hypatia can feel her strength and confidence shedding like snake skin as she stands there and stares into the darkness. it's involuntary — she doesn't want to look weaker than she is, but maybe @estacahdo can see right through her. maybe his power far expands beyond the rumors and tales, diving deep into truth-telling and soul-searching. at once, he unfurls her logic, spits her language right back out at her, and reveals a flaw. "andraste preserve me," she hears herself whisper, attempting to calm her nerves. "i'm sorry. that was... you can tell i'm new at this." maybe it's not wise to put all her cards on the table at once, opening up to the mystery of this powerful person, but... maybe that's what he least expects. "i've never led anything in my life," she goes on to confess, "and i really have no idea how to convince you to help the inquisition. i can say... there are thousands of innocent lives in thedas that need saving, and your powers could help preserve them. i could tell you the venatori are crawling all over these woods, and i've heard them whisper your name. are they searching for you for allyship, or for your death? or i could just come right out and tell you i need your help." suddenly forceful, hypatia brandishes her desperation in the soft gaze directed straight at jackie in the dark. she thinks she can find his eyes, but she has no idea if that's really what she stares at. a shine on his mask, a helmet, a gauntlet... "i'm not going to use you. i don't want to hurt you or trick you or cause you any pain. i'm the one here, throwing myself at you, pleading for your help." hypatia pauses and nods. "please consider the voice of an inexperienced woman scrambling for friends in this dark time. we could really use your help out there. and you could kill a lot of venatori..."

❝ clearly. ❞ jackie deadpans. being able to read her like an open book isn’t some mystical power. it’s just knowing how people work—— especially when they want something, need something. her desperation is palpable to the point they can taste it, though he doesn’t revel in it. she’s not desperate for her own life, she’s desperate for the lives of others.

❝ likely both, but that's nothing new for me. ❞ just like you jackie. your desperation for her repulses us. jenny probably believes it's some kind of omen, the darkness that enshrouds in protection with no way in and no way out where they've found refuge, but it’s been him all along. if it's not demons from tears, it's the venatori babbling out pleas to be spared before tearing out their skeleton with a satisfying pop from the sockets or ramblings of awe as they’re eaten alive, slurped up and sucked down to the marrow. some of them saw the cracks in corypheus, but a future in him and the darkness instead. which would’ve made him laugh if it didn’t disgust him more. the rest just want revenge after killing their sick twisted blood sacrificing ritual loving friends. just another day.

but it isn’t every day he has a woman throwing herself at him like this, let alone the inquisitor. before all this, before inheriting the darkness, he would’ve entertained it with honeyed words and a charming smile and a glint in his eye as any crow knows how, but this is different. he’s different. she’s different. she’s earnest. too earnest jackie, a cruel laugh echoes in his head, clearly revelling in his plight, too soft jackie. somehow, she’s hit his achilles heel.

jackie sighs. he can't keep this up forever. and as the saying goes: the enemy of my enemy is my friend. ❝ since you're so insistent on this, i'll make this clear: ❞ he’ll meet her that far for her honesty, in both his words and an appearance beyond the gloom, stepping down and towards the soft ray of light, towards her. ❝ there'll be demands, and a price. a price that could go against everything that makes you, you. you’ll owe me. and not just as the inquisitor, but as hypatia. do you understand? ❞ do you still want this?

jackie should’ve known they’d send in their ace. the earpiece he’d stolen to listen in on movement gave enough clues. he thought he had enough time, a swift in and out, but he was discovered red handed collecting intel. intel promptly removed because jake-goode-a-very-normal-whistleblower-caught-in-something-far-bigger-than-himself shouldn’t be endangering his life with something this classified, let alone be here in the middle of an outbreak. so now he’s stuck with him and the usb in his hip pouch containing every existing copy of research about him he’d rather see destroyed.

doing anything now would be too risky. one wrong move and his second shot’s gone. so he bides his time, pretends, waits for an opportunity to rear its head to steal it during a commotion and go. and it did. under the cover of his leather jacket, jackie discreetly brings heist to life, and bumping back to back while covering his blind spot as a way to get close, heist slips into one of the pouches to rifle for it. jackpot boss, heist reports once it’s over and they’re catching their breath, got the stick. thank fuck.

