Update on Blackbird, Fly
I just wanted to give my readers a bit of a heads up as I near the end of the book.
The next chapter is finished; I am giving it a proofread, and then I'll post. It was originally way too long (have I mentioned I tend to overwrite?), so I chopped it in two, and now chapter 37 and 38 are basically done. I'll be releasing both within about a week of each other.
Then I'll draft the epilogue, which I expect to be fairly short. No really.
Then, as has been my habit, I shall write an appendix, and The Fallen trilogy will at last be complete.
I'm considering rereading The Fallen series soon. It's been a while- a really long while. I know I'll need to catch up to follow along with the plot and storyline. I finally got an e-reader to organize all of my favorite fics- so clean and nice! My sensitivities have changed in that i can only do one intense/dark piece of media at a time and i have to balance it with something lighter. The world is enough rn. Lol. Okay, I'm rambling now. Just came here to say how excited I am for the final book! And I really appreciate you sticking with it- for over a decade! đâ€ïž
Pacing yourself is a good idea. I know these stories go to some quite dark places ... but I also think they are rather triumphant at many points throughout. And as I have said many times for many years, I believe in the happy ending. So do take your time, and look especially for moments of light, humour, and victory amidst the darkness.
Not a bad way to look at the world we live in, either. â€ïž
I still think about The Fallen Series and your incredible writing after all these years and so excited to dive back in once completed. Do you have a playlist for Blackbird Fly?
I don't, I'm afraid. You may have seen the playlists for Ten Days and The Slash Man on my homepage. These were actually generated (crowdsourced?) from readers. Someone proposed a song in connection with a chapter, and I started collecting suggestions and then came up with the playlist. Honestly, it has been so long since then that I'd nearly forgotten all about it!
So how about it? Shall be play again?
If anyone would like to suggest a song that reminds them of a scene or chapter from Blackbird, Fly, please message me with the name of the song, the artist, and the chapter. I'll start collecting, and by the time the final word is typed and posted, we can have a jointly created playlist.
Blackbird, Fly
Chapter 36: The Storm at the End of the World
Read it on AO3.
Read it on FFN.
Nearly there . . .
I'm nearing completion of the next chapter of Blackbird, Fly. It's at nearly 10,000 words, but then, it is the climax of the book. I'll have one more chapter of denouement, an epilogue pointing to the future for our heroes, and an appendix.
The reason I'm giving you the heads up is that this particular chapter does rely on some canonical and in-story memory. Readers familiar with the first two series of the BBC Sherlock have already done their homework. But there are some scenes from Ten Days, The Slash Man, and Blackbird, Fly that are being referenced that readers may have forgotten (because this book so so long).
That said, it might do you well to refresh your memories of the following chapters:
Ten Days, end of chapter 29 and beginning of 30.
The Slash Man, chapter 32 (particularly the end).
Blackbird, Fly, chapter 25 (also the end).
No guilt if you don't want to go back to these. Just a recommendation for orienting yourselves to the structure of this latest chapter.
Posting soon.
Made a few updates to my covers for @engazed amazing series The Fallen
Stunning artwork by @imakewordsandpics, to whom I owe a thousand thank yous.
did you really thinkâÂ
did you really believe that there was anything i wouldnât do for you?
Just reread all of the fallen, desperate for the rest! Do you happen to know when we might be getting the rest? I am excited to see youâre considering printing this story, I would be very interested in buying it.
I'm really hoping for this month. This chapter is rather important, climax-wise, and has required a lot of planning and research, including revisiting the transcripts from the first two series. So each bit has come slowly, but I've written more than half of it and am speeding onward toward the finish line. This is likely the penultimate chapter (depending on whether I do an official epilogue, etc.), not to mention the appendix (which I've included in the first two books, so I need to stay consistent).
And I very much want to make each of these books into a print copy because I certainly don't trust that the internet will preserve these stories for years to come.
