to pick something up for mari, setting the two cups of coffee on the counter βoh yeah, lovely to see you too mariβ her tone was sarcastic, nothing unusual for Bowie.Β βno I think I will leave the treats for norm, although, if youβre offering I did see some girl before on the street just going to town on some dog biscuits beforeβ she thought to herself for a momentΒ βpity I donβt remember because Iβm sure sheβd be thrilled with an offer like thatβ she shook her head at the woman as she spoke about the book that she had previously recommended to BowieΒ βI havenβt gotten a chance to yetβ she says before lifting the cup, taking a sipΒ βbut I could never say no to some more recommendationsβ
Β Β mari let out a soft laugh at the other womanβs sarcasm, the words bouncing off of her without leaving even so much of a dent. her fingers never left normanβs head as she gently scratched behind his ears, a bright grin embracing her delicate features.Β β you canβt blame me,Β β she insisted in response, ducking back down to the puppyβs level.Β β you know iβm a sucker for a handsome man.Β β cooing the words towards the dog, she planted a kiss on his nose before standing back up, approaching the counter where bowie now resided.
β gracias,Β hermosa,Β β she said as she plucked the coffee that bowie had given her from the tableΒ ββ though her face twisted in confusion at her story.Β β a womanΒ ββ just on the street? eating dog biscuits?Β β she echoed, blinking a few times before shaking her head.Β β odd, but i suppose to each his own. we all have our guilty pleasures. there was an old man who used to come into the store, and heβd always gift me gum past itβs expiry date. he said it tasted better. very strange.Β β reeling herself back in from her story, her face broke out into a grin as bowie indulged her.Β β i canβt overwhelm you, mi amor, or else youβll never get through them.Β β she insisted.Β β and i need you to get through them, because everyone else here has gotten tired of listening to me talk.Β βΒ

Β Β Β β norman!Β β greeting the big dog with an excited squeal, it only took a few moments for mari to be launching herself out from behind the counter to greet her latest ( and familiar ) patrons. she had fumbled with the bag of dog treats she kept stashed below the counter as she did, but in only a few steps she had managed to land herself in front of them. it was one of those days where mari was excited to greet just about everyone who came in the door; bowie, and the beautiful dog that frequently seemed to accompany her, were no exception.Β β iβm happy to see you too, sir! here ββ oh, and iβm happy to see you too, of course.Β β she offered a wide grin to bowie as she stood up from where sheβd leaned down to say hi to the puppy.Β β thoughΒ ββ sorry, unless youβre really into peanut butter dog treats, i donβt have anything i can give to you. except recommendations; though thatβs me assuming that youβve already finished the last one i gave you.Β βΒ
closed starter for @ellataeglass location: mariβs bookstore because once again, she never leaves that place i guess.
Β Β Β " do you think i should put it here?Β β standing in the middle of the bookstore, mari had her hands extended out in front of her, her fingers curled together to create a picture frame as she tried to imagine where her latest display table would go ( once she had built it, of course. ) a half-finished bottle of wine sat open on the counter, with a glass to accompany itΒ ββ though mari had forgotten all about that once the two of them had shifted conversation topics into her many, many ideas for the bookstore.Β β i just think that space is kind of empty. mi madre said that she thinks it might make things too cluttered, but we used to have this big armchair there that took up way more spaceΒ ββ and, i donβt know, i just think the more books i can have out on tables, the better.Β β with wide eyes, she turned to look at ella.Β β what do you think, mi amada?Β βΒ
