Season 14 Episode 8: Out of Nowhere

Synopsis:

It’s the big one, it’s the Season 14 Mid-Season Finale! I don’t know if I can wait until the Jan 18th! Anywho, let’s dive in...

The episode opens with a shirtless Ben prepping for the fire academy. Meanwhile Mer is getting interviewed after winning the Harper Avery, to which she’s unimpressed and feels a bit tortured with their questions. JO GOT CHIEF RESIDENT!! As she practices the speech she plans to give her interns with Alex, she is trying to embody her inner Bailey (aka trying to be scary), but he comically admits that unfortunately she’s not scary. They’re interrupted by the sound of Deluca and Sam in the on call room, something that has been happening a lot recently (bow-chicka-wow-wow).

Carina, Owen, and Arizona are all crammed in the elevator together, and April, who is quiet in the back, represents all of us watching when she points out how awkward it is. Bailey wants to pawn off the surgical contest bestowed to her by Jackson to Webber because she wants to stay in the game, but he rejects her for the same reason. He then only agrees to do it if he can know who the donor is, to which she rebuts that he owes her (for allowing Ben to use his time as a firefighter to be the equivalent of a fellowship, since he will be working in the medic program) and he finally agrees to (but it’s only temporary).

The intern working with Maggie makes an inappropriate comment to the patient about waiting too long to come in, to which Jackson shuts down instantly. Their patient has an extremely awkward interaction with his visitor, making their relationship really hard to read.

Mer’s working with Glasses and their patient makes a joke that he takes literally. Jolex is working a case together! Their patient is a young boy who had a stroke recently. He’s super smart and is up to date on his case, he then comically informs Jolex that his mom has a crush on Karev, and almost as if on cue she walks in. As they leave Jo teases Alex, and he teases back that that’s why he got into pediatrics, for the moms lol. Jackson and Maggie try to figure out their patient and his visitor's relationship, when the woman comes to get them since her father’s not breathing (so now we know he’s the dad). As they are trying to intubate him, the monitor begins to wig out.

In the pit, every patient begins to code, but on closer examination, it’s revealed that they are all fine. Unfortunately one guy found out a little too late, as one of the interns shocked him out of his nice nap (girl ABC’s, or even CAB you check the airway breathing circulation or circulation airway breathing, either way you check that first before you shock someone)!

Owen tells his intern to calm the patients down, because clearly there is a technical difficulty, and what starts off as a comforting message turns south as she begins to get nervous herself.

Mer’s patient is quite nervous for her first ever hospital procedure, but Grey reassures her that she will be fine. Jolex’s patient is experiencing another headache, which could be an indication of another stroke. They go to look at his chart, but the screen is locked. Bailey and Arizona are trying to get into her medical records, when the IT tech comes to help. Then a message pops up on the screen, they’ve been hacked and their medical records and systems are being held for ransom. If they don’t pay, the records will be destroyed endangering hundreds of lives. Bailey speaks with some of the attendings trying to figure out how they are going to handle the situation. At first she yells at IT about the ineffective cyber security seminar, but he informs her that it wasn’t until this coming week (pointing out the irony of the situation). As she tells all the attendings to remain calm and to try not to worry the patients, the FBI walks in, stealing her thunder.

Webber switches everyone to paper charts, and orders everyone to take manual vitals. Maggie and Jackson’s patient is in critical condition and we find out that the daughter is estranged (hence the awkwardness). Mer is in the middle of her surgery when she finds out about the hacking, but they are still able to continue because the monitors in the OR have not been fully compromised yet. Glasses reminds us all of how wonderful technology is because of it allows innovation, but how it is also a dependency that can be crippling at times like this. But Mer is worried that the power could leave her patient in a compromising position, so she contemplates switching to a more invasive procedure to reduce complications if the technology crashes or if she should just continue and try to be as efficient as possible (she chooses the latter).

Carina is awarded OB privileges so that she can help given the hospital is currently understaffed and under cyber attack. Arizona and Carina arrive to the pit for a patient who decided that delivering her baby at home was no longer a satisfying option. She’d prefer to have an epidural and be attached to all machines available (which could be problematic). Carina expresses her excitement over her first patient at Grey Sloan, to which the mother becomes panicked.

Everyone is in line for the only working CT machine, and Owen tries to convey his authority so that he can be pumped up to the front. Karev defends his patient and Owen backs down! Bailey and Webber talk to the FBI and try to figure out a solution. They recall how another hospital handled a similar situation, where they said they defeated them, but off the record the other hospital had paid the ransom. When Webber offers to pay the ransom, seeing how it was only around 5,000 bitcoin, it turns out the conversion is equivalent to 20 million dollars. A fee that he, nor most people can afford. Then Bailey realizes that the surgical contest drew so much attention to Grey Sloan, that hackers figured that the hospital could afford a hefty ransom. Bailey recruits Avery to help since he has the funds to pay the ransom, while still maintaining her promise of keeping the donor of the competition anonymous. He gives her the go ahead, but the FBI official stops her in her tracks. He warns her of the global consequences involved if the hospital pays that amount of money. If they hackers get the money, then they would be motivated to go after every hospital endangering millions of lives. Jackson backs Bailey 100 percent and tells her to give him a call whenever she needs him. Bailey offers to give the FBI a little more time.

Jackson and Maggie decide to transfer their patient. Carina enlists Arizona for her motherly touch and expertise with the expectant mother. Webber informs Kepner, who needs a CT for her patient, that the line is backed up and it will be at least an hour wait. Pressed for time, she stresses for options when Webber suggests an old school trick. On request of a newspaper, the millennial teenagers offer up the newspaper app, but Kepner comes to the rescue as she grabs a real newspaper. He shows them that if you can read the newspaper through the pink tinted IV bag, then the bleeding in the abdomen has not reached critical levels and that the patient should be okay for now.

Jolex’s patient is stable and his CT was clear, so they reassure his mom. Amelia reveals to Alex that in fact he’s likely to have another stroke in the next 24 hours. Jo comes running with their patients night nurse that she’s tracked down, who should know if he received vitamin K the previous night. Unfortunately, he’s not the right nurse, but Jo quickly finds out that whoever the one that night/early morning, was there when Doc McStuffins was on. They figure out who the nurse was, but now are tasked with finding her, even though they have no means of contacting her. They need to know if the patient was given vitamin K or not because that will determine what medication he gets, and if they don’t give him the right medication he could have a severe stroke.

Webber is in his glory, schooling everyone on how it was done back when there was limited technology. He helps Deluca place a patient in trendelenburg position to help slow down his breathing and heart rate. As Owen finally gets to CT, the hospital loses power. Mer is forced to switch to the more invasive procedure and sends a very nervous Glasses to get more blood.

Jackson and Maggie are set to transfer their patient. Jackson opens up to Maggie while they ride the elevator and they find out that they used to go to the same pool growing up in Boston.

Jo interrogates the nurse in an attempt to help her patient, but is being slightly brushed off. Glasses cannot access the blood bank, since the codes/basically-anything-automated is still under attack. Jo finally gets the information she needs and sprints to find the nurse. Jolex’s patient is getting sicker, he literally feels like he’s gonna die. Arizona and Carina’s patient is on the (slow) waddle. But it turns out she’s crowning. Now her patient is extremely scared, but Arizona gives her the best/realest pep talk. Then with her newfound strength, she literally delivers her baby standing up in the hallway leaning on a gurney. Carina feels she’s screwed up with her first patient at Grey Sloan, but Arizona comforts her. Carina then admits that she misses her and Arizona feels the same way! Turns out Carina is super casual with Owen, which opens up the doors for her and Arizona. Speeding past them during their nice moment, Jo sprints to find her patients nurse.

Amelia and Karev are faced with the tough decision, whether or not to give him a blood thinner, even if they don’t know for certain if he had his vitamin K. Mer is furious with Glasses for not receiving the blood. Mer comes up with a solution to her blood shortage, she hooks up Glasses to an IV and does a direct donation to her patient. On the helicopter, Jackson and Maggie subtly show how they feel about each other until they hit terrible turbulence. He grabs her hand to show his support and they start to scratch the surface of their feeling when: their patients LVAD flies loose and BLOOD BEGINS TO SPURT OUT EVERYWHERE. Jackson was the brave soul to fix it. Owen tells Bailey that they need to start evacuating patients, when Bailey puts her medical career and license on the line defending her hospital and patients to the FBI officer. She contacts Jackson to pay the ransom, but his phone is stuck in the blood on the plane and he’s distracted in his efforts to comfort Maggie. Jo finally finds the right nurse, who warns them not to give her patient heparin. She sprints to tell Alex, but he’s already beginning to inject him (with what is presumed to be heparin)!! The screen then jumps back to Jo in the elevator trying to call Alex, but the call won’t go through. (Let the record show that it’s at this point that I started to scream at my tv. Why you might ask, well because she has her back turned to the elevator doors, there’s less than a minute left and I know that something terrible always happens in elevators. Not to mention cliffhangers thrive in the the last minute of a mid-season finale. I knew the devil would emerge, and boy was I mad to be right!) As she turns around after texting Alex “NO HEPARIN,” she looks up to the sound of Paul saying, “Hey Brooke, oh wait it, it’s Jo now right?” We then see Jo in a haze as she’s met face to face with her abusive sickly smiling husband, followed by the black and write Grey’s Anatomy end title.

A Few Additional Thoughts:

I’M SHAKEN! I cannot believe it! I’m in shock, even though I knew he would reappear and that it makes total sense for him to return just as we must break. I can’t even imagine what she must feel like. While I’m looking forward to the way in which they tell this story and it’s importance, I’m just so heartbroken that she must relive her past. I hope everything works out well for her. I truly believe that the mid-season premiere is going to be a Jo centric episode. I think they are going to dive into her past and shed some light on the PTSD that can be accompanied with domestic abuse. I also think it's going to reflect on her time with Alex and the life she’s built for herself. I’m excited to learn more about her character and interested to see how Alex is there for her.

This episode was bananas! I mean are they going to pay the ransom? Will the hackers back down? Will Bailey be able to wire the money? Will Alex get Jo’s text in time? Will they be able to reverse the medication if they end up giving it? Will their patient die? What will Jo say? What will Paul say? Is Jo in immediate danger? What’s in store for her? What will Alex do when he finds out? How will he find out? Will Mer’s patient live? Will Glasses’ blood be enough to sustain the women through her surgery? Will Jackson and Maggie’s patient live given the sufficient blood loss? Why didn’t Maggie stop screaming as all the blood was spurting (I know she was terrified, but don’t scream when all that blood is spurting girl!)? What’s in store for their relationship? SO MANY QUESTIONS AND SO MUCH TIME UNTIL JAN 18!

But we Grey’s Anatomy fans are built for this!

Grey’s Anatomy 300th!

300! Our beloved show has lasted the test of time and is still a dominant force to be reckoned with. Over the last 14 seasons we’ve seen heartbreak, love, passion, miracles, and tragedies. We’ve lost characters we’ve adored and gained ones that we love so dearly. Being a part of the Grey’s Anatomy fandom is certainly a lifestyle. Sure we’ve had our ups and downs, but we persist and continue to watch week after week, year after year. Shonda Rhimes, the Queen of Television, has made us laugh, cry, and made the Grey’s Anatomy fandom a family. She managed, along with her magnificent cast, crew, writers, and producers to tell stories that have helped shape us into the people we are today. This show is lead by an ensemble of powerful women, who inspire millions of girls and women of all ages with each performance. So many of our friends have chosen to become doctors because they were inspired by the characters that are so dear to our hearts. These characters have motivated their fans not only to pursue medicine, but also to pursue other marvelous occupations. While the story lines at times can feel far fetched (the amount of incidents relating to airplanes), at its core the show encapsulates realness. No matter how crazy the characters lives can be, they are always supported by their loved ones and in the end love wins out. Even in tragedy and in heartbreak, the characters continue to choose love and continue to grow. This show proves again and again that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

The 300th episode was truly magical for me and I’m sure for you as well. Each character (current and past) was recognized for their role in the series. We finally see Meredith receive a Harper Avery as her mother looks down at her with joy and pride. We see Jackson deliver a beautiful speech that honors the fallen. We get a glimpse of the past through the real life doppelgangers. And we are reminded why this show has lived on for so long. So cheers to Season 14 and hopefully more! Congrats Grey’s Anatomy on 300th! And shout out to Krista Vernoff for writing this masterpiece!

