Announcing: Eola CARES!
April 7, 2016
Eola Hills Wine Cellars announces Eola CARES, a campaign to donate $1 per bottle of sales of its newly released Patriot RED wine toward care packages for American troops stationed overseas. The public can join the effort in April and May, bringing items needed for care packages to any Eola Hills tasting room. A free wine tasting will be offered to those bringing in care package items (ages 21+).
Care packages will be assembled at the end of May with the help of volunteers, and then shipped to troops with an Oregon connection. Each care package will be filled with $15-20 worth of toiletries and food items. A list of sought-after items can be found in the tasting rooms and online at eolahillswinery.com/RED.
The Eola CARES donation campaign ties into the existing grassroots campaign called RED: Remember Everyone Deployed, where people wear a red shirt on Fridays to recognize military personnel stationed overseas. Eola is taking RED one step further by generating the funds to send care packages to those same troops.
About the wine
Eola’s RED American table wine – a blend of three varietals from three states, Oregon, Washington and California – was introduced in late 2015 with a screen printed bottle design in solid red. RED proved to be popular among people looking for a smooth, bold, and slightly sweeter red wine – currently a growing trend among wine drinkers.
The new “patriot” packaging for RED – featuring a red, white and blue American flag motif – was suggested by Steve Anderson, the head winemaker at Eola Hills for the last 20 years, and Army veteran whose ROTC scholarship made it possible for him to attend Oregon State University where he obtained a B.S. degree in horticulture.
RED retails for $20. A new product, it’s currently available only through Eola Hills’ tasting rooms and its online shop, at eolahillswinery.com.

EOLA HILLS Oregon Merlot Receives Bordeaux Inspired Value Pick of the Month
2010 Reserve “LaCréole” Oregon Merlot Selected as Value Pick of the Month by Oregon Wine Press!
The Wine
We sourced the perfect fruit from Oregon vineyards in the Applegate and Columbia Valleys to create this delicious rich, long lasting merlot. Imagine the fruit-forward scent of ripe red cherries, blueberries, tinged with the freshness of rosemary blossoms, and followed with an intense taste of dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans, with a touch of vanilla bean-spiciness that lingers on your palate.
Pairings
Enjoy with a variety of savory dishes – sautéed wild mushrooms, rosemary-infused lamb, baked pork ribs with pomegranate molasses, or beef roasted with garlic and red wine. Sharp cheddar, camembert and gouda cheese also make good matches for this wine.

In celebration of International Women’s Day next Sunday, March 8th, we’re celebrating Kate Taylor, who’s making her mark at Eola Hills Wine Cellars as assistant vineyard manager.
A native of Michigan, Kate learned about the world of wines from a colleague and wine expert, while guiding horseback tours through Yellowstone National Park. Intrigued by the story of Oregon’s unique terroir and wines, she moved west to earn a degree at the NW Viticulture Center at Chemeketa.
Says Kate, "I feel fortunate that my greatest passions come together in my work. Red wines, especially Pinot Noir - science, nature, being outdoors.” Kate can be found in the vineyards most days, right now supervising crews as they prepare the vines before bud break. In the summer, you might find her on horseback as she shares her knowledge of vines and wines with visitors to Oregon's wine country.
Cheers to making things happen here at Eola Hills Wine Cellars!
President Jefferson - A toast on President's Day
Today, we're toasting Founding Father Thomas Jefferson, our country's earliest wine expert. He toured Europe's vineyards to learn about making wines, was partner in a vineyard next to Monticello, and served 400 bottles a year in his home! Jefferson believed that America could someday produce great wines, "We could, in the United States, make as great a variety of wines as are made in Europe, not exactly the same kinds, but doubtless as good." ~ Thomas Jefferson http://ow.ly/J9fID

Poached Pears with Eola Hills “Vin d’Épice” Late Harvest Gewürtzraminer
A recipe from our Assistant Vineyard Manager, Kate Taylor
What you need: 1/2 cup Vin d'épice 1 1/2 cup Riesling 1 Cupwater 1 cup Demerara sugar 1 stick cinnamon 2 whole cloves 4 slices fresh ginger 3 Bosc or Anjou pears, quartered, cored and peeled
In a medium saucepan, combine the wines, water, sugar and spices. Cook over low heat, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Add pear quarters and place a round of parchment paper on the surface of the liquid. Cover and cook over low heat for 10-15 minutes until pears are tender but not mushy.
Remove pears to a serving dish. Simmer liquid over medium heat until sauce reduces and becomes syrupy, coating the back of a spoon. Strain to remove spices. Pour sauce over pears and serve warm with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. For more recipes, click here.
