I’d sooner spit the blood in my mouth at you than swallow it. I will throw your pride in your face before I swallow mine.
Deep brown orbs, the color of old oak in front of a crackling fire slipped into crimson as black veins made their way through pale skin, showing that he was more monster than man in that moment.
Jason’s gaze met the other’s as blood dripped from his hands, his clothes smeared in the metallic life force that he seemed to be drenched in.
His victim lay at his feet, their heart still warm in his palm.
“He had it coming .. ” he breathed, his chest heaving and voice stern, almost too calm.
“No one comes after you. No one.”
Everything seemed to happen in a few chaotic moments. The hound was shadowing another that was desperately trying to find a way out of the predicament they’d put themselves in, attempting to run from a Hellhound was futile. He was about to deal the death blow when-
Movement from behind caught his attention, and the unmistakable sound of flesh being torn.
Gage recognized Jason but the fact that he was holding a still beating heart in his hand took him slightly off guard as did his words.
“I don’t understand, where’d you come from and what do you mean? Thank you if this was some sort of ambush but you shouldn’t put yourself in any danger either.” He said briefly turning from Jason to his mark that lay on the ground close to death but not close enough.
“Just die already.” he said giving the person’s head a hard yet smoldering stomp-well they were dead now.
He knew Jason enjoyed this type of stuff but to watch his back or came to his aide was more than appreciated. The one Jason had laid waste do was unrecognizable, so it was clear more happened than just in those few moments when everything began.
“If these assholes start sending people to shadow them or jobs just got a lot more difficult.”

Florescent lights blinked overhead as Chase waited in the hall for Gage to pass. Minutes felt like months as his inside fluttered with the news he had. He’d been working on this in secret for months, and finally, he’d cracked the code. He had a way to help his grandfather, and there was no way in hell he was going to pass it up. The lights buzzed, humming gently above their heads, casting a sickly white glow over everything it touched. Finally, after what felt like forever, he saw a mop of golden curls coming toward him, washed out in the white emittance and for the first time in a long time he felt giddy.
As the other approached, he reached out into the crowd, grabbing Gage’s arm. Before his friend was even fully aware of what was happening, Chase was pulling him into a janitor’s closet. The door closed quickly and quietly behind him, and Chase pressed a hand over his friend’s mouth.
“It’s me! It’s just me,” he assured, pushing a few flyaway strands of his dyed green hair out of his eyes. “Don’t freak out. I just needed you in here and I needed to do it as quickly as possible so we didn’t get noticed.”
As he spoke, he unzipped his bag, pulling out a pile of papers that all had multiple questions and answers crossed out and the reanswered until things fell just as he needed them to.
“I did it! I found a way to beat the fucking system and I can help my grandad, but I…. Gage, I need help. I can’t do this by myself….” He was talking so fast he hadn’t even really realized he hadn’t fully explained himself yet so he backtracked. “I found a way to get us topside. I found a way to get us to the fucking surface.”
He of course knew the risk that was involved if they were caught cheating, and he knew this was an insane suicide mission…. but he hated to admit, he was terrified of acting alone.
Each and every day seemed the same these last few weeks, nothing but prep about the ‘test’ that everyone had to take. And the fact that it solidified your place in life for the rest of it, was just not something that should’ve hinged on one test. Unfortunately, he should’ve been used to that now because that was how life was. You had a “choice” in theory, but in the end, it wasn’t your idea at all. And the way things where it wasn’t something that you questioned either. Thankfully after tomorrow, it would all be over.
Now in the bustle of the hallways, the light in there was enough to make anyone do as they were asked without question simply because there had to be something better than this. Or, so that was a thing that was dangled from time to time. However, it was the fact that what getting to the surface meant wasn’t all that great anyway, unless you were one of the rich. He’d barely sidestepped a group that was excitedly talking about a study group for the test that really had no “wrong” answers.
“What the-” Gage said, as he was suddenly yanked into a small space.
When he realized this wasn’t some sort of gag it was Chase…and what the hell was going on about?
“Whoa! Slow down-” he began finally getting the hand from his mouth, “…you could nearly suffocate someone like that.”
Chase was really the only one is the school that he could say he dealt with on a regular basis as well as they seemed to wind up in a lot of the same places at the same time. So it was safe to assume that they did know each other and even safer that they were friends. Perhaps it was because of Chase’s energy because he was always so outgoing about things it was impossible not to notice unless you weren’t there. But aside from that he was a good guy and seemed to a way about picking out the good in most, even him though he tried his best not to let that be seen.
Gage’s eye went wide as he saw the contraband contents of his friend’s bag, “Jesus are you crazy? Having that could get you in a world of hurt-”
Then he heard the part about leaving if anyone could think of a way to do that it would be Chase. It was the execution of it that was risky one wrong move would be deadly.
“Really Chase slow down, how can you help your Grandad? And how do you expect us to do anything that deviates without causing suspicion? Like now us talking about this here?” he whispered while he listened to the sounds of the others students going by in the hall.
Then there was yet another announcement about tomorrow’s test, “You want me to go where?”