Synopsis:

*Warning this episode is extremely nostalgic and it is advised that you have your tissues ready*

The episode dives right into your feels as it opens with Mer on the beloved Seattle Ferryboat, yes that's right the boat that was once on Derek’s scrub cap -now housed by Mer- and the same boat that takes you to where the fantastical dream house was built. Accompanying her is Alex, as they descend back to the hospital. It is presumed that she went to see Derek and tell him about her prestigious Harper Avery nomination, when Alex asks, “How was it, was he happy for you?” To which she replied with a smile “No, he was jealous,” reminding us of their extremely competitive, yet ever motivating relationship.

Meanwhile Amelia walks in on Carina and Owen cooking naked… Amelia and Owen try to cover the awkward moment, but just ends in Amelia stealing some French toast while leaving hastily. Then we jump to Bailey as she’s walking to work with Ben driving alongside her trying to convince her to join him. She found out about the fire academy and to say she’s displeased would be an understatement. Arizona is painting every possible color on Sophia’s room, as she anxiously awaits her daughter’s arrival.

Another note of nostalgia as we see the new interns in the historic hallway (aka the tunnels) with the excess hospital beds. We are reminded of our favorite sleep deprived interns, the originals who grew up in those halls to be the doctors they are today. Mer is hesitant to leave for Boston where the Harper Avery Awards will take place. Alex tries to convince her, but is unsuccessful when a incoming trauma comes in. Deluca is still avoiding his ex, Sam.

The medical trauma this week: a rollercoaster ride gone awry! The first patient, who saved a bunch of children, is under the care of Owen and Amelia. Webber briefs Mer and Alex on the two patients who were transferred in the rollercoaster cart in which they crashed, for it would’ve been to life threatening to remove prior to their arrival at Grey Sloan. But wait, don’t they look familiar…. OMG they are the George and Cristina doppelgangers… but wait their friend just stepped out of the ambulance to check on them and… she is Izzie’s pregnant doppelganger. What.. what… and on que, the original theme song begins to play. Boy are we in for a treat.

Jackson tries to convince Mer to get moving, but she’s not leaving the trauma. Also it turns out the doppelgangers are doctors, they interning at Seattle Press! Bailey sends Ben to the Clinic as a punishment. Jackson checks in on Bailey to see where she is on the contest, but is quickly swerved when she confronts him about her husband’s career change and whether he happened to know about it when he had given her the money. Then we get a major throwback as we see Owen push Amelia back when he tells her that the hero doesn’t need a CT, but instead must be rushed to surgery. I’m sure this triggers you, just as well as me, back to that same decision that ultimately killed Derek. When we recall the tragedy of Derek’s death we reflect on a simple diagnosis that can be captured by quick CT and then fixed by an immediate surgery. Unfortunately, if this bleed is not seen right away, the patient will be gone, even if the rest of their body is healed by other surgeries. Alex is in shock at seeing Izzie, as Jo walks up for advice. He tells Jo that since she’s always wondered what she was like and surprised, Jo describes her as pretty and perky. Then Izzie comes up to them to check in on her friends, when he’s at a loss for words and Jo just watches him struggle in the most comical way. Izzie begins to lose her balance, and Alex swoops in to catch her. Another major tbt to when he carried Izzie after Denny’s heart wrenching death.

The intensity rises as baby George is unable to breathe when they remove part of the car seat. No worries, Webber has the fix, Mer must hold traction on his head. They are confused why everyone continues to stare at them and Mer fesses up, she tells them it's because they remind everyone of George and Cristina. To which baby Cristina freaks out and yells at them not to stare.

Little Izzie has an ultra sound done, and finds out that her baby has a tumor on it’s placenta. She must have surgery to get it removed, as it is very dangerous. Fearful, Izzie grabs Alex’s hand and Jo address the weirdness of the situation, but at the same time understands. Mer is still holding traction and Jackson comes by to help. When baby Cristina realizes who the both of them are, her tune changes and she relates them to surgical royalty. Katherine and Jackson nearly convinced Mer to go to the awards, when after they transported baby George, baby Cristina’s stats started to plummet. She then tells Jackson to go in her place.

April makes her own attempt to convince Mer to go, but baby Cristina begs her not to. She claims Mer to be her idol and asks of her to think of her best friend (the real Cristina) and to save her like she would her best friend, to fight for her with the same vigor. Pulling at all of are heartstrings and nearly bringing Mer to tears. Jackson announces that Mer’s not going, so Maggie and Zola stay behind as the Avery’s depart. Amelia rushes to the OR with a portable CT when she finds out that Owen had ignored her order. He accuses her of being upset about his encounter with Carina, you know the one she walked in on. But she proves him wrong when the CT discovers a brain bleed (an expanding epidural hematoma to be exact) in which she must operate immediately. After gloating a bit to Owen, he then apologizes for doubting her. She explains that he was partially right, in that she was thinking of Derek and that in doing so he saved a man’s life today.

Webber and Bailey check in on baby George who blames himself for endangering his friends, when all he wanted was to have a little fun outside of working. His self- deprecating, selflessness, and innocence, triggers Bailey to recall the real George, a man who helped deliver her baby, who was really a part of her family, and whose death she mourned daily for over a year after the tragic incident occurred. Interestingly enough, when Webber goes to comfort her, he finds out that the tears are from her anger with Ben. Unfortunately their moment was interrupted by the sounds of banging in the skills lab (notice the accidental word play hahaha), to which Sam, followed by Deluca exited. Deluca consults his sister about his recent love affair with Sam, one that she’s seen the end result time and again.

April is angry with Mer for taking her Harper Avery nomination for granted, and inadvertently expresses her jealousy. She feels inferior, but Mer reminds her that she is not average, that she is incredible and ultimately she should give herself more credit. And she also expresses how deeply she does want the award. Arizona, Jo, and Alex must perform an emergency c-section on Izzie, because the baby is in distress. Arizona remembers Mark in comforting Izzie. She remembers his calmness, his charm, and his kindness. In this beautiful moment, she delivers the baby and also comforts herself as she prepares for her daughter's arrival, he reminds her of her strength, and instills confidence in her to be a fulltime mom again.

In one of my absolute favorite scenes of the episode, to which I cried a little if we’re being honest, Zola proves that she is wise beyond her years. She tells Maggie that she’s going be a brain surgeon like her father, before admitting that she missed her dad and then asked Maggie if she missed her mom. When Maggie answers with an almost tearful yea, Zola then recounts what she believes her mama would say: “Even though your mom’s not here, she’s always with you.” To end this beautiful moment she offers her aunty a hug.

Webber and Bailey save baby George, but not without wishing they had been able to do the same for the real George. Izzie’s baby is okay! Alex lets her hold baby Jasper for just a few minutes before he must take him to the NICU, but in this moment we see Arizona and Karev marvel in their past memories.

Bailey is scared of Ben’s commitment issues. But he explains that he just wants to try this while he is still young and able, he doesn’t want to live his life with regrets. Before they are able to finish their conversation, Webber grabs Bailey since Jackson is on the phone.

Another tear jerker. Jo tells Alex to call Izzie to get closure and see how she’s doing. Instead he tells her the story that she’s made up for her in his mind, one that is intricate, personal, and a bit of a nod at how Katherine Heigl is actually living, a tale in which she’s extremely happy. He tells her that he doesn’t need to call her because he doesn’t want to ruin it and he feels that “she’s as happy as I am with you.” Then they lean back in silence, just so happily in love and mature enough, grown enough, comfortable enough to acknowledge their past and embrace it, as it poses no threat to their future (that is his ex doesn’t, her ex poses a detrimental threat to their happiness, but I digress, let us be happy in this moment).

You know what, don’t even bother putting your tissues away. After Mer and April’s surgery, Bailey and Webber bring the Harper Avery awards to her as they project the show on the TV in the OR. All of the doctors along with Zola watch from the gallery as Catherine Avery announces that Meredith Grey has WON THE HARPER AVERY. Jackson gives the most heartwarming, eloquent, and masterful speech about Mer’s dedication to surgery, to her patients, and that despite her personal tragedies, she’s remained a gracefully innovative person/surgeon. He also pays tribute to her fallen sister, Lexie, who was one of my absolute favorite characters. As Mer along with all the doctors marvel in the moment, they pan the camera to the gallery where we see Mer looking up to a familiar face. Her mother applauds her with the proudest of smiles and we see the joy on Mer’s face in knowing that her mother is indeed looking down on her extraordinary daughter.

Back at Arizona’s house, we see little Sophia as she arrives back home. She expresses how much she misses her mama and Arizona admits that she does too (a nod to Callie who is happy in NYC). As Arizona comforts her daughter with ice cream, there’s a close up of the first family photo of Mark, Arizona, Callie, and Sophia, the one that was taken so many seasons ago, paying homage to the fallen and the departed.

Things get steamy back at the hospital as Deluca and Sam hook up in the infamous on call room. Mer shows Owen baby Cristina, but he denies their similarities, to which she mentions Burke (saying that she should ask him if they look alike), thus another tribute to departed. He also reminds her that no one is like Cristina, true that Owen!

Mer and Alex kick the interns outta the tunnels as they celebrate together Mer’s epic and well deserved win. Cristina then facetimes in as they all enjoy champagne.

A Few Additional Thoughts:

First of all, this episode was incredible and had a lot of nods to the epicness of Grey’s Anatomy’s 300 episodes! Kudos to the entire cast, crew, and writers on the incredible work they’ve done. This episode was truly special and definitely worth the watch. My praises are endless and thus I’ve decided to dedicate a whole other post to commemorate 300 episodes of Greys and the impact it’s had. So for more info, check out our next post!

Synopsis: The episode opens with Amelia sneaking into her and Owen’s house to look over her notes from med school. She’s nervous about her first day back and finds herself wondering when the symptoms began. As her and Owen talk about tumor that both brought them together and tore them apart, they mutually decide to blame the tumor for all the bad and accredit their happy memories together to their love for each other. This brings them closer together and they decide to remain friends, and not just fake divorced people friends, like real friends who they can rely on for honesty and support. *Side note I am so proud of their growth and their maturity in handling their separation and divorce. I just hope that they can truly remain friends!*

Mer is on the cover of JSA (a medical journal) for Megan’s groundbreaking surgery and everyone is talking about it as she, along with Maggie, and Amelia enter the hospital. Also on the minds of all the doctors is the Intern mixer, where we will finally meet the newest batch of Grey’s Anatomy doctors! Meanwhile, Tom,Amelia’s cocky mento, is leaving Seattle as Amelia gains back her surgical reign. Alex is absolutely adorable when he first compliments Mer on her cover story, and tells her to be nice to Jo since she opted out of being included in the story as it could draw the attention of her abusive ex-husband. He emphasizes that she be really nice and not Mer nice to Jo -which if you know her and Jo’s relationship you know that she hasn’t always been the kindest to Jo. Jo ends up being on Mer’s service and Mer keeps her promise to be extra kind to Jo. They’re patient is a lawyer who’s getting a liver dissection and diversion procedure (also known as an alps procedure).

