This wasp is one of the most insane parasites in the animal kingdom. They basically perform brain surgery on roaches to make them docile for the process of being eaten alive. Once a jewel wasp has injected her venom into the cockroach nervous system, the unfortunate bug will be led along by its antenna, trotting compliantly like a dog on a leash. It is astonishing how physiologically complex this process is!

When I saw this i thought it might've been an edit or even AI or something, but I looked it up and nope they're just like that! You can see it better when they're close up, but their wings have a pattern that just looks like antlers.

They are very cute little dudes that mostly live in the eastern half of the US and some of Canada. Honestly a fly that looks like a moose feels like it just belongs in Canada, doesn't it?

I've been restraining myself from talking too much about my terrariums on here, trying to keep this blog more about wild observations. But then I'm like, okay but my blog is named Microcosmic Observations so how are terrariums not on theme?? Now that I have isopods my self restraint is crumbling. They are adorable and ridiculous. How could I not share the joy they bring me with others?

Animal of the day: Imperial tortoise beetle! (Stolas imperialis) This fascinating insect native to Brazil is widely valued for its use in jewelry. Not much is known about the species' specific habits, but it can be discerned that due to being part of the tortoise beetle family, it has similar habits to other, more well-known tortoise beetle species, such as becoming discolored upon death and having a strong maternal instinct (something rare among the beetles).