Chase glanced over to the door and then to his watch. “Fine, but fair warning. This late in the day, if I leave now, I’m not coming back in. I say we take our investigation off school grounds. It might converge here, but there’s a lot of shit happening,” he thought aloud as he realized with a great level of joy, that once he got outside, he could have a smoke.
Standing from the table he grabbed his bookbag and a bottle of water he’d bought out of the machine only a few minutes ago. Briefly he thought about turning its contents to vodka, but then decided against it. It wouldn’t be smart especially if he and Gage came into contact with their vargulf, or whatever the hell else was out here killing people. Sure, they could hold their own and take care of business, but he understood that since they weren’t the only ones involved, it would have to be discreet. There was a way to handle these things, and drunkenly was not it.
Getting up, he followed the other outside and around the side of the building. They didn’t have to walk too far before they’d be off school grounds. “I agree. The whole uh…..” he started before pausing, something on angel radio catching his attention for only a moment. It was just loud static. It happened sometimes when there was in influx of prayers all at once. It was like reverb feedback on a microphone. It happened every time there was everything from a natural disaster to a street bombing. A plane falling. A multiple car pile up. Anything that would cause many people to pray for the same thing at once. His face was blank as he shook off the noise and the sickening feeling that came with it.
“Wait…. what was I saying? Oh! I agree. The whole Christina thing,” he started over. “I have no evidence saying she’s our main issue, but I can’t argue that she isn’t an issue all on her own. If she keeps sticking her nose in, not only is she gonna make things harder for everyone, but she’s going to wind up getting herself hurt or killed.”
“That’s fine I’ve been ready to go since second period the air is clearer away from here anyway. If she antagonizes Luxuria anymore I will speed up that gray streak for her free of charge.” Gage said watching the other to see how he would take that the last part of the statement.
To be back outside it was so much better as the building felt smaller and smaller by the moment. The only thing he was truly looking forward to tomorrow was gym class. There were a few jocks he was looking forward to causing a few season-ending injuries.
Ooops!
When Chase suddenly stopped speaking, it caused the Hound to pause as well immediately looking around. Thinking the other sensed something he had, it was just that it was something internal not external. That was something Gage was glad that stopped when he was going through his change. The voices…so many things saying nothing and everything at the same time. If he had known, then when he knew now that to get them to stop was to simply give himself over to what was inside of him. The unstoppable force, threatening to rip him apart from the inside out. It would have been over so much sooner if only he’d reconciled himself with the beast within before it had to go on for so long.
“How bad is it?” he asked, truly curious if it worked the same for Chase, “I can’t distinguish when I have an overload but on only listen for a couple of voices. The rest then becomes murmuring background noise.”
Crumpling up the milk carton he incinerated it to ash as they walked along.
“Since we are not alone in how we feel your cousin might have some idea as well. If it’s it one thing girls do is talk, even if they are being vicious. That might be something worth looking into as well.”

【SO COME AND GET ME】
Unexpected Guest
Alex could hear Gage, but he could also hear the snarling and growling that never seemed to cease. That was when the voices started. Voices he’d never forget. Voices begging for life. His children that he simply couldn’t save. He had tried…. he swore he had. They were demons. They were vile……
He was sorry. He mourned them all and he hated that he’d ever created them, and in turn, he hated destroying them. It had to be him though… it had to. Nodding, he listened to Gage, stopping abruptly. He feared he would feel teeth sink into his skin any moment, but he had to believe the hound. ‘
Why? The voices asked him. Why would you believe a creature of hell? He’s made of the same brimstone you fight so hard to destroy!
“I trust you,” he breathed, his voice weak, but his faith was much, much stronger than his voice. If this hellhound would protect Luxuria, he would protect him as well. He had to trust that, and thus far, Gage had never lied to him. “I’m sorry,” he breathed, hoping to quiet those voices. He needed them to stop.
Illusions were the most perfect and the most dangerous weapon thus why they were a staple in the arsenal of those demons and holy alike. What made them so dangerous was that they could be indistinguishable even to the most perceptive of minds. Especially if you’d been caught in a place where what you were being shown was something that was close to your heart. That was how they did their job best. Unfortunately, Alex was a prime candidate simply because of who he was and his past.
“Don’t listen to them, just concentrate on me. They must face what’s waiting for them here, whatever it is.” Gage said as he could hear the undertone of some of the wails that plagued the other.
To him, they were akin to when that random mosquito hums in your ear. Unexpected yet annoying but nothing to arouse any form of real distress. Gage had been in this place once, during his own time of transformation and it was every bit as unbearable as Alex was displaying. Nothing could be trusted not your eyes, ears, or basic common sense. Everything attacked your core because it knew the name and number for the monster that was underneath your bed.
Gage could feel Alex but it wasn’t until he heard that he trusted him that he could begin to extract him from the space. The consent was a way of appealing to the subjects conscious mind that still knew this wasn’t as real as it seemed. Thankfully Alex was strong, that was the only way he was able to make to Lust’s apartment. If he’d been a lesser being this would’ve been much more difficult and perhaps impossible.
“Thank you for that. I’ve got you, and I will not let you go or leave you.” Gage said as he heard the apology to those he felt he’d wronged to appease them to stop.
It was a little difficult because there were so many. But after destroying a couple more that were egging other creatures on the tide turned in their favor. Gage spoke again, “The best way I can describe the next sensation is going to be like coming to an abrupt, hard stop. It won’t be painful I promise, it’ll just be surprising okay?”