After constant teasing from Karev about how to spend his extreme inheritance, Jackson buys a yacht, which influences all the boys to take a sick day. Amelia’s first patient back is a mother with three kids who needs a brain tumor removed and after meeting the family she begins to have doubts about her readiness to return to the OR. Arizona accidentally broke up with Carina when she needed space as she prepares for her daughter’s homecoming. Thus we see Maggie, April, and Arizona all tindering together, yet all looking for very different things. Bailey catches them and begins to tinder on Maggie’s behalf given she’s no longer on the market and wants to have some fun. By the way, Avery also bought a sick new car.

Amelia literally runs to catch Tom from leaving by standing in front of his car, she needs reassurance and asks that he stay to assist in surgery. A teen shows up to the hospital with intense stomach pain, just as a frequent flier hypochondriac shows up. As they are examining her, a gun goes off, through the womans body, grazing April’s arm, and into the femoral artery of the hypochondriac. Turns out the gun was all up in her vajay, yup you read that right and it was loaded. She had apparently been trying to sneak the gun into her boyfriend’s prison.

The boys are on Jackson’s SWEET yacht. But of course none of them know how to drive it and no he didn’t have a name for it either. Back at the hospital, Jo explains the surgery to Mer and asks for advice on how to better prepare for the surgery, but Mer only compliments her. This leaves Jo confused and when Webber stops in to tell Jo she’s in the running for Chief Resident she thinks that either Mer. Alex, or Warren are behind it. She believes that they have all gone to Webber about her past and that they are treating her like a victim. He then reminds her that this is a good thing and that she’s doing a suburb job, and that he’s unaware of whatever she’s talking about. Amelia decides to take an overly cautious approach to the surgery because she’s scared. Back on the boat, Karev wonders “what yacht people eat.” They then compete to see who can tie the best surgeons knot. The lawyer is contemplating signing the consent papers and asks the doctors for advice. Mer reminds him that it is unethical for them to influence his decision. But Jo breaks the rules and encourages him to sign it (a symbol of how she feels about her ex husband). She says to sign it because she wouldn’t want to wonder what could’ve been. Later, Mer goes back in to check on him and make she it’s truly what he wanted to do. He tells her that while Jo said he should do it, that’s not the reason he said yes. Rather it’s why she said to do it that reminded him of his deceased wife. He would’ve given anything for his wife to have a chance of surviving and that if she’s been alive today he wouldn’t been in the position he’s in because she would’ve made him go to his check ups. So he’s doing it for his wife.

Competitions continue back at the boat for who can filet the best fish. Meanwhile, Mer is in surgery with Jo, when Jo asks why she hasn’t been yelled at her interaction with the lawyer. But Mer just brushes it off by saying that since she knows it’s wrong, there’s no reason to discuss it. Amelia pages Webber for an emergency AA meeting because she felt that the drugs and alcohol defined her, in the same way the that tumor made her brave and fearless. And she fears that was extracted along with the tumor. But the father figure tells her the problem is gone and that the recovery is the same of that of an addict, it’s one day at a time.

As Bailey and Maggie operate on the hypochondriac patient together, Bailey points out how the man overcomplicates and overthinks his life by constantly thinking something is medically wrong. This leads Maggie to have a revelation: she over thinks and overcomplicates her own life. She then decides to make the date with the tinder guy because she’s tired of overthinking things. Amen sister, aren’t we all? Bailey mom’s her (that’s right I made mom into a verb, try and stop me!) which is so cute and tells her how to date safely (public place, friends know where you are, important!!).

Across the hospital, April is appalled at how someone can settle so low for someone else (as in sticking a gun up your vajayjay for your boyfriend at 18 years old). Webber and Carina share war stories of things they’ve taken out of people as they watch Arizona and April in surgery. The gun is outta her vajayjay! Amelia is in surgery with Tom and she freaks out when there’s a bleed, but then handles it like a pro, saves the girl, and removes the tumor. Finally proving to herself that she can do it.

Mer continues to compliment Jo, until Jo asks her to stop it because it’s creeping her out. She then explains that she took her name off the paper to protect herself. Mer finally explains that she knows she’s in a horrible situation and that she is a survivor. She then admits that Alex was the one who asked her to be nice to her and that Jo’s on her service because she’s good, not because he asked her to. She also adds that it doesn’t matter about published papers what matters is what happens in surgery, the works she does, and who she is. And that Alex does things like that like for people he loves.

On the boat, Jackson talks about how he has a sister… and the guys tell him that Maggie’s not his sister and when he subtly asks about sleeping with her, they all look at him sideways. He then quickly avoids the topic. April and Arizona get real with the teen about how she needs to get it together. They try to convey her to be brave enough to say no to her bf.

Mer and Jo check on the lawyer after his surgery and he’s doing well. After Mer leaves the room to grab the lawyers assistance, Jo takes the opportunity to ask legal advice. He tells her that their isn’t much she can do to prevent him from finding her or where she lives if she files for divorce. He says most women are willing to take the risk.

The hypochondriac says he will never come back -a win for Bailey. The boys are all relaxed after their day of rigorous competitions, when Owen invites Deluca to stay with him. Ben then admits that he applied and got into the fire academy, but hasn’t told Bailey (good luck Ben!). Bailey and Webber email for the mixer, causing the boys to run in an attempt to get there on time (another competition). Maggie awakes her tinder date, sees him and ducks under the cover. Webber makes a toast at the mixer, as all the boys show up in the middle drunk, which is comical to say the least. Tom tells Amelia that she’s better then him and then… she sleeps with him. Yup this episode was full of surprises. Owen and Carina meet...with sparks flying. Mer and Jo get paged, the lawyer is in vfib. He dies. MER IS NOMINATED FOR A HARPER AVERY!! But she’s preoccupied with her patient’s death. Jackson asks Bailey to create a competition similar to the Harper Avery, in which they fund innovation and award greatness. In this he grants her total control and will give her half of his inheritance to fund it!! with half of her money. He wants to get back in the game and have the opportunity to win an award (his day of competitions proved inspirational). Deluca and Arizona both see Owen and Carina making out…like I said sparks were flying.

Jo talks to Alex. First she informs him that she’s in the running for chief resident!!! An then she explains how she appreciates all he’s done to protect her, but she feels she’s ready to fight her own battles. She’s decided to file for divorce from Paul. This is a huge step and I’m so proud of her!

Deluca runs into a girl from his past.. but who is she? Mer continues her research on the alps procedure with Bailey.

A Few Additional Thoughts:

I LOVED THIS EPISODE. It was funny, charming, sad, strong, bold, interesting, bizarre, and powerful. It was so wonderful to see the characters happy, and let loose after the traumas of the last few seasons. This episode was so light, yet it still held a weight. I’m so proud of Jo for deciding to file divorce papers. While it makes me fearful of what is to come, I’m glad she’s got Alex to support her and am in awe of her bravery.

Congrats to Meredith! A Harper Avery is HUGE! She deserves it.. let’s just hope she wins it! Next week is the 300th episode, so you know it’s gonna be amazing! Can’t wait!!

Synopsis:

The episode opens with a flashback of Owen in Iraq. Here we see the familiar faces of Teddy and Megan as they judge Owen’s relationship with Beth (a past girlfriend). Then Amelia wakes him back to the reality of being back in Seattle, where we see him saying goodbye to Megan as she’s leaving for Los Angeles.

In LA: Farouk and Riggs are at their new home setting up everything before Megan’s arrival.

In Iraq: Megan goes to get Riggs by scaring him awake. They had previously been fighting but that over now and she begins to open up to him about how nervous she is about the Strat rankings (she needs to be ranked number one in order to be a flight surgeon). As she’s moving about she finds a necklace, in which Riggs then proposes to her with. They meet up with Teddy and Owen to fly out on the chopper.

In Seattle: Owen’s trying to convince Megan to stay, but she’s determined to leave. In Iraq: They reveal the strat ranked number one, but it’s not Megan. Then they get a major call and are forced to refocus their energy on the incoming soldiers/civilians/patients.

In Seattle, Owen decides to go with Megan as she drives to LA.

In Iraq, Megan is mad that she didn’t rank number one and is convinced that Owen didn’t recommend her. But before they can continue their fight, Megan must go help a woman who doesn’t want to be touched by man. Across the tent, Teddy is working on the gunman, and asks Riggs to scrub in with her.

In LA: Riggs and Farouk are working on the house together, when Farouk begins to get overwhelmed by all of the new changes headed his way.

In Iraq, Teddy confronts Nathan about the necklace engagement and about who the necklace really belongs to... Turns out it’s the women he cheated on Megan with’s necklace and it’s engraved… whoops.

On the road: Megan and Owen take a short stop at the old fair grounds they hung out at as kids.

In Iraq: Megan is still treating the women who took down the shooter by giving her a chest tube. Megan is still infuriated with Owen, and blames him for her dream being crushed. Teddy and Rigga are also still working together and Teddy is furious.

In LA: Riggs is on the phone setting up job interviews, when Faruk wants to help by putting his fan together.

On The Road: Megan and Owen are making bets and having fun by playing ring toss, but things turn bitter when he bets that if he wins she must stay in seattle (and he wins). She begins to storm away, but stops to tell him that she’s still angry about being the Strat ranks.

In Iraq: Owen and Megan are working on a patient together, when he says something that leads her to believe that he in fact didn’t recommend her as the number one Strat. Given he said that she “dodged a bullet” and when she asked if he recommended her their patient began to crash (forcing them change topics).

In LA: Riggs just ends a call with Megan when he goes to tell Farouk that she’s gonna be late, but he can’t find him anywhere!!!

In Iraq: Owen and Megan are arguing about the best treatment plan, when she decides to take matters into her own hands.

In LA: Riggs finally finds Farouk. He was by a food truck on the beach, where he wanted to help by grabbing them dinner but became consumed by the choices. (Something he had never experienced before).

In Iraq: Riggs tell Teddy that he regrets cheating, but she had no remorse for him. Meanwhile, Owen is angry with Megan for going against his treatment plan, but she proves him wrong by saving both the guy’s arm and his life.

On The Road: Owen and Megan are still arguing. She tells him that she had everything planned out and that he ruined it. Finally, he admits that he did tank her recommendation because he thought she was childish and would’ve died if she’d made special forces. But really what it all comes down to is that he was too scared to let her go, which is no excuse to hold her back from her dreams. And he goes even further to say that he would do it again. In an attempt to hurt him back she admits that his nickname in Iraq, diamond, was created because he was so uptight and that she was the one who came up with it.

In LA: Riggs comforts Farouk by telling him that while change is scary, it’s also a really good thing. He goes even further to say that it’s okay not to know all the answers and that together they’ll make it through.

In Iraq: Teddy tells Riggs that he’s gotta tell Megan the truth. He admits to being scared of losing her, but she points out that in order for them to have a change, that he must tell her.

On The Road: Owen finally admits that he was wrong, but ruins it by continuing to push her to stay in Seattle. She gets so fed up that she chooses to kick him outta the car.

In Iraq: Megan refuses to go with Owen in the helicopter because she’s still mad at him. And Owen is angry that she won’t go and that she’s so mad about the strat. He thinks she should focus on her engagement and be happy, totally missing the point that that’s not her dream. Teddy snaps and yells at him for not embracing his sister’s dream and how he just crushed it. (She also brings up how difficult it is to watch someone else live your dream, one that you would be willing to give anything for, hinting that she’s in love with him and that he’s oblivious, or as she says an idiot). Owen leaves anyway.

On The Road: Owen says he’s not leaving her again (finally he’s beginning to show his true intentions). Megan can’t stand that he keeps trying to make decisions for her and how judgmental he’s been about Riggs for cheating (and her for staying with him). She just wants to be happy and live her life and appreciate it all after everything she's been through. She also throws back in his face the fact that he cheated on Christina and that he shouldn’t be so judgmental. But then she finally tells him the truth, that she cheated on Nathan first.

