If there’s an economic incentive to convince people of something so they are more susceptible to buying consumer goods to ‘fix’ themselves, someone is going to try to do it and they do not give a fuck about you or how you are meant to live in the world that they are creating for you. Don’t think the whole world is against you, the primary interest groups who want you to feel horrible and insecure or ugly or unworthy.etc are very specific and they can be targeted and changed to benefit everyone once people recognise what is happening.
Traditional market analysis- “see a demand/need that is uncatered for, create a product for it”
Corporate Marketing: “Create a need, cater for that artificial need”
Create a need: “You smell bad and this makes you unattractive”
Fill a need: “buy Axe deodorant”
Create a need: “you will never be as attractive as this women”
Fill a need: “you can be more attractive with our makeup”
Create a need:”you are too large”
Fill a need: “slimfast/diet pills/cosmetics/gym memberships”
Create a need: “the woman in this dress has been photoshopped so no human being looks as flawless as she does”
Fill a need: “you can try- if you buy this dress. Look how gorgeous she looks in it, You can be gorgeous too” (the old spice ad could have been a parody of this)
Create a need: “real/attractive men are bulky, lean, trim and muscular, tall and drive hot cars”
Fill a need: “protein supplements, powders, gym memberships, platform shoes and Subaru WRX’s”
Whatever they can tell you to make you want to buy things, they WILL tell you. They don’t care how it makes you feel. They don’t care about the people who cannot achieve what is being sold to them. If you don’t buy their shit or it wouldn’t work for you anyway, you aren’t their target market, they don’t give a shit about you, they don’t give a shit about their customers. They care about one thing. Money.
What they are targeting is untapped potential insecurity in the average person- giving them goals that seem barely within-reach if they change their natural lifestyles dramatically like starving themselves- and there are lots of wonderful and helpful or motivational or forceful products and services to help you on your way to becoming an ideal that has been sold to you and many others! NOTHING makes people more inclined to buy into something than someone offering them a problem (real or imaginary) AND a solution in a neat little bundle! It’s drawing the horse with a perpetually out-of-reach carrot but with a subscription fee, making the horse pay for the privilege of starving!
Forget about what the ‘world’ tells us. What part of the ‘world’ is telling you this or has ever told you this?! Corporate fucking media and the people who have bought into their bullshit.
Corporate media: are interested in you feeling insecure and unhappy so you will buy their shit and watch their shit and think you’re on your way to becoming a better person for it.
People who have bought their shit: have a substantial personal investment in the shit they have been sold being true! They will vilify you for violating the narrative that they have swallowed hook, line and sinker! They will DEFEND the greedy interests that have made them and you miserable!
If you’re aware of the console-wars among fanboys of Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo then you can see that this is the same pathetic bullshit being fought out in real life! Companies LOVE it when people put each other into boxes or push the agenda they have bought onto other people! It’s like free advertising for their product and they get to keep their hands clean of any actual social stigmatization!
Here’s how we can begin solving it. Take what YOU think is beautiful. Believe THAT. Preach THAT. If you think something is good, fuck if it’s unpopular, fuck if it’s not in style, if you think it’s good, lovely, beautiful, wonderful- to quote Bill Hicks - “YOU’RE RIGHT!!!! YOU’RE RIGHT!! NOT THOSE OTHER PEOPLE TELLING YOU HOW TO THINK!!! YOU’RE FUCKING RIGHT!!!!”
They’re sending the message about what their notion of beauty is. But you have social media now. You have voices that can be heard, faces that can be seen. Share everything you think is beautiful and wake people up from the bullshit they have been swallowing for the last 50-100 years!!
So many of you have been doing this already but don’t feel it’s insurmountable. The people and groups perpetuating this culture of shaming women’s bodies have names and faces! Their brands, their products, you can recognise them in magazines everywhere. Their words are published!
Society acts on you? You ARE society!! Every one of you!!
Those who fall further outside of the ‘accepted’ norm will ALWAYS have it harder. THAT is a fact. Don’t let this divide you, the bullshit is being spoonfed to everyone!
Take back the notion of beauty from magazines, fashion designer companies television, hollywood and other greedy sociopathic corporate interests and return it to the real world where it belongs!
I’ll undoubtedly see so much here I’d want to re-word or re-edit but I had to get this out of my system. If you keep diverting this into a pissing contest of who’s had it worse, the assholes win and you all lose!
