Welcome to my continuing adventures in the land of Phantom 1st editions. ;D
Yes, this is another 1st edition of The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. This is the 1st American edition, published by Bobbs-Merrill in 1911, translated by the infamous Alexander Teixeira de Mattos, and illustrated by the brilliant André Castaigne.
This edition did not cost me an arm and a leg like my 1st French edition of Le Fantôme de l'Opéra, likely because it is missing the frontis illustration and the dust jacket. However, all of the double-page illustrations are intact and in good condition, which is rare for this edition – including my favorite Phantom illustration, “Talking of Death, I Must Sing.“
This edition also features the stamp of Braunworth & Co., meaning that it is the 1st printing of the 1st edition.
I also hope to clear up once and for all that André Castaigne’s illustrations were commissioned and copyrighted by the American publishing company Bobbs-Merrill, and did not appear in the 1st French edition of Le Fantôme.
Enjoy the pretty pictures (as I freak out and do a happy dance around my room)! :D