Hey! There's a fic I lost that is about Sherlock buying jg Ward John, who is traumatized. I found it in on if your long fic threads yeaaaaars ago. I can't remember the name. I remember the author had another series, The Raven (or some such) but that's all. Just a few works. Ring any bells?
SPOILERS FOR THE FIC BELOW:
John was abused by each of his previous owners, and Magnusson bought him at the end, not before Sherlock took him home tho! The fic is really long and talks in details about John's history and life and Sherlock slowly started teaching him to read and write. And that it's okay to sleep on a bed and that he shouldn't steal cause he has food and stuff.
Hi Lovely!!
OHHH GOSHHHHHHHH I feel like MAYBE this is one I've read, or it was an omegaverse fic? If so it might be on my Omegaverse list, since a lot of my Omegaverse recs on that had OmegaJohn.
If not, AHH I'm sorry I'm not much help otherwise... Hopefully one of my Lovelies and Lurkers know which fic this is??
I am pretty sure that's The Grating Roar by @engazed . Fantastic fic, but really dark and tough to read at times.
Yes, that sounds like mine. The sequel should begin to post next year. Thanks for remembering it!
So this is weird.
My husband surprised me with tickets to The Fifth Step. For tonight. My Thursday suddenly got a whole lot better.
Me:
It took me years, but I finally made my way south to London to do the Sherlock Escape Room in Shepherd's Bush, and can I just say, every minute was a joy!
The strangest, most surreal part for me, though, was standing inside the recreated 221B. I have spent countless hours in the 221B of my imagination as I write my fics that the flat has become oh so very real to me. So standing in that space, it felt like revisiting a place I'd already been, a place I knew all too well, a place I've spent almost as much time in as my own home. They've done a marvellous job with the details, from the Union Jack pillow on John's chair to Billy the Skull on the mantel to the clutter on the tables and dressing on the papered walls. I wish I could have stayed a little longer and just revelled in being there. But there was a game to play. Happy to say, we successfully escaped. ;)
If you've not done so already and you're in London for a spell--and if you like to solve puzzles and crack codes and pretend that Sherlock and John are still out there doing the same--do take the time. For me, it was a dream.
Hi Sherlock, are you comfortable with people fantasizing the intimate moments between you and John with generative ai?
Absolutely not.
While AI serves its purpose in science and data processing, it should never replace imagination or human creativity. What's nextâpeople letting AI write stories about their beloved fictional characters or compose music? That's not innovation, it's intellectual laziness. A terrifying waste of the most powerful tool we possess: the human mind.
SH
Love it that Sherlock's not opposed at all to fantasizing about him and John in intimate moment--just to outsourcing fantasy (creativity, imagination, pleasure) to gen ai.
I've learned that I can't stop anyone from fantasising about John and me. I've tried various methodsâthreats, blackmail, bribes, even rewards. None were effective. So, I've resigned myself to it.
However, if you must insert us into every absurd scenario imaginable, at least use your own brain. Not some so-called artificial 'intelligence'âa term I use very generouslyâwhich cobbles together stolen fragments of other people's imaginative work. Plagiarism with processing power is still plagiarism.
According to John, some of these fabricated stories are alarmingly accurate. Yours included. I suppose that qualifies as a complimentâthough don't expect me to make a habit of giving them. Stillâ well done.
So @artofdeductionbysholmes you're saying @johnhwatsonblog has read fanfic, specifically @a-victorian-girl's fanfic. That amazing.
I was, in fact, referring to the stories penned by @totallysilvergirl. Though I'm aware John has broadened his literary horizon with works by other fanfiction writers (perhaps including @a-victorian-girl).
He has a habit of reading certain passages aloudâusually the ones where he outsmarts me in the plot. He finds it endlessly amusing. I do not.
@johnhwatsonblog
Oh, yes, absolutely!! Iâve bookmarked several of these brilliant writers. Some of them handle even the medical bits with uncanny accuracy, which frankly, always impresses me. The stories are so heart-felt, sometimes devastating, sometimes exhilarating. It's.. a bit humbling, actually.
