          ❛  so  —  do  i  want  the  marshmallow  to  burn  or  am  i  lightly  toasting  it  ?  like  will  me  burning  it  ruin  it  or  enhance  the  experience  ?  ❜  esme  asked ,  expression  focused  on  the  marshmallow  at  the  end  of  the  stick  she  was  holding .  esme  made  s’mores  one  time  at  the  fire  pit  of  her  childhood  home  when  she  was  eight  with  her  childhood  nanny ,  but  it’s  been  a  long  time  since  then ,  and  stevie  was  conveniently  sat  next  to  esme  on  the  same  log ,  so  she  decided  to  totally  casually  and  nonchalantly  ask  for  stevie’s  input .  ❛  the  last  time  i  ate  marshmallows  was  two  years  ago  at  emma  stone’s  house .  she’s  a  fantastic  cook,  and  she  made  us  homemade  marshmallows  with  pure  vanilla  extract  she  picked  up  from  mexico  and  it  was  like  —  oh  my  god  they  were  amazing .  emma’s  truly  gifted  in  the  culinary  arts .  ❜  esme  pulled  the  marshmallow  to  her  face ,  inspecting  it .  ❛  does  this  look  ready  to  you  ?  ❜  esme  asked .

               (  saturday ,  may  28th  —  11:58  am  )  

          it’s  hot ,  esme  found  out  this  morning  that  she  was  sharing  a  cabin  with  someone  when  she  specifically  requested  a  single  cabin  (  ‘  esme ,  honey ,  they  don’t  have  the  space,  and  we  can’t  exactly  build  you  a  new  cabin  in  a  day  ’  —  ‘  and  why  not  ?  aren’t  you  the  one  pouring  your  savings  into  this  ?  ) ,  and  as  esme  just  finished  unpacking  the  last  of  her  clothes  she  realized  she  was  ravenous .  she  made  her  way  to  the  mess  hall  to  see  if  the  chef  could  whip  her  up  something  delicious .  a  watermelon  sangria  and  some  rosemary  roasted  la  bonnotte  potatoes  sounded  divine  right  about  now .  she  took  in  her  surroundings  as  she  walked ,  people  watching  the  new  counselors  momentarily  before  spotting  someone  that  seemed  oddly  familiar .  it  wasn’t  until  esme  saw  her  profile  did  she  realize  that  she  was  looking  at  sloane  buchanan  in  the  flesh .  esme  was  a  little  stunned  to  be  seeing  someone  of  her  social  circle  here .  she’s  about  to  just  keep  on  walking  when  sloane  met  her  gaze ,  and  the  speed  with  which  esme’s  practiced  smile  spread  on  her  face  was  a  little  unsettling .  ❛  sloane  !  hi ,  ❜  esme  greeted ,  walking  up  to  her  and  giving  her  an  exaggerated  air  kiss  on  both  cheeks .  ❛  it’s  so  lovely  seeing  you  here .  what  are  you  doing  here ,  exactly  ?  not  exactly  a  place  i’d  expect  to  see  steve  and  diana’s  sweet  little  girl  —  how  are  mom  and  dad  doing  anyway  ?  ❜

          esme  dodged  the  air  of  smoke  just  barely ,  her  face  immediately  forming  one  of  disgust .  ❛  that’s  so  gross  —  what  the  fuck ,  ❜  she  batted  the  smoke  away  dramatically ,  looking  at  jessie  and  ignoring  the  happy  screaming  kids  in  the  background .  ❛  ghosts  aren’t  real  —  what  are  we,  five  ?  ❜  esme’s  lips  pursed  —  perhaps  sneaking  away  on  the  outskirts  of  the  bonfire  for  a  moment  with  a  fellow  counselor  wasn’t  a  good  idea ,  but  esme  took  any  opportunity  to  dip  away  from  her  counselor  responsibilities  for  a  second .  ❛  i  am  being  absolutely  eaten  by  mosquitoes  —  i’m  this  close  to  legitimately  drinking  bug  spray .  ❜  esme  smoothed  down  her  khakis  before  looking  up  at  jessie .  ❛  anyway,  like  i  said,  ghosts  are  total  make  believe ,  and  if  said  ghost  were  to  invade  my  personal  space  like  you  just  did ,  i’d  be  more  angry  than  impressed .  ❜  esme  folded  her  hands  over  her  chest ,  mindlessly  scratching  at  a  mosquito  bite  on  her  arm .

