Nomad V: OC Roots - Part 1
THESE ARE BY @cityandking !!! The questions are from their post 'oc asks: roots addition' - I reblogged on @escapisms-treasures they're so good <3 I don't tend to get a lot of asks, and I wanted to answer them for myself!
1. How many living parents does your OC have? If they're alive, where are they now and what's your OC's relationship with them? If they're dead, how did they die?
V’s parents are alive, still traveling the wastes of old America with the few left of their original clan. He has a bad relationship with them; his mother was the kinder of the two, but neither was good to their kids. He was closer to his mother; he spent most of his young years by her side, in those years, his father was far more distant while leading the clan. It was only when he got older that his Father paid more attention, but with it came horribly high standards and a short fuse. Now, as an adult, he realizes his Mother enabled a lot, and he wrestles with it, as for his father, V would happily flatline him.
2. What was your OC's first job? Do they still work that job (or in that field), or do they do something else now?
His first job in the city was cleaning at the Cojo for Mama Welles. When he was old enough to drive in the city, he started doing pickups and deliveries. Now he’s a merc with a decent rep.
3. How did your OC feel the first time they left home? Why did they leave?
V was thrown out essentially; he was left with his barely functional rig in the middle of the desert, a couple of hours outside of Night City. They packed up and left him after a huge fight, physical and verbal. This fight tore most of the clan apart. While he didn’t choose to leave, it ended up being much better that they left him.
4. What was your OC's childhood dream? Is that still their dream? If it has changed, why did it change and what's their new dream?
His childhood dream was to travel to Chicago with his sister; they had always heard rumors about the city and talked about what they’d do if they could leave the clan. But strict rules in the “family” put a stop to that. His dream is still to get out of the city, even though he loves it; he struggles with not wanting to leave behind everyone good in his life.
5. What did your OC think their life would be like when they grew up? Has it lived up to that expectation?
V always assumed he’d continue traveling, never liked the idea of staying in one place for a long time, and the quiet and cleaner air of the plains. His life isn’t what he expected, but it’s much happier than he could’ve been with the clan or on his own. He also finds himself enjoying the weight that his name holds as he’s climbed the ladder.
6. Did your OC have a teacher or a mentor growing up? What was your OC's relationship with them like?
Growing up, he was quiet and a quick learner. Usually, the things he was taught were practical and necessary. After being in the city for about a year, he met Jackie, and Mama Welles took him in. She was the one who taught him to take care of himself, how to take care of a home, and the rules of Night City. And through Mama, Pepe kept an eye on him; everywhere that Mama had eyes on Jackie, she had eyes on V.
7. Where is your OC's family from? Does your OC feel a close connection to that place? Why or why not?
They never stayed anywhere long and he never knew where his parents had started. The first place he remembers is somewhere around Nebraska (even if he didn’t know it at the time, he was quite small), but his family moved far and fast, even for nomads. They bounced around and never settled for too long, but the spring his sister was born, they stopped in northern Nebraska. He remembers the quiet, the clear night sky, hanging around one of the mechanics, but more than the place, he remembers how small she was. He remembers going to see his mother, how she smiled and showed him the baby. He remembers being tucked in early that evening.
8. Were there expectations placed on your OC when they were growing up? Have they lived up to those expectations?
V was expected to put the family first at all costs, was expected to fit the mold his parents made. They wanted their son to be a ‘strong’ man, wanted him to know how to fix and shoot, and lead. Most importantly, to be the next one to lead when his father stepped down, to grow the clan, and to serve its will. All of it, even if it meant beating their kids for simple mistakes, for creating a place where most had to tiptoe, for silencing concerns or fear.
9. Did your OC receive any kind of schooling? What did they study? How were they as a student?
His parents taught him basic things, but it was only in the city that he found himself buying second-hand textbooks and data shards. It was a good distraction in his later teens. When he wasn’t working for Mama or picking up other jobs, he was sitting on Jackie's floor reading. Even having fun when he got hold of material on mechanics
10. What's the first significant injury your OC remembers getting? Did it leave any scars?
Sure, V got into plenty of precarious situations as a kid, especially by the time his sister was old enough to get into trouble with her. His first significant injury came when he was around 14. He’d snuck keys to one of the older rigs and dragged his sister with him to “Practice driving,” he said. By the end of that evening, his arm was broken, his sister was a little bruised a few small cuts, but overall fine, and a long reaming for the risk he put on his sister. He remembers that it didn't hurt when it happened, it was only when things had settled, and he was lying in bed that he cried (gasp, how dare he).
