If you are old enough to remember that in the 90s everyone was talking about ‘Free Tibet’? It was the trendy thing to support. There were concerts and artists shouted it from every stage. There were huge concerts to support the movement with names like Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine and many more.

And today no one is mentioning it at all. Tibet isn’t free or independent.

I am sorry (truly) for continuing to post about this. I really don't want to. It's exhausting. But for those of you who weren't born in the 1960s, or 70s or 80s, the comments above might be instructive. It's not that the problems aren't real; it's that once the famous people move on, the problems remain unsolved and forgotten.

I'll add another that younger people might remember. In the early days of the Covid pandemic, violent attacks against Asian Americans rose dramatically. Remember "Stop Asian Hate?" It was only five years ago.

(But also, it is so damn easy to attack the only Jewish-majority state in the entire world for obstinately deciding to survive.)

I used “soft fascism” as a way to describe the belief that famous people should open every aspect of their lives to fans. They don’t know who you are, and they don’t owe you anything. They’re human beings who happened to become famous. But they are still human beings with the same right to privacy as everyone else. If you don’t believe that, you are indeed a bit fashy. If you’re worried about “supporting” someone who might use drugs, just don’t support them. And don’t listen to any popular music, because most artists will have had a partying phase, at minimum.

If you don't like what you are hearing or seeing from someone, back away. You don't need to know the contents of their mind to make your decisions.