          ❛  do  you  think  your  age  group  will  really  understand  that  ?  i  think  your  scary  story  could  use  some  work .  ❜  maybe  there  was  some  irony  in  working  on  spooking  the  campers  a  little  bit  despite  the  news  about  camp  silver  lake ,  but  esme  promised  her  dad  to  make  this  an  authentic  sleep - away  camp  experience  for  the  kids ,  and  scary  stories  seemed  to  naturally  be  part  of  it .  not  that  esme  knew  from  experience ,  but  she’d  heard  of  other  people’s  camp  memories .  esme’s  also  seen  the  parent  trap,  but  if  pranks  and  a  long  lost  twin  was  in  the  cards  for  her  this  summer ,  esme  would  need  a  long  weekend  away  in  the  hamptons  to  recharge .  ❛  maybe  like  —  i  don’t  know ,  use  something  that  scares  you .  for  example ,  i’m  scared  of  the  zara  return  line  and  people  who  mispronounce  hors  d'oeuvres .  okay ,  your  turn .  ❜

          esme’s  eyes  looked  maia  up  and  down  at  her  words  as  they  walked  to  lunch ,  pursuing  her  lips  as  she  assessed  maia’s  outfit .  ❛  while  i’m  totally  on  board  with  the  like  “  fuck  this  uniform  ”  trend ,  i  don’t  know  if  this  is  the  way  to  protest .  ❜  though  once  trendy ,  esme  didn’t  know  if  graphic  tees  were  particularly  in .  ❛  i’m  more  than  happy  to  let  you  borrow  one  of  my  shirts .  we  can  protest  together .  can  we  please  include  these  khakis  too  —  i  swore  to  anna  herself  i’d  never  wear  something  like  this .  ❜  esme  tugged  at  the  bottom  of  her  shorts  with  a  huff  before  meeting  maia’s  eyes ,  giving  her  a  pointed  look.  ❛  anna  wintour ,  of  course .  ❜  if  esme  were  to  redo  their  uniforms  it’d  have  some  fashion  and  flare  to  it  —  though  she  understood  vintage  looks ,  esme  was  just  barely  pulling  this  off .

          she  was  being  nice  —  trying  to  be  a  model  citizen  as  she  sat  at  one  of  the  tables  at  breakfast  where  a  guy  was  sitting  on  his  own .  and  honestly ,  it’s  not  esme’s  fault  —  it’s  so  fucking  early ,  she’s  practically  snoring  into  her  waffles  (  extra  maple  syrup ,  thank  you  very  much  ) ,  and  it’s  hard  to  focus .  so  whatever  this  guy  (  mark ,  mike ,  max  ?  )  was  droning  on  about  was  going  right  over  her  head  as  esme  zoned  out ,  staring  at  a  spot  right  above  his  left  ear .  and  though  esme  was  used  to  faking  a  smile  and  nodding  along  at  extravagant  parties  where  she  had  some  of  the  most  boring  conversations ,  she’s  opting  for  honesty  this  time .  ❛  sorry  but  —  literally  what  are  we  talking  about  ?  this  eight  am  wake  up  call  is  not  cute,  i  barely  had  my  me  -  time  to  lay  in  bed  and  wake  up  naturally ,  ❜  esme  straightened  up ,  blinking  a  few  times  and  taking  a  sip  of  her  coffee  again .  ❛  anyway,  which  album  is  this  ?  as  a  musician ,  i  know  my  music .  ❜

           esme  stopped  in  her  tracks ,  turning  around  to  see  clementine  poking  her  head  out  of  the  mess  hall  doors .    ❛  what  ?  they’re  just  eating  —  they’re  eleven  year  olds ,  clem ,  i’m  not  gonna  spoon  feed  them .  ❜  esme  said  with  a  shrug ,  a  little  fussy  over  the  fact  that  she  was  caught  trying  to  escape  her  counselor  duties  so  early  but  seriously  —  watching  children  eat  made  esme  lose  her  own  appetite  easily .  and  besides ,  she  was  just  headed  to  her  own  cabin  to  reapply  sunblock ,  and  maybe  get  some  much  needed  alone  time  away  from  work .  ❛  join  me ,  by  all  means .  i  would  have  been  back  before  any  of  them  got  to  chow  down  on  their  chocolate  chip  cookies .  ❜  there’s  worse  company  than  clementine ,  esme  figured .