In Iraq: Riggs confronts Megan only to find out that she cheated first. Then he admits that he cheated too. She gets so angry and humiliated, but doesn’t have the time to sort things out with him because she’s called to treat her patient (with the chest tube). Megan tells Owen that she needs the helicopter for the female patient and wants to ride along even though it's against protocol, he is hesitant at first, but when she tells him that Riggs cheated on her he says yes right away. Across the tent, Teddy talks to a soldier, and finds out that the woman who is about to be transferred was in fact the shooter, not the man they originally thought! But it's too late Megan is on the helicopter with her and they’ve already taken off. And that’s the last we see of flashbacks and of Megan before she’s kidnapped.

On The Road: Owen is shocked that Riggs tell him that Megan had cheated first. Megan changes the tone, when she recalls a cherished family memory. She recounts a story from when they were growing up and how that experience got her through each day while she was kidnapped. She explains how much she loved the water (it heals her). She promised herself that she made it out alive, that she would live in California by the water. Owen admits that he’s always dreamed of raising their families together, and she tells him that he’s so loyal (almost to a fault) and that he needs to break up with some of his ideas in order to be happy.

In LA: Riggs and Farouk are laying on the mattress set up in the living room, with Faruk asleep on Riggs when he texts Meredith thank you. She receives this message in a similar position with Zola, and texts back the same, just as Megan makes it home. Megan is finally happy and they are finally a family. Owen makes it back home where he calls a quits on his marriage with Amelia because he wants them both to be happy. And they mutually decide to end it and in a somber moment they give their rings back to each other. Across the way, Megan finally gets to be in the ocean and has her dream life. And Owen is finally at peace.

A Few Additional Thoughts:

I think that this episode is important for a variety of reasons. I love how it sheds light on our troops and how their service lives on with them forever. Also thank you to Grey’s Anatomy and ABC for broadcasting a PSA about the overwhelming number of homeless veterans and the way in which we can help them. Thank you to all of the men and women who dedicate their lives to service!

It was interesting to see how maturely Owen and Amelia handled their separation. They both new what they had wasn’t working, as much as they were great together, things change. They’d grown apart and as Amelia said, she was a completely different person given her brain tumor. I hope this gives her time to figure out who she is outside of her tumor and outside of a relationship. I also think that now that Megan is safe, Owen can finally be at ease and that this will allow him to finally heal. He could benefit from taking some time to get to know himself and maybe start exploring a new life with Teddy. I see a lot of growth in their futures.

I’m so happy that Megan, Riggs, and Farouk are happy. Now she can finally be at peace and heal alongside the ocean as she’s dreamed about for so long. It’s so beautiful to see how her story played out and that she gets the happy ending she deserves. We’ll miss them!

I would also like to point out how cool it was for Riggs to thank Meredith. They really both played a major role in each other’s lives. Riggs helped Meredith realize that she has the capability of loving again, even if she’s already had the great love of her life. And Riggs was able to open up to someone and heal and finally be with his love of his life Megan. Ultimately, they both helped each other heal.

Synopsis:

This week’s episode opens with Amelia shaving a part of her head for her brain surgery with both her sisters (Maggie & Mer) by her side. Mer is told not to tell Amelia’s mother because she felt that if her mom can’t show up to her wedding, why should she come to her surgery?

At Bailey and Warren’s home, Bailey is caught off guard when she wakes up to an empty bed. He’s been secretly working out (in case you missed it, he’s been casted in the new Grey’s Anatomy Spinoff about firefighters in Seattle, so while the audience knows he’s training to be somehow involved in the firefighting/EMS world, his wife doesn’t. But rest at ease Ben fans, he’s still slated to be a series regular).

Amelia’s mentor and surgeon (you know, the really arrogant one?) tells Bailey, Webber, Alex, Maggie, Mer, Amelia, and Owen his surgical plan. He answers all of their questions and concerns. Amelia gets real with her family and gives them all instructions: Deluca is supposed to question the surgeon to keep him focused, Mer is only to call Amelia’s mom if she dies, Maggie should take her room, Owen should move on if she dies or if she’s in need of around-the-clock care, and names April her power of attorney because she’s both sweet and smart to hold out some hope, but not too emotionally attached to let her go. After closing up some loose ends, she tells them how much she loves them. Once in the OR, this beautiful moment happens where the entire surgical team joins Amelia in standing in the superwoman pose. The pose is not only symbolic, there are studies that show that it increases your confidence and helps you perform better. The voice over emphasizes the fears associated with surgery. While you worry about not waking up from a normal surgery, when it comes to brain surgery you fear waking up and no longer being yourself, physically, mentally, or emotionally.

Bailey and Webber interview interns, and while some were amazing, the others were just straight up comical.

Mer goes to check in on Megan and unfortunately she has a fever. Mer then goes to watch Amelia’s surgery, in which the surgeon is playing the Beach Boys. Deluca tries to respect Amelia’s wishes and badgers Todd with questions. In the gallery, Mer vents to Maggie and Alex about Riggs, who left unexpectedly. Mer’s mad that he left Megan behind and Alex chimes in saying that he never liked him. Mer then puts his dating history into question and he says that his judgement has improved with age. <3 (Awwww!) Suddenly Todd stops singing along to the Beach Boys, garnering all of their attention, he’s forced to cut a vital line in the brain, which could either do nothing or be extremely detrimental...the screen goes dark.

She opens her eyes and begins answering all of their questions but... they can’t hear her. We then see that she’s still connected to a ventilator and can’t make any movements. NOOOOO! The only good thing is that her intellect remains intact. They’re all concerned that she’s not recovering properly.

Post Op Day 1: There’s no change, but wait.... she’s breathing over the intubation tube, they extubate her!

Catherine and Jackson return from Harper Avery’s service, and we find out that Todd goes way back with Catherine...possibly romantically. This doesn’t sit well with Webber. Maggie is a bit flirty with Jackson, who looks damnnnnn fine in his suit! I mean can you blame her for complimenting him? I don’t... but anyway, Mer then asks Jackson if she can take his name off of Megan’s innovative surgery because she wants to be considered for a Harper Avery. While he’s disappointed, he understands and gives her the go ahead.

Deluca was in the middle of fulfilling another promise he made to Amelia (perform her post surgery protocol, to get neuro patients up and moving post op as soon as possible) when Todd walks in and reprimands him. Deluca doesn’t back down and reminds him that Amelia has a higher recovery rate. Throughout all of this we can hear Amelia’s pleading thoughts, she’s in so much pain that she doesn’t want to continue doing her protocol, but since she’s a prisoner to her own body, she’s forced to do it anyway.

Mer and Megan talk about Riggs, both of which told him to go back to the other (Mer told him firmly get back together with Megan and Megan told him to stay with Meredith). These mixed signals lead Megan to believe that they broke his brain. Unfortunately, she needs 3 days of antibiotics given her fever and low white blood cell count. When she tells Jo about the possible infection, Jo worries it could affect the study, and slyly asks if she’s mentioned in the article that could be considered for a Harper Avery. Mer reassures her that her name is going to in the article! Yay.. but Mer needs photos... and Jo’s a bit nervous (her husband is a doctor and this article could put her in danger).

Webber visits Amelia and brings up the possibility of giving her opioid painkillers to help with her recovery, but she shakes her head in tears.

Post Op Day 2: Arizona, Maggie, Alex, and Mer all joke about how they never noticed her tumor. They go even further and wish they had a scapegoat such as a tumor to blame their mistakes on. April is sickened by their jokes, but they explain that in situations this scary and unknown, they’ve got to have some comic relief. Then AMELIA STARTS SPEAKING!!! Well... she starts speaking in French. But hey I’ll take it! It’s progress! Thank goodness Maggie knows French and the two of them chat. Mer then recalls that all of the Shepherd's went to French preschools.

Across the hospital, Megan freaks out when she finds out that Farouk is sick. In an attempt to calm her down, Mer tells her about the time she kidnapped her own daughter in a rash decision and that it made things a lot worse. She also reminds her that she can’t help him if she dies.

April is struggling to adjust to her new normal of joint custody. Thank goodness for friends like Arizona, who comfort her by relating to her own experience and how it’s a hard adjustment, but it eventually gets easier. But April doesn’t want a new normal, and Arizona stays by her side.

Owen goes to check in on Amelia, and.... SHE STARTS SPEAKING ENGLISH AGAIN! AND SHE REMEMBERS THINGS! ...but she forgets Derek died. What could this mean?

Post Op Day 3: She remembers he’s dead, but she’s scared because her thoughts and memories are scattered. She’s fearful this means that she won’t be able to be a surgeon again. Interestly enough, the arrogant mentor Todd was actually nice and proves to her that she will recover and that her confusion is only temporary.

Mer, who has been avoiding Riggs’s calls for days, finally picks up the phone. It turns out he went to Baghdad to get Farouk and he needs her help. He’s trying to get him to the U.S. and needs her to prove that her new trial and treatment plan are essential and that Farouk qualifies for her treatment. She rushes to look up facts in order to give all of the right answers, but she won’t know if they approved him until 3:00pm the next day (he has a flight to Seattle that lands at 3:00pm and if they approve him, they will both be in Seattle by that time the next day).

Webber brings Maggie to his and Catherine’s house for a family dinner with Jackson and Catherine... which by the way their house is GORGEOUS. Catherine lays him out because she thought it would be a family dinner and Webber is insulted since Maggie is his family.. but turns out the real reason she wanted for it just to be the 3 of them is because she was going to tell Jackson about his inheritance... his 250 million dollar inheritance. Yup you read that right 250 MILLION DOLLARS, but NBD. Meanwhile Jackson and Maggie have awkward small talk in the other room, but they overhear them their parents arguing, and that my friends is how he finds out about his life changing inheritance. Yup through his mother angrily yelling it to his stepfather. During their awkward dinner, Jackson tells his mother that he doesn’t want the money, but would rather have a chance at winning the prestigious Harper Avery Award. Catherine yells at him for complaining about having too much money and tells him to consider what it would be like to not have enough. Maggie defends Jackson by acknowledging the problems and complexity of having so much, maybe even too much.

Post Op Day 4: Amelia is cleared to go home!! But she’s still looking for something and asks to see her scans for herself.

Jo tells Meredith to take her name of the article. When Meredith asks why, she reminds her of her husband. Mer feels awful, but agrees to take her name off of it. Ben overhears and is appalled that she would take her name off of something that could change her life, since it’s such an incredible opportunity. He asks her why she would do such a thing and she tells him honestly. She explains that her husband might find her and try to kill her and that she’s been in hiding. He laughs at first until he realizes that she’s not kidding. He was shocked (just like the rest of us were when we first found out!) but she asks him to tell her a secret since she feels so exposed and vulnerable. He tells her that he’s been training for something and that his wife doesn’t know and that she’s not going to be very happy about it.

Amelia continues to search for something even after seeing her clear scans and even asks for more scans with better imaging. Mer finally gets the text from Riggs to pick him up from the airport! YAY! But when she arrives at the airport they give her a really hard time. So Meredith schools the guard like a boss! She questions his medical abilities, given that it’s not his area of expertise and warns that this child will die if she doesn’t see and treat him right away. He then lets her right through.

WARNING: This next scene will probably make you cry tears of joy. Mer and Riggs surprise Megan back at the hospital when Farouk walks through the door. Their embrace is just beautiful and truly makes you wanna hugs your parents. She introduces him to his Uncle Owen (I mean how cute!) and Owen thanks him for taking care of his sister all of these years... please excuse me while I ball a little.

Deluca comforts Amelia by bringing her literal tumor in a jar to her and shows her that the something she’s been looking for is right there and that it’s gone. He explains to her that something was wrong for a very long time, but now she’s safe. The other shoe is not going to drop. There is nothing wrong anymore. While he feels he might’ve overstepped, she proves that false when she gives him a huge hug and starts crying.

