This blog is a dream come trueâ„ïžâ„ïžâ„ïž
In the town where I grew up, there was a large statue in one of the parks, of a famous historical white colonizer. I'm not going to say who specifically, suffice it to say that it was someone who wasn't worth memorializing for their deeds. And as you can imagine, this statue was a frequent target of vandalism, with paint or toilet paper or eggs on multiple occasions. Now, the local council was generally pretty lax when it came to repairing potholes or other public damage in the town, but every time, 24 hours after this particular statue was hit, the same person would always appear in a Hi-Vis vest, hat, mask and sunglasses, carrying a bucket of water, and wash it clean. They would do it as quickly as possible, but always made sure the face and the name carved at the bottom were generously scrubbed. This only encouraged people to do it again, and so it became a vicious cycle.
Within a year, the statue had sustained so much damage that it was unrecognizable and the lettering unreadable, so eventually the council came and took it down. Also apparently, the person in the Hi-Vis vest didn't even work for the council. They were supposedly just some 'good samaritan' who cleaned it, often before the council even discovered it needed cleaning, so they just let them do it and ignored the problem. They didn't bother putting the statue up again.
Much later, we found out that the anonymous 'samaritan' had been deliberately washing the statue with a bucket of saltwater, which had dramatically corroded it, causing irreversible accumulative damage far worse than spray paint ever would have done. It's even theorized that they were also often the one spray-painting it, just so that they had an excuse to come back after a day to wash it.
a few days ago i was walkin past a basketball court and a ball Flew at me and i
1) didnât flinch

After the Parade
âHush,â he says.
Above them, Cabal ships drag thick black smoke across the flickering twilight, and flames rise from the Tower. Legionnaires scour the streets, seeking out the cries of the wounded and afraid.
âHush,â he says again, as the child starts to sniffle, and he pulls her into the shadows cast by an apartment block as a patrol makes its laborious way past. He was made to protect, made to serve, but he feels clumsy now; the hand on her shoulder is almost larger than her head and she has no armor to protect her bruised and burned skin from his rough gauntlets. When he tries to wipe the tears from her face he worries that he will be the one to break her.
He followed her screams, just as the Cabal did. He had no rifle to kill the Legionnaires that would have silenced her; dispatched the first one with his boot-knife but was not quick enough to catch the second unaware. It is dead, but his chest-plate is cracked and burned and the thing that eats the Traveler has also eaten his Light.
She is wearing yellow. A summer dress, for a celebration. When he offered her his gore-spattered hand she took it at once, and did not look back at the splayed and broken limbs visible beneath the rubble around her as though she knew there was no one left to wait for. He brushed dust and chips of concrete from the tight black curls on her head, and when she tried to smile her gap-toothed smile at him despite it all he knew that he would die the second death to save her.
They pick their way through dust-covered streets and alleys, one grimy hand holding his armored fingers, the other wrapped around the silent shell of his Ghost. He told her to keep it safe, and she clutches it to her chest with an intensity that would do any Titan proud.
To those behind the Wall, love and service. To those outside it, fury and fire. He is young: the Orderâs maxim has never meant much to him, but here at the end of an Age he feels each word burning in his chest and he wraps his Mark around her shoulders like a cloak, like a little Hunter, to keep the nearness of the night from her as best he can.
When they hear the distant bursts of gunfire he waits until the chatter fades, then leads them in a different direction even though it gives him hope to know the City is still fighting. Perhaps if he ran to the violence he would find weapons or more Guardians, but he will not risk it. And so hours pass as they slink across the city, and as slowly as his wounds force him to move she still takes ten strides for every one of his. She has only one sandal, silver leather wrapped around a tiny leg, but he thinks that a single piece of armor is better than no armor at all.
He finds a battered pulse rifle in a street that leads to a square, tries not to wonder where its owner went. The magazine is full, but it is all he has and there is no Ghost at his shoulder to synthesize ammo. He bends to pick it up, never letting go of the hand that holds his own, just as a troop of Legionnaires turn the corner in front of them.
He pulls the child behind a crumbled wall. Waits one heartbeat, two; no slug throwers roar in response. Even so, they are between him and the direction he has lead, and he doubts he has the strength to cross the City again.