@arwamachine, @jbaillier, @bakertumblings, @raina-at @calaisreno, @lisbeth-kk, @discordantwords, @silentauroriamthereal, @helloliriels, @7-percent - you lot have a real gift. Honestly, I feel a bit guilty for enjoying them that much..... They should all be part of New York's bestselling list, if you ask me.
Would it be too presumptuous of me to ask for a few more author recommendations?
@artofdeductionbysholmes
Me? Mentioned alongside those brilliant authors??? Iâm beyond honoured @johnhwatsonblog
You donât want to miss @holmesianlove @khorazir @arwamachine @the-reading-lemon @keirgreeneyes @chriscalledmesweetie @meetinginsamarra @blogstandbygo
Hands down, there are so many fantastic writers in this fandom. Weâre a lucky bunch!
Thanks for adding me to this awesome list @lisbeth-kk I feel so honoured!!!
@johnwatsonblog I'd like to add some more @cumbercurlygirl @engazed @helloliriels @the-pen-pot @chryse @earlgreytea68
Too kind. Thank you for the mention, @meetinginsamarra!
Dear Engazed,
Hello!
Recently, I reread your novel The Grating Roar. Just like the first time I read it, I felt an indescribable sense of emotion and awe. It is definitely one of the best Johnlock novels I have ever read.
I really like the way you picture pain and tragedy. No matter which of your works it is, John, who has endured countless hardships, always manages to unleash incredible strength in the midst of despair. His strength may seem small at first glance, but it's truly powerful. I appreciate this quality very much and it is one of his traits that attract me the most.
I absolutely love the way you unfolded the story, which is logically tight, meticulously prepared, and intricately interconnected. Not a single word was wasted, and no object or name was meaningless.
Actually, what touches me the most in The Grating Roar are some small details. In Johnâs eyes, Sherlock is always "his Mr. Holmes", and in Sherlockâs eyes, John is always "his John". I love the fondness and affection in Mrs. Wright's words when she recalled Watson. Despite being a proud genius, Sherlock was willing to teach John to write, read, and learn maths. After returning from Dover, when seeing John again, the first sentence Sherlock said was "You didn't sleep last night." For more than thirty years of his life, John endlessly chased Dover, which was his hometown and also a place he could never reach. In this novel, you explore oppression, resistance, fate, suffering, fairness, freedom, love, and the question of how one could become a complete person.
I am a reader from China. I'm not sure whether you know just how popular your work is among Chinese Johnlock fans! There are many, many readers who are waiting for your updates, praising your stories, and of course, crying, feeling heartache, and being moved by the characters you write. In The Grating Roar, you describe John's feelings as follows: "His eyes wanted to skim ahead faster and devour the story, but he couldnât read that fast. He painstakingly pushed through every sentence, delighting in every word." That is exactly how I feel when reading your workâŠ
I know that your novel Blackbird Fly is about to be completed. I wonder, will you continue writing afterward? Also, I am a bit curious: after Blackbird Fly is finished, will you write the second part of The Grating Roar, or will you consider a new story, just like the one you mentioned a long time ago about John and the ghost?
In any case, thank you for your wonderful work. I want to express my deepest respect and love for you.
My best wishes >-<
Thank you so much for reading these stories and for your warm words regarding The Grating Roar. I'm so pleased to have so many loyal and devoted readers in China!
To answer your question: Yes! I intend to continue writing after BF. Next on my list is the sequel/conclusion to TGR. I'm impressed that you remember me mentioning the ghost story, which is still rattling around in my head. I'd love to write that one, too, and I'd love to give myself the challenge of writing a shorter volume of, say, less than 100k words. :)
I sent a question through your ask box about 3 days ago, but I don't know if there was a bug and if you received it (sorry, I'm not very familiar with tumblr). I just want to express my love for TGR after rereading it. It was a great piece of work, and thank you so much for writing it.đ
Yes, I did receive it, and I thank you for your patience whilst I've been travelling these past few days. I intend to reply very shortly!