Jackson goes to talk to Maggie and apologizes for the dinner being so uncomfortable. As a moment begins to happen between the two of them where you think something might take place, it’s quickly squashed by Catherine who compares their relationship to a brother-sister relationship. (I know every Japril fan is rejoicing right now!!!)

Owen goes to see Amelia as she’s packing to go home and asks that she come home! She tells him that she’s gonna go with Mer and that he was right to want to leave, and admits to being awful to him. She admits that she doesn’t even know who she is anymore. So she sets him free, but instead of running, he finally fights for her.

At home Bailey confronts Ben on his new found need for running, and he avoids going into too much detail by distracting her.... ;) Arizona’s daughter calls her while she’s with Carina and she tells her she wants to come back home! YAY!

A very somber moment back at the loft when Jo can’t sleep. Honestly I don’t know how to describe what she’s feeling, but I think her words speak volumes. Here she tells Alex how much she hates her husband for still having power over her and continuing to take things away from her. Alex tries to comfort her, but there is only so much he can truly do.

Megan’s temperature is going down! WOO HOO! She tells Mer that Riggs is still in love with her, but Mer explains that he’s trying and that she’s gotta give him a moment to readjust.

Amelia goes home with Owen! (YES OMELIA FANS!!)

A Few Additional Thoughts:

AMELIA IS ALIVE AND WELL! I’m so happy that she is recovering well and that she’s on the road to finding herself. I’m excited to see where her relationship with Owen goes for sure, but I’m way more excited to get to know the real Amelia. I mean it was really mature and took a lot of courage to let him go. She wanted him to be happy and wanted to set him free. But I’m happy he’s finally fighting for her. What does this mean though for him and Teddy? Will they stay friends? Regardless, I can’t wait to see Amelia’s journey of rediscovering herself and I just hope she can finally be happy (even if it’s without Owen). (Omelia fans don’t hate me..)

Megan and Farouk’s reunion was so beautiful. And bravo to Riggs for reuniting them. I really hope they try to work things out and that she gives him a chance!

WHAT IS JACKSON GONNA DO WITH ALL THAT MONEY? It’s going to be really interesting to see what he will do. I have faith that he’s going to do something extremely generous with it. Like maybe he’s live off of that money and do pro bono surgeries for the rest of his life. Maybe he’ll start a new foundation. Maybe he’ll just donate it all. Who knows. But I truly feel he’s gonna do something that’s spectacular and worthwhile.

And finally, it literally broke my heart when Jo had to give up receiving recognition for her role in the innovative and groundbreaking surgery. While I’m happy that in some ways she’s healing, given that she opened up to Warren, I’m so heartbroken by the things she’s forced to give up. She shouldn’t have to hide her success or limit her opportunities because of someone else, no one should and it devastates me. This season they are supposed to bring back her husband in some way, I just hope that she gets some resolution and feels safe again. While this is a scary and utterly sad story to tell, it’s an important one.

Synopsis:

This week's episode opens with Amelia reviewing her scans, Mer angrily/grumpily cleaning the house, frustrated that no one in the house is taking responsibility, and Bailey making sure the hospital is in tip top shape for the Harper Avery. Deluca wants Amelia to tell her family about the tumor and she shuts him down warning him not to violate HIPAA. We get the pleasure of seeing Alex run through Seattle... ahhh that man is FINEEEE!!! Everyone notices Grey’s new grumpy attitude (even Zola, who woah we actually get to see Mer’s kids this season, yay!)

Back at the hospital, Owen’s sister is healing faster than normal which is amazing, but is making Owen fearful that she’s going to leave soon. Mer is ignoring Nathan, but is glad to see a familiar face (but sadly not under the best circumstances, given he’s a patient) her old therapist Walter. He’s in the hospital due to a huge (nearly record breaking) clot, and all the interns want in on his surgery. Mer jokes that now he’s the one who “needs the tape and glue guy” (season 12 reference to when she was seeing him and just wanted someone to patch her up instead of unpack all of her baggage).

Arizona is in bliss with Carina, while April’s going through a lot at home. Jaggie has a moment where Maggie casually fixes his collar. Harper Avery arrives with everyone on edge and he’s a jerk. Meanwhile, Amelia’s arrogant mentor Tom arrives to remove her tumor, in which he tells her that “she hasn’t been of sound mind in years.” Great guy right? Wrong he’s horrible. Harper calls Jackson, Jackie (what? hope that nickname doesn’t stick) and is downright disrespectful to him.

Mer talks to Walt about her grumpy mood and they try to dissect the root of it. Amelia tells Webber about her tumor and Tom tells her that she’s not to work on any patients in her state. He also says she’s been a danger for years, since the tumor has been growing for over 10 years and has affected her impulses, moods, and planning. He even has the nerve to bring out Herman’s case, in which he faults her for her going blind.

Arizona has a pregnant patient who can’t have an epidural and assigns Warren to keep an eye on the patient because she’s a high risk case. Jolex has a steamy elevator scene!!!! Jolex was paged to a peds case where the kid’s hot air balloon for a hoco pro (homecoming proposal) went awry, and the balloon got burned onto his suit. But he’s dying to know if she said yes to his proposal.

Owen vents about Amelia to Megan when she’s had enough. She gives him some perspective when she tells him all she’s been through and how she’s feeling in comparison to his problems. Across the hospital Deluca tries to slyly tell Maggie about Amelia’s tumor through apologizing for the way things ended between them, but she totally misses the point and accepts his apology and thanks him for manning up. Mer continues to talk it out with Walt and explains how she’s been there for Riggs through everything with Megan, and he points out the love triangle. She says she’s done with them since she’s been a part of them all her life: her hubby (Derek, Mer, Addison), and raised in one (Ellis,Thatcher, Webber). He then asks her if Riggs is in love with her, and on cue he walks in... Maggie and Riggs present a risky new procedure to clear the clot and when they ask him to consult with his family over the major decision, we find out that he lost his wife 10 years ago, one son hates him and he hates the other.

Tom is surprised they didn’t see the signs related to Amelia’s tumor growth and she regrets calling him. April explains what a hoco pro is to Jo and Alex, when the girl Pete (the teen) shows up. They found his homemade sign in his pocket and ask for him, but the girl’s a bit skeptical. Webber tries to relate to Amelia by showing her his tumor from years back. Instead of getting comfort, she tells him that it's not a real tumor, that he is and he gets salty and walks away.

Mer is skeptical about the procedure for Walter and voices her concerns. After, she goes back to Walt and criticizes him for having similar problems. Carina recommends that Arizona’s patient seeks natural pain relief through sexual stimulation and Arizona thinks it's a bit too controversial and won’t let them do it. Back at the meeting with Avery things are not going well and he blames the women in charge for being too personal.

Amelia’s fearful that given how long this tumor has been growing, she may have placed her past patients in danger so she starts reviewing all her charts. Webber offers to take a look, proving that she in fact had a lower mortality rate than her brother Derek even with the tumor. He then tells her how important it is that she tell her family.

Jo and Alex make fun of Kepner over the hoco pro while in surgery together. She takes it to heart and explains that she wants them to maintain their teenage ideals because growing up changes everything. Walt questions Mer as to why she went for Riggs. To which she said that he got her given his situation with Megan and knew he couldn’t replace Derek. Walt is immediately impressed that she talking about her feelings and with himself for her growth before going into cardiac and respiratory distress.

Harper Avery pulls the funding for the hospital and then Bailey stands up to him, explaining herself and her decisions. Which is extremely impressive, but awfully threatening to a man in power, so he fires her and lets the hospital keep its funding. April intervenes when the girl wants to say no to the Hoco Pro. She tells her that “life is too short to care about your social media status!” Amen! YES APRIL! Robbins and Carina share a sensual moment, just as they find out Carina’s method works: baby starts crowning. Amelia finally tells Maggie about the tumor, in which Amelia finally lets her guard down, and cries. She asks Maggie to help her tell Owen and requests that she tell Mer because she can’t since Mer has always said she was crazy and this would prove her right and that’s what hurts her most of all (I mean if that doesn’t make you sob idk what will!) and they cry together. I must say their performance is magnificent!!

Katherine and Bailey try to figure out how to fix things with Harper, but go to find him.. dead. And with relief (I mean this man was mean, disrespectful, and by no means loving) they tell the hospital about his death and accomplishments. Bailey feels like a fraud and feels bad for staying chief, but Warren takes care of that ;). Mer waits for Walt to wake up post op and tells him she figured it out before she confronts Riggs who is packing to leave. She tells him that he betrayed her by betraying the dream they both had of their loved ones returning to them. She tells him to fight.

SUPER CUTE/CHEESY JOLEX MOMENT Jo does a hoco pro by waiting for Alex by his car and asks for him to move back home while holding a Homecoming? sign. I MEAN COME ON THAT’S ADORABLE. Tears of joy... tears of joy (no no not them, me).

Owen’s angry with Amelia, but stops in his tracks when he realizes the tumor on the walls behind her are her own. Maggie tells Mer. Amelia gets admitted with Owen at her side and then Mer jumps into bed to comfort her. They’re all by her side now.

A few additional thoughts:

It broke my heart to see Amelia in pain, especially when she thought she had caused harm to her previous patients. When Webber told her that her mortality rate was lower than Derek’s, not only was I impressed but I was so proud of her. Everyone has always doubted her ability given her past with substance abuse and of course they compare her to her brother, but here she proved herself. But what’s interesting, is that if you’ve watched her journey on both Private Practice and Grey’s Anatomy, you’ll realize that we’ve actually never known Amelia without a tumor, given she’s been living with it for ten years. So what does this mean for her if she survives the surgery? Which is a scary statement, you know, the idea that she could die. I love her character and feel she’s grown so much throughout the years, even with the tumor causing some alterations. But that’s just it, if she survives, who will she be? Honestly we will meet a whole new character. But will she be okay? Will she survive the surgery unscathed? Will she still be able to be a surgeon? Really it all comes down to, what does the surgery mean for Amelia? Will she live or will she die? Who will she be at the end of next week's episode? Praying for you Amelia. <3

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: I am so proud of Meredith’s development. She’s actually talking about her feelings and then acting on them. She’s growing and healing, which is a beautiful thing. She’s finally expressed her feelings about the way Nathan is handling things with Megan. He gets the opportunity most people only dream of, and as Mer said, he’s wasting it! I’m glad she gave him the push to fight for his love, even through the mess (let’s just hope he takes her advice to heart). Because well that’s what life is about sometimes, things are a little messy before they’re all you’ve ever wanted. There’s never a perfect time to fight for what you want or feel, sometimes you have to just go for it and clean up the mess as you go. This reminds me so much of Mark Sloan, where he tells Avery in season nine just before he dies: “If you love someone, you tell’em even if you’re scared that it’s not the right thing, even if you’re scared it’ll cause problems, even if you’re scared it’ll burn your life to the ground [that parts a bit intense, idk if I’d go that far, but I get his point and miss him so much!], you say it and you say it loud, and then you go from there.” Because honestly at the end of the day, isn’t it better to know and maybe be wrong, heal and move on, than to wonder the rest of your life what could’ve been if you tried?