Love and service to those within. Fire and fury to those without.
The Legionnaires do not notice, but neither do they move on. More join them, and they begin to spiral out in all directions, continuing their search. It will not be long before they find him and the child. A narrow street, once hung with banners but now collapsing from the rooftops down, will lead her west, to the walls, away from Cabal patrols - as long as there is a distraction.
He lifts her chin as gently as he can.
âYou have to run,â he whispers. He is bad at whispering. âIâll keep you safe.â
âThat way,â he says when she stares at him in silence, pointing with his outsized hand down the shadowed street.
He gives her a delicate push, points again. She blinks, once, then toddles into the dark, Ghost held close as though it will protect her. Perhaps, if there is a way to undo this disaster, it someday will.
He props the rifle atop the ledge, lifts his visor and sights with naked eye. There are so many, he thinks, and then bites back a laugh - there are only eight.
Love within. Fury without.
The rifle barks. One Legionnaire dies and the others spin in confusion, firing in the direction of his cover. He ignores them, squeezes the trigger again. And again. And again.
Love within. Fury without. Love within. Fury without. Love within. Fury without. Love within -
Something tugs his arm. He looks down into the eyes of the little girl, and pure terror finds him.
âI said run,â he growls, but she does not, her face set in a scowl. He shakes his arm and she does not let go.
A micro-rocket bursts against the barricade and he ducks, throws his body over her, sprays the rest of his bullets in response. The child buries her head in his cracked armor, her frail body shaking.
Never has he been so afraid to die.
He feels a fool. He tosses the rifle down, wraps one arm around the child and pulls her close. With the other he slams his visor shut. He takes a deep breath, and then another, and when at last there is a break in the constant fire he lurches to his feet, lifts the child to his chest, and runs.
It is hard, so hard, to move full Titan-plate without his Light to drive it. His body aches. Something inside is probably broken, and he does not know how long it takes a body to heal without a Ghost.
A slug hits him in the back and he stumbles but his armor holds, and he sprints down the street where he tried to send the child, the sound of jump-packs following behind. He ducks his head and cups himself around his charge, makes himself as big as he can, plows across the debris-choked pavement. The girl begins to cry again, though to his ears it is not the sound of fear but of fury, and before long he is roaring with it, and the two of them roar together down the long, narrow street as explosions scatter bits of ruins that once were homes. He does not know where he is going, knows only that he must go somewhere, that he will not stop until the child is safe or his legs no longer work; that when he has nothing left he will throw her from him and tear the Cabal apart with fists alone, Light or no.
He has stopped counting the impacts. Every step is a knife in his chest. The Legionnaires must be close but he does not turn, lest the shield that is his body fail. He can feel himself slowing, a sensation that fills him both with wonder and despair, but he cannot force himself to let her go despite his promise. Something cracks against the back of his leg, and he is too tired and too hurt to correct. He lands heavily on one shoulder, slides ten grinding yards, arms still wrapped around the child. At the very least, they will have to rip him apart to get to her. Maybe, if he dies quickly, they will not notice her at all.
Gunfire interrupts his thoughts, along with the sound of footsteps and the roar of Cabal. Hands grab him, drag him out of the street, but still he does not uncurl. He sees Hunter cloaks, Warlock robes, a Titan mark.
âHush,â he tells the child, head still tucked close, while they cower in a doorway and around them Guardians fight.
âHush,â he tells her, over their surprised cries of pain.
âHush,â he tells her, over and over, until at last all is silent and he dares to lift his head and stand.
He helps the child to her feet, and though he leans against the doorway it is her tiny hand in his that keeps him upright. He looks around at their saviors: most are near as bruised as he is. They nod their heads, pat him on the back, and he opens his mouth to ask for forgiveness, for leading the Legionnaires here, but a Hunter shakes her head as though she knows what he will say.
Two Guardians lie dead. Truly dead. One Hunter, one Titan wearing the Mark of the Gatewatch. He waits the half-second for their Ghosts to revive them, feels sick when they do not rise. He swears that he will learn their names and add them to the Order of the Pilgrim Guard.
