The way that even within the full context of his quote, this comment still comes completely out of left field and then never explained further. Like Shatner just drops a nuke and casually moves on.

Pretty much everything he's said out loud or personally published reads this way, as far as I've seen. I remember reading a passage from a memoir where he casually mentions discovering gay people existed by being sexually assaulted as a teenage boy by the star of the theatre he worked at, adds a genuinely harrowing couple of paragraphs describing the context, then breezes right on to the next thing. But he'll talk about trying to befriend hippopotamuses the same way.

#by sheer chance the first star trek interview i read when i started getting into the tos production background was definitely this kind#in the space of what couldn't be much more than ten minutes the subjects he covered included

#a) montreal barbecue

#b) the fantastic kosher deli that was shipping him fresh food baskets to the set of boston legal & everyone wanting his food#and james spader was joking about converting just to get his food because he's unfortunately christian & didn't know good pastrami#and telling him he couldn't but sharing some of his food with the christians bc of their sad culinary lives anyway

#c) horses horses HORSES horses

#d) how disabled palestinian children and other arab children and any children should be as welcome in israeli horse camps as jewish ones#and in general the usa and israel should be working towards peace instead of using their resources to worsen violence

#e) how he was TOTALLY famous before star trek and could have gone back to broadway if he'd wanted to stick to his theatre roots

#f) how he was specifically bullied at school because he committed the great sin of being in /both/ athletics and theatre#so the other athletes thought he was pathetic and the other theatre nerds thought he was a jock#but also people beat him up for being jewish regardless

#g) hanging out in moishe's and chinese restaurants as a kid in montreal and still having really great memories despite the everything

#me after reading one(1) interview: okay so i'm not going to believe any st fandom osmosis about anything without sources to back it up#because i've heard soooo much about him and somehow none of it conveyed the whiplash i'm experiencing right now

#forced to believe that self consciously bizarre celebrities are trying to force what bill shatner effortlessly achieves everyday