Finally: JOLEX IS MOVING BACK IN TOGETHER WOO HOOO! I mean did you really think I wouldn’t include them at the end… haha rookie mistake! But as you can see I’m so happy for them and Jo’s hoco pro was absolutely adorable! Their love is just so pure. <3

Synopsis:

Megan is out of surgery and is devastated it didn’t work. Mer broke all the mugs in the Attendings lounge and Webber and Maggie try to talk to her. Arizona finds out Carina is Deluca’s sister. Jo does the walk of shame and what accidently steps on Glasses’s glasses. Bailey is angry about having to wear heels on the job because of society’s perception of women of power having to dress with heels. Maggie and Alex try to cheer up Mer, but ultimately influence her to find a new innovative solution. She’s going to do an abdominal wall transplant, with the help of Teddy, Webber, and Bailey. April is avoiding Jackson. Jo needs to talk to someone about Glasses, but has no one. So she urges Ben to be her new Stephanie until she can find a new one and as she gets his approval, Glasses shows up with her ID badge, you know the one she left on his mother’s basement floor. Yeah just let that sink in... lol and to make it worse Alex is close behind and straight up laughs in her face. Ben tries not to laugh, but isn’t sure what Steph would do ahaha.

Mer presents her case to Megan and she wants it, even if the rest are skeptical. She finally puts aside her light and go with the flow attitude and reveals to her family how even though she’s scared she doesn’t want to be a hostage to her body and bed, like she was for years in Iraq. She wants her medical freedom and while she can’t control the outcome, she can make her own decision. Now Jackson is being weird to Maggie. Mer offers to the Sub I’s that the one to find a donor ab wall will get to scrub in on the surgery. Carina asks Bailey if she can do her not so pg research study at GSM. Her study focuses on how sexual stimulation can help with pain management and the possibility of a drug that helps with sexual enhancement for women. At first Bailey is skeptical, then she looks to her heels, and then she realizes it's important to support other women.

Amelia is prepping the teen for surgery and motivates the father to be strong. Meanwhile Jackson protests her plans to proceed with Bailey. Again Bailey looks to her heels and supports Amelia, I mean Amelia is the head of neuro and she is capable of making the decision on her own. And Bailey switches her heels to her comfy shoes, while Mer recruits Jackson for her surgery. Teddy, Owen, and Riggs all try to get Megan’s son to the U.S., but they can’t find a lawyer to represent them. The search for an ab wall is troubling as the Sub I’s suggest a woman who's been deceased for 3 days, a woman with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, and a man. Bailey, Maggie, and Amelia check in on Carina’s research. Alex tells Mer that Jo slept with Glasses and she compares it to when she slept with George. Jo tells Ben why she slept with Glasses, and she opens up to him about how in the past she’s slept with guys who’ve hurt her. He then brings up her past of beating up some of the guys, and explains how it was self defense. But they are interrupted by none other than Glasses, who found the perfect donor. And she sharked him, like Mer did to Christina in the first ever episode of Grey’s. Jo defends herself to Glasses who is pretty upset that she stole his surgery, but then ALEX COMES IN AND DEFENDS HER!!! And then he laughs at her again for sleeping with him.

Teddy, his mom, and Megan all confront Owen on his marriage to Amelia. Deluca questions Amelia’s motives of helping the teen. She defends herself by saying that she doesn’t want the family or the boy to lose himself to an addiction to drugs from the constant pain he’s in.

Ben talks to Jo about her situation, as Bailey is in earshot. He tells her that Karev was only trying to protect her and that he’s not the type to hurt her. Then Bailey stepped in, told him never to tell a woman how she should feel, he accepted it and walked away. After Bailey chimes in a message of female empowerment/strength (yesssss Bailey!!) and then in essence repeated the same advice (she’s the best!).

The Owen intervention continues, and tension rises until Megan asks him to take her son if she dies. Meanwhile Arizona visits Carina in her research lab and they share a really sensual moment. Then RIGGS PROPOSES TO MEGAN....until they’re interrupted by Mer who found a match...talk about awkward...

Owen goes to confront Amelia. And says and does all of the wrong things. First he suggests, mind you this is out of the blue, that she go to therapy, or be put on medication because while she’s an amazing person no one else sees it and something's wrong. She then counters that Teddy is still in love with him, Megan doesn’t like her, and that's his motivation to have her evaluated. Then she goes on to let Owen go be with Teddy. Mer tells Jo not to apologize for being a shark. Webber and Maggie share a sweet moment where he tells her that when she does something spectacular, which is often, he likes to take some credit for it (over Ellis).

Ben finds Alex and tells him what Jo told him. Ben tells him that Jo is afraid of him, given what he’s capable of (beating up Deluca). Megan’s surgery is a success! Amelia calls Jackson in to fix the mess she made of his jaw and he’s infuriated. But his surgery ended up being a success. Jackson warns that if that happens again, she’ll report her to the medical boards and get her licensed revoked.

April and Jackson talk. She finally is truthful with him, she tells him the pain that she’s in. She can’t do the casual sexual relationship, she needs the whole thing and he can’t provide that. She’s in so much pain that she decides it's best for her to move out. OWEN AND TEDDY KISS... but Teddy tells him she won’t be with him while he’s married. Amelia takes part of Carina’s trial. Bailey throws away all her heels, while Ben tries to convince her to keep a few pairs ;).

WARNING ABOUT TO FREAK TF OUT.. THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING...

ALEX TELLS JO THAT HE LOOKED UP AND FOUND HER HUSBAND..yes you read that right..he was honest with her. Then he apologizes for doing it without asking her.And he promises her that he would never physically hurt her, and that he grew up with an abusive father, he’s seen it first hand and he could never do that to her. (brb crying, omg I love him so much....) Shocked, she realizes that he saw Paul and didn’t kill him. And confirms that he didn’t do anything to him. THEN SHE WALKED AWAY.... BUT WAIT WHAT OMG.... SHE KISSED HIM....and the rest is history. And they’re back <3.

Mer finds out that MEGAN TURNED DOWN RIGGS PROPOSAL BECAUSE SHE THINKS HE’S STILL IN LOVE WITH HER! And Mer walks away as fast as she can.

Amelia comes out of the MRI machine and notices a scan on the screen and finds out that SHE HAS A HUGE BRAIN TUMOR. YUP. LET THAT SINK IN. AND FADE TO BLACK.

A Few Additional Thoughts:

If you’ve read my previous posts, you’ve probably gotten to know who my favorites are. So it won’t surprise you when I tell you this 2 hour premiere was A. Fantastic, B. Riveting, C. A lot to talk about. So bear with me as I tell you some of the major things I found important, but also some of my favorite parts. This one's a long one, but I promise the going forward they’ll be shorter :). I’m going to combine episode 1 & 2 since they were presented together.

So major improvement so far is: Communication. Everyone was actually honest and open with each other, we which haven’t seen in a little while. Like Alex coming clean with Jo, Mer telling Megan the truth, and April telling Jackson how she feels. This to me seems like they are all coming into their own and realizing that what's best in the long run is to be honest with one another.

There has been some major comic relief so far this season. I mean even the opening scene with Megan, which was heartfelt, but it also could’ve been a real tearjerker. Instead they made it light and sweet. And even with Jo sleeping regretfully with Glasses, and Alex laughing at her instead of being defensive. Or one of my favorites, Arizona being schooled on the latest dating lingo... even if it’s not the fun kind. I’m loving this lighter sweeter air.

But don’t worry, it had it’s fair share of seriousness. For one it talked about the double standards of women in the workplace vs men. Bailey who’s the boss, fully embodied it’s meaning when she stood up for Amelia, approved Carina to do her controversial research study, defended Jo’s right (and all women’s right) to embrace their feelings/opinions unapologetically, backed Mer on her innovative surgery, and finally when she took off her symbolic heels and traded them in for her work clogs (going against societal pressure that a woman must do a “man’s” work in heels). Bravo, Bailey, bravo!

We also had a glimpse into the conversations that need to be had to improve and modify our immigration laws. These two episodes also exposed us to a bit of what is to come as we learn about Megan’s prisoner of war story. I think this will be an interesting story and provide us some needed perspective on the realities of some of the things that can happen to our veterans/soldiers overseas. Thank you to all of our service men and women for your time and commitment!

It touched briefly on the domestic violence and abuse story line. We see Jo as she begins to open up more freely about her past and I think this proves she’s slowly healing. Ben wonderfully and truthfully tells her never to blame herself for the way men treated her and that under no circumstances was it her fault. With this he tells Alex that Jo is afraid of him given her past, which pushes Alex to talk to her. Thanks to the help of Ben, Alex assures Jo that he would never hurt her. And when she found out that he didn’t do anything when he found her husband, it proves to her that he can be trusted. Honesty brought them back together (and Ben). But I truly believe her history with domestic abuse is an important one to tell and it’s one that’ll probably be further explored and broken down this season (allowing conversations to be started within our communities).

*A little side note. I just want to point out how crucial Ben has actually been in Jolex’s love story. I mean last season he was the one who told Deluca that Alex was going to take the plea to protect Jo, which ultimately lead to Deluca dropping the charges. And this season Ben tells Alex that Jo is afraid of him given her past and this pushes him to talk to her and the rest is history. So THANK YOU BEN!*

Then there was the shocking final moment in which we learn of Amelia’s brain tumor. I’m still in shock, as I’m sure you are too. But I think that the story is important because it reminds us that we must take care of ourselves. I hope this inspires people to stay on top of self care by getting regular check ups and taking time to do the little things for yourself as well. Praying for you Amelia!

Overall this was a great premiere and I can’t wait to see where this season takes us! Cheers!

Season 14 Episode 1: Breakdown This House

Synopsis:

The episode opens with Amelia and Owen greeting Megan after her helicopter lands. Megan at first says she doesn’t know who he is, but it ends up being a joke, lightening the tone of a very scary, yet relieving moment. Once she’s in the hospital we learn that she’d actually been treated pretty well where she was in Iraq given the situation, but she would’ve been killed had she tried to leave. As she reunites with Riggs in this really sweet moment, they find out that there was a bombing six months prior and her abdomen hasn’t healed properly.

Elsewhere, Bailey holds a meeting to discuss some of the damage from the fire (last night aka last season’s finale), warning everyone where it’s safe to be. And comically as she’s saying this the ceiling comes crashing down. Bailey handles the situation just as you would think: like a boss (with a little sass). As this is happening JO ACTIVELY GOES UP AND TALKS TO ALEX ABOUT STEPHANIE LEAVING. This is not a drill! They actually speak, like they are friends...something we haven’t seen in a few episodes. And of course Deluca and Jo make eye contact, alluding to one of the many suspected love triangles this season. Hunt and Riggs take a leave of absence, while Amelia begins working right away, giving Owen space, leaving Maggie and Meredith worried.

Riggs takes Megan to get an abdominal CT in an attempt to find out her options for her frozen abdomen. Meanwhile, she asks him if he’s met anyone substantial...and on que Meredith walks through the door (unbeknownst to Megan) to check on Riggs. She leaves and he answers Megan with a charming, “she’s not you” in regards to his secret someone.

Amelia is working with Deluca on a teen with excruciating head pain, but mysterious condition. Meredith butts heads a bit with Bailey and Webber on a surgical plan for Megan. She wants to do a riskier approach, while they’d rather play it safe. Megan sides with Meredith (she still doesn’t know who she is) and then proceeds to tell them all that she has an adopted son in Iraq and plans to go back to raise him. *Side note: Here they cleverly bring up the current immigration laws, which prevent her from bringing her son to the U.S. One of the many reasons why I love this show is because it talks about real issues and starts conversations of change!*

At the OR board, Ben recognizes that Jo seems upset. She tells him that she misses Stephanie, wonders who’s gonna be that person for her now that she’s gone. Comically he states that she’s making Steph’s misfortunes about herself and she throws it right back at him when he calls saving her a rush. As he exits, Alex invites her to present a case, and the little boy thinks she’s Allora the Warrior Queen (which is a super clever pun because Camilla Luddington was once Lora Croft!). It is here where Alex offers her a solo surgery! (They’re talking, and even working together, ahhhhh progress!!)