Someone makes cooing sounds and tries to take the child, tries to give her water, but she refuses to let go of his hand, refuses to surrender his Ghost. For a moment they stand there, all seven of them in a circle around her, and it is as though a different light has risen to bond them all.
They need ships. Weapons. Food, maybe. The child, at least, must eat. The Hunter offers water again, and he wonders how many new scraps of fabric she has taken for her cloak. A different Titan, this one wearing the Mark of the Six Fronts, hands him the dead Hunterâs rifle - then looks down at the child, still clinging to his hand, and passes him a sidearm instead.
They turn their backs to the Tower, and continue their slow march to the western wall. Perhaps they will find supplies along the way. If not, so be it - they are still Guardians, and they will save what light they can.
Love within. Fury without.
The Cabal have no word for âretreat.â Soon, they will learn that the Guardians have none for âmercy.â

Guardian Slang
So after getting into a conversation with a civilian who didnât understand half of what I was saying, me and @frackingplaceholder decided to put together a short list of Guardian slang and colloquialisms. If we missed anything important, let us know.
Guardian Kiss: verb. The act of gently bumping your helmet against someone as a sign of affection. Example: She leaned over and gave her friend a Guardian kiss.
Titan Teddy Bear: noun. A type of Titan whose personality is exceedingly affectionate. Example: They hugged me and told me how much they missed me even though Iâve only been gone for a day. My teammate is a real Titan Teddy Bear.
Trip to the City: colloquialism. When a Guardian jumps off the Tower as a means of initiating Ghost revive. Not to be confused with an actual trip to the City. Example: He just went on a trip to the City, heâll be back when his Ghost catches up.
Yor-child: noun. Someone who is excessively gloomy and dramatic. Example: I canât stand them, theyâre such a yor-child.
Travelerâs Broken Ass: exclamation. Vulgar slang. Example: Travelerâs broken ass, when will they stop?!
Zavalaâs Wet Dream: colloquialism. When something goes exactly as planned with no setbacks. Example: The mission went well, it was basically Zavalaâs wet dream.
Cupidâs Knife: noun. A Hunter knife that has their contact information on it. This knife would be thrown at someone the Hunter would like to ask out on a date, or otherwise get to know better. Example: I got hit with a Cupidâs Knife so on one hand, Iâm bleeding, but on the other hand, I have a date for Saturday.
Thanat: noun. Someone who dies a lot, and is particularly dramatic about it. From Thanatonaut. Example: Theyâre being a huge thanat about getting blasted by that Walker.
Machining: verb. Talking fast, like machine gun fire. Example: She machines way too much, I canât understand her.
Even more Guardian Slang!
Hunter Bean: noun. A Hunter who has pulled their feet to their chest and wrapped their cloak around them, making them look like a bean. Example: She turned herself into a Hunter bean and fell asleep. Variations of this phenomena include the âHunter pillowâ (when another person sleeps on top of the Hunter bean) and the âHunter fortâ (when two Hunters share their cloaks for warmth, not always in a bean shape).
Titan Hello/Titan Goodbye: verb. Punching someone excessively hard when greeting or saying farewell. Example: They walked over and gave a whopping Titan Hello to their old teammate.
âThe Wall, Thoughâ: idiom. Various uses, mostly used for comedic effect right after someone makes a great big speech about something nobody listening cares about. Warlocks hear this one a lot. Example: â..and that is why it is inappropriate that we call the Hive âthe Hive,â because there is next to nothing about them that is hive-like.â // âBut the Wall, though.â
âIf I knew, I forgotâ: old Guardian saying. The full version is, âIf I knew it in my past life, I forgot it when I died.â Itâs how Guardians describe the times when they feel like they should know something, but canât recall any information on the subject. It has long been hypothesized that this type of deja vu is due to a Guardianâs first life experiences. Example: âDo you understand any of this stuff?â // âNot really. I feel like if I knew, I forgot.â
Perch: verb. The act of sitting on a ledge, catwalk, or other quiet, hard-to-find, or hard-to-reach spot on the Tower. Guardians and Civilians alike can be found perching, and though the act is technically illegal, no one will make a fuss about it if youâre not being an asshole. Example: He perched on ventilation pipe below the Tower market and watched ships fly over the City. Can also be used as a noun when referring to a specific spot. Example: She returned to her perch and took a nap.
