okay so i cant believe i wasnt following you. i could swear i was. *shakes fist at tumblr* I love how you paint and i was kinda wondering if you could tell me/us a bit about how you colour your art?

Aaa thank you!! ;v; and yes absolutely! I WILL TRY MY BEST, but honestly it might be easier to just screenshot a quick tutorial for you when I have more time. I also tend to change up my coloring technique a lot, it typically depends on the picture so if you have one in mind I can probably explain that particular process better??

I generally start by getting a rough idea of the color scheme I want. Sometimes it helps to take several thumbnails of your sketch and throw different color variations on it to feel out the mood and atmosphere (it often tends to change later on anyway but it’s still helpful to have a starting point). Once I have a loose plan, I block in the mid-tones and roughly start shading on a new layer that’s usually set to Multiply at low opacity.

Nothing is really blended at this point, I focus mainly on light source accuracy and getting the contrast down, and I often have references up to help me with that. From there, the eye-dropper tool becomes my best friend and I blend the shit out of everything. I really don’t like to overdo this part, it’s a personal preference to keep some of the shading harder and more defined, like under the nose, along the jaw and temples etc.

An alternative technique is to shade everything in black and white, then start adding color to it with an overlay layer, which is what I typically do for my portrait commissions!

One thing that is consistent for my process is adding adjustment layers to tweak certain things like contrast and saturation. Experiment a lot, especially with things you wouldn’t normally do. Try throwing an overlay layer over it and fill it with a random color (i default to blue), then lower the opacity. Try other colors to pump up the vibrancy or to help tie everything together to get your desired color scheme. Try creating another layer and setting it to Luminosity or soft light, and add some back-lighting to your picture. Just see what looks cool and have fun with it!