The Sub I’s are 4th year med students who get an extended interview combined with the opportunity to do a six week rotation at GSM. They are basically a hyperbole on the millennials, who as we know can be a bit too into technology and not as good at taking social cues. This doesn’t mesh well with the attendings or Webber. When they finally get to see the action, half of them get queasy and pass out while the others scream... it’s gonna take some patience to train these sub I’s, but I think Webber is up for the challenge... or is he?

Owen tells Megan about their mom being with a 35 year old firefighter, lol imagine that! Then Megan tells him that she wants him to be happy and not to feel guilty for leaving her behind. Arizona is still trying to find Eliza after she’d been fired, and goes to her apartment to find that she’s moved without telling her.

Owen goes to get coffee and TEDDY SHOWS UP!

Amelia’s patient has an osteoblastoma that is benign and invading a lot of the bone structures around the jaw and skull. Everyone thinks her surgical approach is too risky, but she refuses to send the kid home. In the new skills lab Jo and Ben are caught talking again, this time Ben tells her he’s not going to be her new Stephanie... yea okay we’ll see about that. In come walking in the Sub I’s and she shows them the lab, but they are all too busy looking down at their phones taking notes. At lunch with April, Arizona finds out about the horrible new break up trend ghosting, and that in fact is what Eliza did to her. Teddy reconnects with April and Arizona. Maggie is uncomfortable with Jackson after April told her about his feelings for her. Teddy calms Owen down, while Amelia is trying to save the teen’s life, but catches the two of them getting cozy. Owen tells Teddy Nathan and Mer’s history, but she’s mad they didn’t tell about their history. So Teddy takes it into her own hands, and confronts Meredith, Amelia defends Mer and then gets grilled by Teddy.

In Jo’s surgery, the Sub I nicknamed glasses dropped his glasses in the surgical field contaminating it and they had to sterilize the field, then she kicked them out of the OR. Amelia then addresses her mixed feelings about how Owen’s sister metaphorically came back from the dead, while her brother doesn’t have the same fortune. So to get her mind off of this reality she’s focusing on this case. Avery shuts her down and not only will he not assist her in the surgery, he goes to Bailey in an attempt to stop her from doing the surgery at all. Karev and April complain about the Sub I’s and gets grilled by Webber, and when Bailey goes to high five him, and he tells her that they are not fit to be doctors.

Mer and Alex have a heart to heart. She feels bad about inserting herself into the situation, but Alex assures her that she is just trying to be the surgeon she wishes Derek had had. One that could’ve and would’ve saved his life. And she tells him that he’s got to tell Jo about the private investigator to find her husband. He’s trying to win her back, and apparently the whole hospital knows it (YES!). And Mer even tells him that if he wants a future with her, he’s gotta be honest with her.. not gonna lie I’ve never loved Meredith as much as I do so far this season! She’s confident and I feel like she’s growing into herself a little more.

Maggie is honest with Jackson and confronts him about what April told her about Jackson liking her. She then answers for him and agrees that they are on the same page (when they’re not) and continues on with her life. Mer is responsible and tells Megan about her past with Riggs. Megan goes in for her second surgery. Arizona goes out to the bar and gets hit on by a new woman. Jo watches Alex from across the bar. Deluca comes to the bar to talk to Jo and she stops him cold in his tracks to tell him that she’s STILL IN LOVE WITH ALEX! OMG OMG OMG I need a minute.

She then goes on to tell him that she doesn’t want to make it awkward between them. But the damage is already done, given he came to vent to her about Amelia. Whoops, ohh well at least he got the message loud and clear. Not to mention that means no Jo-Deluca-Alex love triangle wooooooohoooo! Then look who shows up. Glasses! He offers to buy her a drink and she opens up to him a bit. Teddy confronts Owen about Amelia not being there. Mer did the surgery successfully! And guess what, remember that woman that was hitting on Arizona, yeah well she went home with her and turns out her name is Carina.. Deluca. Yup that’s right, she’s Deluca’s sister. And so ends the episode with the Deluca’s hashing it out in Italian, while Arizona watches amazed and confused. OH WAIT.... NOOOOOO JO SLEPT WITH GLASSES (with instant regret written all over her face). Oh and turns out Mer’s surgery didn’t work.

Season 14!

Welcome back! I’d first like to say how excited I am about the upcoming season. It’s gonna be an emotional rollercoaster as usual, but I’m so ready for it and I’m sure you are too! Here are some changes to look forward to:

Krista Vernoff is back and better than ever! Not only is she writing this season, she’s the new show runner! She’s bringing Grey’s back to its roots, while keeping the material fresh, funny, steamy, and sensational.

Given the catastrophic fire of last season, we get to see Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital change up its set design and style.

Teddy’s back! This could prove to be interesting given Amelia & Owen’s current marital struggles. But hopefully we get to see her professional side as well, maybe some cardiac surgeries-- am I right?!

And finally, this season holds the 300th episode! This in itself deserves a standing ovation! Congratulations to everyone involved and just know how proud the fans are!

Synopsis:

So after a week of waiting to know whatever Stephanie survived, if Alex will finally talk to Jo, and if Owen and Riggs see Megan, only a few of those concerns are answered. The episode opens where the last one ended: Mer walking away from her car to see explosions protrude through a corner of the hospital. Robbins and Eliza see the explosion from their car and hop out to see what's going on. Meanwhile Jackson and Maggie can hear it above them. Panicked, Jackson finds that the doors have unlocked to allow everyone to evacuate, and decides to search for Steph. Mer, Arizona and Eliza try to get in to see what the hell is going on and to help in anyway they can. The police officers deny them access, until Queen Bailey orders their clearance. YES BAILEY! Along with Richard, they get the staff together and order everyone to evacuate and to help their patients evacuate. Jackson continues to search for Stephanie, with little luck.

As Mer is looking for Riggs to tell him about Megan, she overhears the inattentive father of the forever-wandering little girl, Erin, claiming her absence. Meredith intervenes and promises to search for her.

Erin is trapped underneath medical equipment, but SHE IS ALIVE! As the camera zooms across the room we see a facedown Edwards…. but wait… STEPHANIE IS ALIVE! She hears Erin’s screams and tries to get up. She’s struggling, and I at first thought that maybe she could’ve been blinded from the burns, or the extremely forceful fall to ground from the explosion. But she isn’t, and the burns on her arms are fairly deep and extensive.

We jump back to Minnick, who offers to help, and looks for direction from Webber. Jackson then tells Minnick, Webber, and Mer that Stephanie is missing. When Minnick asks if the police are aware, he then assigns her the task of informing them. She argues that’s not her job and that she is needed elsewhere helping patients, and that Jackson and Mer should focus on the patient's -letting the police do their job. They ignore her and Webber continues to lead.

Back at Mer’s house, Amelia sets up a sitter for Grey’s children, tells Owen about the explosion at the hospital, and then they embark on their journey to see Megan. Amelia suggests that Owen gather pictures of his sister and him, in case her memory fails her. They go together.

Stephanie must help Erin, but is surrounded by fire. She instinctively grabs her lab coat, drenches it in water, and places it over a section of fire to create a path to erin. She briefly removes the machine trapping Erin’s leg, but realizes the bleeding is too severe and she could bleed out. So she scrambles for some medical supplies that are still intact and is able to tourniquet the leg. She must do a quick procedure in order to stop the bleed, but she knows it’s going to be extremely painful. In order to prepare Erin, she tells her how when she was little she spent a lot of time in a hospital and that when she was in pain she’d squeeze her hands really tight. This allowed her to focus on her hands and not the procedure. Erin listens to her advice and follows them as Edwards completes the procedure. I truly admire her strength and ability to remain so calm throughout this scene. Bravo!

Now unfortunately for all of you Jolex fans, there is only one scene which Alex is in. Jo is not in the episode at all. And I’m sorry to say that his scene was short lived. So here we go… Alex is back from his trip to see Paul. He shows up to the hospital completely confused as to what’s going on. Deeply concerned about his patients, he’s tries to find out the scoop from Mer. As she tells him about the explosion and the affected portions of the hospital, she asks him about his trip.

(I would like to take a brief moment to add, that he didn't even ask if Jo was okay? Or if she was hurt, or if she was at the hospital? Like ARE YOU SERIOUS? You just spent an half an episode, tracking down her husband and you don’t even wonder if she’s okay? Come on man… But I also understand that this must’ve been an extremely stressful situation to walk into. While you didn’t say anything about it, I choose to believe that the reason you didn’t say anything is because you just got back from seeing her. Yes, I know that didn’t happen in this episode, but I would like to believe it did and that’s why he didn’t ask, because he knew she was safe. Also let’s just pretend, while we’re at it, that they’re back together. I mean the preview said that he made a big decision in his relationship with Jo. Even though it actually wasn’t addressed in the episode at all. So that’s my guess and I’m sticking to it.)

Anyway… he tells Mer that “the trip was a waste.” Then he goes to find and help his patients.

After helping transport patients, we find out that Warren is absolutely terrified of fires. But April ends up comforting him by telling him to think of it as a BBQ.

Then Maggie and April talk about Jackson… I feel like their relationship is going to become really uncomfortable soon… April angrily tells Maggie about the last time there was a fire near GS, he jumped in to save a little girl and nearly got himself killed, expressing that: he’s “the kind of guy that runs into a fire.”

Since Steph was able to stop the bleeding, they are now both stable enough to move. But of course the fire expands. This forces her to think quickly and critically to find a way out. Brilliantly, she wets a blanket and then her hair and wraps it around the both of them. SHE RUNS DIRECTLY INTO THE FIRE. YES, I JUST SAID DIRECTLY INTO THE FIRE! They get through to the other side of the door, only to see that the entire lower staircase is engulfed in flames.The only way to go… is up. I would just like to take a moment here to point out her courage, and utter resilience. THAT WAS EPIC! She is truly a hero. Her bravery possibly saved both of their lives. Just incredible! Also shout out to Jerrika Hinton for your performance!

Jackson doesn’t have any luck looking for Edwards, but ends up finding a patient. At first being too prideful, she refuses his help. But then he takes charge and saves her.

Mer finds Riggs in the middle of a surgery on a floor that was supposed to be evacuated hours earlier. She steps in to try make it go quicker, when the firefighter comes in and gives them 15 minutes before he forces them out.

Jackson is bombarded with yelling and slapping from both April and Maggie after he returns from dropping off the patient. Clearly the both care about him and in this moment, April sees that Maggie has feelings for him.

Amelia and Owen are driving together, we he begins to open up to her. He talks about how his sister used to say he was to grumpy and needed to lighten up. Then he admitted that he doesn’t even know what to say to her. But she comforts him and assures him that the words will come when he finally sees her and that while it is hard to believe she is in fact alive. She really has been his rock recently and I think it’s great to see her having such confidence. It’s a real role reverser for her, and I think she is finally beginning to feel comfortable in her own skin. Owen is going to really need her now, and the road to recovery is going to be a long one for him and his sister, but I truly think Amelia is up for the ride.

Stephanie and Erin make it to the top of the staircase. She reaches for the door to the rooftop, but wait… IT’S LOCKED! ARE YOU SERIOUS? NO!! She lost her key card and the smoke has made it impossible to see where it is. It’s at this point that Edwards gives up. She tells Erin that they are going to place the blanket over their heads and wait. The little girl pushes her not to be fearful and to continue to fight. Don’t let what scares you stop you, but rather face it. I must say, although you have caused a lot of trouble for yourself little girl, that was beautiful. Well done! Stephanie, a bit skeptical, tells Erin to join her on the floor and that they must get under the blanket for now. BUT WAIT, WHAT IS THAT DOWN THERE? OH… IT’S HER KEY CARD! She gets up and speeds down the stairs to get it… promising to return. The air thick with smoke, Erin loses sight of Stephanie and is terrified she won’t return, she keeps screaming out for her.