Hunter of Paradise: noun. A Hunter who spends more time worried about their appearance than anything else. Also referred to as a Peacock Hunter. Example: Excessive hood-fixing is a common sign of a Hunter of Paradise.
Why is the city breathing down my neck?
@jencforcarolina this is from the original Destiny story, before the lead writer left prior to the release of the game. Apparently, this character was replaced by the Exo Stranger, and his character model is now Uldren.
The person here is the leader of the Crows, a sect of Guardians that rebelled against the Speaker and were looking to undermine the City and Tower. You were supposed to meet him on patrol in the Cosmodrome, and he would initially be the antagonist, but as you entered his organization, you would realize that he was the good guy. The Crows were rumored to have a base on Mars, so you would have explored there.
A list of other things cut out of the game:
Instead of being simply restricted to a PvP event, you would have direct access to the Cult of Osiris and Osiris himself on Mercury, and Osiris was originally gonna be a main character in the game, functioning on the same level as Eris Morn. The Vex were also going to be explored much further than they were in the original vanilla Destiny storyline.
Patrolling around the Cosmodrome, you would have met a strange Exo, with no Ghost beside him, but he would become an ally to you. Later in the story, you would have found out that the Exo was being controlled by Rasputin and you would have entered his vault.
Lastly, the Vex in the original story were robots created by the Traveler to assist in terraforming Mercury, turning it into a garden world, but would eventually go corrupt.
(Now I just realized that maybe the Crows, using Vex technology, went back in time and changed the timeline, to where the Traveler created the Vex, and stopped it from happening. After doing so, the Traveler granted Light to humanity and thus humanityâs Golden Age was extended further. However, light years away, Crota, testing out his abilities, tore a Rupture in the universe, causing the Vex to come out of their alternate history and into our own. Not wanting to be undone again by their own technology, they focused all efforts and resources into making themselves a permanent facet of the universe.)
Hope that answers your question, Jen.
okay but remember that scene from Harry Potter where theyâre building up the shield to protect Hogwarts in the final battle?
Imagine a line of Defenders being the Cityâs first defense, arms outstretched in an effort to uphold the purple bubble enveloping the City, from the Tower to the fallen Bannerfall.
From the sill of the empty window, Devrim sights down the barrel of his well-worn rifle. Heâs never been a religious man, but he likes both the sight lines and the vaulted ceilings that the church offers. Itâs still a beautiful building, despite the destruction around it, despite the shabby wooden boards that prop up an increasing amount of its equally shabby interior.
He holds his breath, and hand shakes slightly as the irons follow a Fallen Vandal. Ten years ago - even one year ago - his aim would have been as steady as any Guardianâs. Perhaps he canât move like them, but he could always shoot. And he could always build. Now, itâs the latter that occupies most of his time. He hesitates, and before he can pull the trigger a Titan slams into his target, crushes its skull with an armored fist, then turns and mows down a line of dregs with a familiar-looking weapon. He feels a surge of pride: he designed that rifle. A surge of something else, as well - he lifts his head from the rifle sights as the boards beneath him shake, and a Hunter bounds easily into his perch.
Their conversation is spare, transactional. Perhaps with immortality comes a disregard for the ephemeral, or at least a misunderstanding of it. Suraya would have been resentful. The old Suraya, at least: she would have questioned why she had to take the stairs when so many others were given the powers she always claimed they squandered. Sheâs gone now, in the Tower where she claimed sheâd never live, and her letters have grown less frequent. He does not begrudge her her new position; far from it. Itâs good to see her spread her wings.
He wonders, not for the first time, what it would be like not to feel winded after climbing his ramshackle stairway. Perhaps his hands would shake less. Perhaps he wouldnât care so much about his church, about the vaulted ceilings that have stood for countless years and the bricks that were placed with an evident love that sings to him even now, even over the constant sound of gunfire.
He assumes heâll never know.
He sighs, and lifts his rifle. His hand shakes, and he ignores it.

[1.1] It is young, my Kell.
[2.1] Can the dead age, Advisor?
[1.2] It is young, and it rages.
[2.2] As our people rage.