❝ i guess i'm not used to being the one who needs to be protected. ❞ @kenneidy quips.

he’s not used to being the one doing the saving, let alone the protecting, so that makes the two of them. that also means he owes him one now, which is always a plus. jackie smiles, all charm. ❝ don’t worry, i’m sure you’ll make it up to me soon enough. ❞

keep quiet, don’t move. all he has to do now is figure out a way to get close enough for heist to slip out again all while unnoticed by the most paranoid man he's ever met. and in the meantime while he does, build on the trust. ❝ you usually work alone like this? ❞

over-worrying and overthinking everything, your mind is always a whirling storm. no matter how you try, the fears overwhelm all else. you need someone trusted to press a kiss to your forehead, helping to quiet the thoughts that just refuse to settle.

one thing you gotta appreciate in Carpenter’s The Thing is that it is also a horror from the POV of the monster. At the end of the day it’s a movie about a bunch of assholes isolated in the middle of nowhere doing what they can to survive, and by “doing what they can” I mean freaking out and screaming and throwing up. this also includes the Thing.

jackie isn’t new to the concept of having a target on his back, but coming from supernatural forces rather then the predictability of hired hits to make one’s bones to earn large means there’s always an element he has to be quick about on his feet, barely surviving some of the close calls. alexandra trese was born and trained into this life, and it’s clear in her vast experience and knowledge that even the smallest intricacies are known and carefully considered. he can’t deny it's even saved his life—— though he knows that decision wasn’t made out of the goodness of her heart. it was all pre-calculated —— he's the lesser of the two evils —— because she’s been an absolute pain in his ass and impossible to get rid of ever since. and it's even worse when he owes her one, like right now.

❝ you should try picking up a phone occasionally. ❞ @stelegy deadpans.

❝ ever thought that maybe i actively ignore your calls? ❞ jackie shoots back, effortlessly appearing from the shadows of their rendezvous point. she’s lucky he was there at the time, fully ignoring the third call only to be picked up by screecher—— and then immediately and personally taken away from screecher because the last time he had phone privileges, he ended up making a scam caller’s ears bleed out. so much for a quiet night in.

jackie easily matches her stride beside her, hands in his trouser pockets. ❝ y’gonna continue keeping me in suspense or is this where you finally tell me why i’m here. ❞

"i came alone to speak with you," hypatia murmurs, her palms displayed towards the intimidating figure. "no weapons. no magic. no plans to hurt you. my allies are just over that ridge — this isn't a trick to get you to work with us. this is... this is us talking." it remains dark in the shadow of this large cave entrance, the darkness concealing the shape of the man she's come to see. "many people speak of your power, but none of them have ever spoken about you, the person behind that power. can i be the first to ask, and to... talk with you? maybe align with you?" she can't find his eyes in the dark; the cave provides a heavy shelter from the sunlight outside. "you can't do the sun. i get it. so i'll just stay here... and we can talk, and i'll tell you how i can help you if you help me in return. does that sound good?" another pause. "i'm hypatia. what's your name?"

the darklings surrounding every corner go still and quiet, and jackie lets her voice her speech and think what she believes. it’s not like he has much of a choice anyway, not without revealing his identity to the entirety of thedas—— even though he won’t burn to a crisp like she infers. good to see that myth’s still making the rounds.

he knows why she’s here beyond wanting to talk: corypheus. venatori. she’s not the first. he’s heard both of their offers in allegiance, promises of worship and reverence, kingly riches and anything and everything a man could possibly want and still desire, regardless of the heavy inhumane cost, but he’s not that man. his answer was drawing tainted blood from a tevinter magister while telling him where to stick his god complex and his boys earning themselves a cult themed feast. he’s still considering what kind of answer to give her.