[1.3] It is young, and it rages, and it does not know why. It is dangerous. It has killed many of your Barons with its tricks.
[2.3] And we have killed many of its friends.
[silence]
[2.4] What drives it? What compels the dead to rise?
[1.4] Who among us can unravel the mysteries of the Sky-Bride, my Kell? It is full ofâŠthey call it âLight.â
[2.5] I feel only anger from it. Only hatred.Â
[1.5] As you say, my Kell. Kill it. It is consumed with fury. It has no purpose left.
[silence]
[2.6] I have questions for it.
[1.6] Why? You will learn nothing, for it knows nothing. Kill it, and let us be done. Its presence isâŠuncomfortable.
[2.7] Your tone displeases me, Advisor. You forget before whom you sit.
[1.7] I beg forgiveness, oh leader mine. But it has stolen a god, and our gods should be ours alone.
[2.8] I know what is written, wretch. Who but the Kings have kept the stories? Who but the Kings are worthy of their keeping? I, too, know the words. I, too, know the forms.
[1.8] Then destroy it! It is a foe, a broken thing, hollow of spirit and meaning. Its existence weakens the universe. It is worthy only of hatred.
[2.9] Hatred? Could you hate a doll, Advisor? I know something of hatred. Hatred is what broke our Houses. Hatred is what drove us to this place that is not our home.
[1.9] You do not understand. Destroy it, oh leader mine.
[silence]
[2.1.1] Your words have betrayed you, Advisor. Prekis. Kepsis. Take him and bind him. He speaks with another mouth.
[indistinct struggling]
[1.1.1] What - what is this? My Kell! Remember my service! Remember your honor!
[2.1.2] Wait.
[silence]
[2.1.3] You dare to speak to me of honor? You, who whisper with a wormâs tongue? What did you truly find in their tomb-warrens, I wonder. What pacts did you make in the deepness? What guest came uninvited back with you?
[1.1.2] Your words are madness.
[2.1.4] Perhaps. But once before, we were lead without knowledge. And now we are blind, as these creatures are blind. As my brother was blind, when he chased the great machine across the sky to his doom.
You would have me bow and scrape before you, Advisor. You would be my eyes, and you would lead me by a collar. But I am not so foolish as our ancestors. I have learned when not to trust.
[1.1.3] No -
[2.1.5] The Kell of Kings bows to no creature.Â
[1.1.4] My Kell, I-
[arc discharge]
[2.1.6] Burn him. Feed his ashes to the void.
[silence]
[silence]
[2.1.7] Bring the Dead Thing before me.
[silence]
[2.1.8] Now, creature. I offer you the hospitality due a worthy foe, and we will speak your language before the banner of Kings.
I am called Moon-Wolf in my tongue, He who Hates; but I do not hate you. I feel only pity, because you are no less lost than my wayward wolves. But do not mistake pity for mercy. You will tell us your secrets. And I - I shall keep them for you.
The Maw
âHey Ikora,
Just saw this sitting in the âClassifiedsâ and figured youâd want to take a look at this before Zavala got his mitts on it, considering you and I were the ones who greenlit the expedition in the first place. Was expecting the Ghost to come back and deliver this itself, not a failsafe transmission. Pretty nasty stuff here.
You know I hate to say this, but we need to rethink the regulations on extended missions to the Dreadnaught. No more Guardians going out there alone, for sure. This cannot happen a second time.â âCAYDE-6, Written by hand on a sticky-note paperclipped to the outside of the following file.

Operation Babydog
When word of Saint-14âs death reaches the City, the people grieve but are not surprised. The Speakerâs son had been gone so long, after all, that most had long ago given up hope heâd ever return. Even still, news that one of humanityâs greatest had died was dark news, and there was a great show of mourning: the people staged a parade in his honor and memory.
Not a single Titan attended.
Sentimentality was never a virtue of theirs.
Across the system, they staged counterattacks, in well-oiled fireteam strikes and in frenzied, hopeless one-man assaults. Their greatest brother would not have wanted frippery, he wouldâve wanted humanityâs enemies to pay, and for a month straight the bloodiest fighting since the end of the Red War eploded across dozens of fronts.
One Saint dies, but countless Crusades begin.