❝ you’re not very good at this, are you, hypatia. ❞ jackie notes, subharmonics curling around her name as if they’re tasting it, glowing eyes piercing into her from beyond the dense gloom. ❝ ‘this isn’t a trick to get you to work with us,’ but ‘you can help me if i help you in return.’ ❞ he repeats her words back to her. a novice mistake in negotiation to contradict herself. she’s either bold or desperate. he wonders if the inquisition even knows their inquisitor is seeking out less approving allies to her cause. ❝ that sounds exactly like a proposition. with a catch. ❞

jackie’s comic material is dark, gritty and edgy. the typical 90’s era stuff. and definitely intended for mature audiences with the violence, gore and horror. published by top cow, the darkness and its main themes delve into the corruption of absolute power, the duality of human nature, and the struggle between primal forces of chaos and order, dark and light. there are a few writers which result in good runs and, sadly, some bad runs, but that's usually to be expected when you're reading comics. if you’ve read and like hellblazer, it’s got a similar beat imo!

jackie is an anti-hero. he starts off as a selfish criminal indulging in his work and the lavish lifestyle of fancy cars and beautiful women (and handsome men)—— until he inherits his birthright of an ancient, demonic force, kickstarting the exploration of his journey into a reluctant, complex anti-hero. i’ve personally gone further into this by answering what would happen next after jackie successfully severed himself from franchetti and his past life permanently by establishing on the darkness / batman crossover and actively going against crime, for who better is there to turn to with existential heavy questions than his near mirror image? but there’s also pivotal points with his childhood best friend jenny romano throughout his life who always saw good in him —— his fierce loyalty, love and kindness as he always protected her —— despite witnessing who he became under franchetti’s wing, turning him into something she could nearly no longer recognise. her goodbye has a lasting heavy impact on him when she decided it was best for her to leave after her ordeal with the brotherhood and discovery of jackie being the darkness (something jackie didn’t stop her from doing, also wishing for her to be safe, even though he’s felt incredibly lonely ever since).

jackie’s enemies are actually far more malevolent then him. the angelus’ sole purpose is to kill the darkness by any means necessary and will use her chosen host as a puppet to do so. after fulfilling this purpose, angelus wants to rule the world and enforce a totalitarian order over it. she doesn't feel empathy for any life (except for her familiars). sonatine is an ambitious and greedy man with an intense desire to control the world and horrifically abuses his powers and abilities of mind control on others in horrific ways, even on innocents, on his path to achieve it. on a personal level for jackie, sonatine is directly responsible for his criminal upbringing as he told frankie franchetti he would make him mighty if he adopted him. in the comics the vatican are a powerful organisation that have many world-dominating ambitions as well as arcane knowledge regarding the existence of the supernatural, which they’ve hid from the world for their own gain and keep the public in the dark about to maintain their outward image of being oh so benevolent and holy. no one is truly good in this universe!

jackie and the darkness have a very complex dynamic. think eddie and venom but toxic and doomed. they have moments of harmony, even pleasure that he's indulged in, but the darkness is and will always be a chaotic and sentient power that constantly tempts its host toward evil, ruin, and indiscriminate destruction, thriving on the dark impulses of its wielder, turning it against them in ways that will tempt and sway. something that jackie staunchly rebels against as he follows a personal code of loyalty, avoiding harming innocents while grappling with the atrocities the darkness compels him to commit. jackie actively struggles against his preordained destiny as a "vessel" for evil, attempting to use the power for and on his own terms rather than letting it control him. because of these facts, jackie has the strongest willpower out of all of his ancestors who came before him. but even so, the constant psychological battle can be a distraction and wears him down, making him cruelly suffer, which the darkness enjoys. it's a curse rather then a gift. a parasite rather then a mutualist.

jackie’s major weakness is the light, despite being immortal and stupidly op. intense sunlight and magical or holy light are his primary threats. intense artifical light can also do the trick (i.e. flash grenades) in being painful and destabilising him. even mundane artificial lighting (i.e. lamps) can limit or stop the darkness from manifesting as it needs to “breathe” in order to manifest. angelus can destroy his created constructs, armour, and minions (darklings) with her light, as well as any weaponry she creates (i.e. the sun dagger). and while he can survive in many places, holy ground / sites can weaken or harm him.