Mer and Riggs finish the surgery and get out of the hospital, where Riggs receives some much needed O2.

SHE MAKES IT THROUGH THE SMOG AND THEY MAKE IT TO THE ROOF! Stephanie screams for help, but then the little girl LOSES CONSCIOUSNESS! Stephanie starts doing compressions.

Jackson checks with Bailey to see if they’ve found Stephanie. But MINNICK FORGOT TO TELL THE FIREFIGHTERS! Warren, overhearing this tells them that he remembers seeing her and shows the firefighters where on a map. But realizing it’s a bit unclear, he offers to guide them himself and grabs a suit. Bailey yells after him, but he still goes. May I just say, he really does well under pressure. I mean, he’s terrified of fires, but is able to face it if that means saving someone’s life. They follow him into the hallway, to the stairs, which I might add were now totally clear of smoke and fire? I mean when did they get that out? Regardless, they find the room where the explosion took place and see a burned up corpse. But Warren realizes it can’t be Steph because it’s too tall. Then Warren spots blood and they follow its tracks. They then find them on the roof! Steph is extremely angry that it took them so long and orders them to bring supplies up to save the little girl. They roll them to the ER with Stephanie doing compressions. Minnick tells her that she should be treated and to stop caring for Erin. Stephanie snaps at Minnick and tells her that she hasn’t survived everything to not see it through. Bailey backs her up and Webber and Bailey perform the life saving surgery on the child. Steph holds the little girl’s hand (tbh Where are her parents? Do they even know she’s alive?) Bailey and Webber must make a decision as to whether or not to amputate her leg. Edwards advocates for the little girl, telling them to save it. Jackson then walks in, encouraging Steph to lie down and get hydrated. Just then April and Warren walk in, find out that the little girl is gonna make it and can save the leg. STEPH THEN LOOSES CONSCIOUSNESS.

Mer goes to tell Riggs about Megan but wants to make sure he can physically handle it (breathing wise), so she checks his lung sounds. After determining that they are strong enough, she tells them about the dream they both have where Derek forgets his keys and Megan goes for coffee. This is the dream they have in which their loved ones return to them. Well she explains that his dream came true. In disbelief, he tells her it’s a not funny joke. But then she is finally able to convince him. He starts crying and having trouble breathing.

Owen and Amelia get to the base. They meet two guards who will show them to the helicopter pad. As they begin walking down the hallway, Owen stops being able to hear and freezes.

Catherine arrives at GS, wanting to know what happened and why it took so long to find Edwards. Minnick blames the fact that she was following protocol and helping patients, which made her forget to inform the police. Appalled and extremely fed up, Bailey refuses to accept that excuse. She tells her that she’s fired and that GS will not produce robots. They are going to revert back to teaching the way Webber has always taught, because he creates doctors who are also strong heroic warriors. She finally stands up to Catherine!

April tells Maggie she knows she likes Jackson and to tell him because she knows him really well and she knows that Jackson likes Maggie too.

Minnick tells Arizona she was fired.

Deluca works on Steph’s burn dressings, when Webber comes in to check in on her. He tells her that her road to recovery is a long one and they they all support her. She then thanks him for all that he’s done for her, but that she’s decided to leave. She tells him that he changed her life because he taught her “how to take her past and find her path.” She decided to save herself now, because she’s spent so much time saving others and it’s time she focus on herself. She wants to live her life outside of a hospital for once and see the world. Excuse me while I cry at how beautiful that moment was between the two of them…

Riggs gets all of his questions answered and is so so so happy. But in a quick moment of guilt he apologizes to Mer, but she tells him not to because it was Derek, she said she “would already be gone.” He then speeds out of there!

Amelia and Owen watch the helicopter land. Owen reaches for Amelia’s hand, as we see Megan’s body enclosed in a stretcher. Then the screen fades to black and we are forced to wait for next season to see their reunion.

A few additional thoughts…

I’m sad to see Stephanie go, but I mean what a way to go! She was truly epic and became a hero. I am disappointed though in the fact that not everyone got to say goodbye. Like first of all her best friend Jo, I mean that would’ve been such an emotional goodbye. They’ve been there for each other through everything and know we… I mean they don’t get closure. Like what happens next season when they return? Will they explain that as soon as Jo found out she came to her bff’s side? Also what about Amelia? I mean I know she’s got a lot on her plate, but I know she would want to say goodbye to her sidekick. They were buds and they’ve worked closely together for YEARS. I’m so sad that they don’t get closure. And what about Jackson? I mean he helped save her… but are their still feelings there? Cause I mean he searched an entire hospital for her.

I’m also disappointed we didn’t get some type of closure for Jolex. I mean it didn’t have to be anything big, honestly I would’ve been happy with a cliffhanger. But hey maybe next season.

What does this mean for Minnick and Arizona? Are they done? Will they do a long distance thing? I feel like Arizona was starting to be happy again.

That little girl’s parent better start paying attention. And they better be EXTREMELY thankful to Stephanie! She saved their child, who could’ve been safe all along if they had been paying attention.

Overall, this season had its ups and downs and as always I can’t wait for next season! Hopefully it will be a bit more hopeful! :) Truly outstanding job to all those involved (actors, writers, directors, set designers, costume, makeup, hair, music, and special effects), you all continue to blow me away!

Synopsis:

Okay so this episode is INSANE! There is so much happening… just so much. Your emotions will be everywhere. You will probably yell at your screen. You will need tissues.

Meredith and Riggs are in bed together, and when she wakes up she’s stressed. She’s not ready for Riggs to meet the kids, especially if he comes out of their mama’s bed. Amelia rolls over in her bed and it’s mad evident that she misses Owen.

Meanwhile Owen is woken up to the sound of knocking on the door. He opens up the door to find two Army officials. He is in such a phase that we can’t make out what they are saying but it is safe to assume it’s about Megan. He’s sobbing, so you are made to believe that she died.

After only three therapy sessions, Steph asks for clearance. With little to know pushback, Webber signs off on it.

Alex finds Jo’s husband. His name is Paul Stadler. He goes to a conference and contemplates going up to him.

Owen shows up to work in a haze. A baby, who is choking, is rushed into the ER. He gives her a very forceful (excessive really) backslap. He ends up saving the little baby’s life! Two patients are sent to the ER, who are expected to have been sleeping together in the car, when they get into an accident. Steph, April, Bailey, Deluca, and Jackson are all working on the case together. Stephanie gets called out when Minnick comes into the exam room and she scolds her for skipping out on counseling. Immediately after she puts her on scut work, as a form of punishment.

The little girl, whose baby sister was choking, goes wandering around the hospital. Her father and mother are both distracted by the baby’s scare and they lose track of their older daughter. The husband keeps texting the nanny (obviously having an affair) and paying no mind to his child. They ask to speak with Owen… uh oh.

Alex just stares at Jo’s husband, trying to come up with the words to say to him. All of the sudden he goes up to him and starts up a conversation about his work as a doctor. He tells him his name is Alex Stevens (any old fans will find this to be super ironic because that was the last name of his first wife Izzie). They drink together and Alex ends up getting him really drunk. As they are walking out together, Paul gets a call from his current girlfriend. Getting angry he yells that she doesn’t have to know where he is at all times and he’ll call her when he wants. The then throws his phone across the street shattering it. Alex is brewing after seeing the way he treated the girlfriend and thinks of Jo. At this point he begins beating him to a pulp. (In case you’re wondering, I was screaming at my tv! I couldn’t believe my eyes. I was terrified for Alex’s fate). He KILLS him. Yes that’s right he kills him and ends up in JAIL again. (Now crying!)…

Oh wait… that’s just a vision. SHONDA WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO DO TO ME. I LITERALLY FREAKED OUT AND THEN POOF IT WASN’T REAL. While I am thankful it was only a vision, nonetheless it terrified me.

The guy who was in the accident with the girl wakes up and wants to see his presumed girlfriend. But he has a liver lack which could kill him if he moves, so he’s not allowed to see her. All the doctors then get into a debate about what they think the two patients are to each other. Some think it’s just a hookup. Others believe they are in love. Jackson and Maggie presume the worst, until they are considered cynical by the group. Maggie then decides to change her view and chooses to believe that they are in love. Trying to convince herself and Jackson that she isn’t cynical, Jackson just laughs at her determination.

After Mer had already returned the little girl to her parents when she attempted to play with a syringe full of epi, she find her again but this time in the X-ray scan viewing room. Riggs is great with her, extremely patient, and delightfully brings her back to her parents. Mer impressed with his skills with kids, decides to invite him to dinner with her kids. Mer begins to freak out a bit when she realizes what she’s done. She goes to Amelia to talk and tells her that she feels sick. Amelia ends up being her rock and pushes her to be comfortable with the uncomfortable.

Owen goes to talk with the family. Don’t worry they thank him! (phew) But as they are expressing their gratitude, he freaks out when she hugs him. Amelia, having witnessed the event, pulls him aside and finds out THE SISTER IS STILL ALIVE. It turns out that she was trapped in a basement for 10 years overseas. He’s absolutely terrified to believe that it might not be her, he doesn’t want to get his hopes up. Amelia decides that it’s time they find out. SHE REALLY IS THE REAL MVP IN THIS EPISODE!

We’re back to Alex. This time he finds Paul as he’s about to go on stage. He threatens him and tells him to stay away from Brooke Stadler… THAT’S RIGHT WE FIND OUT JO’S REAL NAME! But things go awry when Alex returns home. He goes to the Jolex apartment to talk to Jo when he here’s sounds of distress. He finds the door open and Paul on top of Jo. HE’S CHOKING HER! HE THEN TELLS ALEX: “HEY ALEX, I FOUND HER.” HE KILLED HER! (LITERALLY SOBBING RIGHT NOW) Hold on I need a few moments to gather myself…

So it turns out it was another vision. SHONDA. I JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND. I WASN’T READY FOR THAT. ALSO THAT WAS JUST SO CRUEL. But THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR NOT ACTUALLY KILLING HER! … AND FOR NOT CRUSHING MY JOLEX DREAMS.

Stephanie is still working with the guy who was in the car accident and he persuades her to take him to visit the girlfriend.

Amelia and Owen go back to Mer’s house to find more information about Megan. Amelia speaks german? That’s just awesome! She ends up talking to Teddy Altman (another throwback to the OG Grey’s fans! She was the old Cardio surgeon who worked with Cristina and was best friends with Owen in the Army). Teddy confirms that it is definitely Megan. She has her transferred to Grey Sloan. Owen feels extremely guilty for giving up on his search for his sister. He just feels awful for moving on, living his life, while she was forgotten and being tortured for over ten years. Amelia hires the best PTSD expert for both Megan and Owen, so that they can recover together. They are certainly headed toward an uphill battle and this will most definitely take time.

They are definitely trying to ship Jackson and Maggie. They’ve been focusing on their relationship more and more this season. I think it’s only a matter of time before they hook up, or at least if they don’t someone is going to be friend zoned.

When they check on the girl who was in the accident, she is able to speak. She asks for the guy, wishing for his death…. Why you may ask? Well it turns out he got in her car and threatened to kill her. He forced her to drive into the woods so that he could rape her. But she was not about to let that happened and she pressed the gas forcing them to crash. Just as they receive this information the find that both him and Edwards are missing. THEY CALL A CODE ORANGE. Steph has no idea that he is a rapist or that he’s dangerous.

Alex decides to head home. Paul comes from behind him and steal Alex’s cab. In that moment Alex decides to let the husband take the cab and doesn’t say anything. There is an extremely long stare down… Something doesn't seem right about this. And I truly don’t believe that his story is over.

The police run past Edwards and the patient, and a doctor tells Stephanie that a rapist is on the loose. She then realizes something is very wrong, just as he holds a scalpel to her throat threatening to kill her if she doesn't get him out of the hospital. They head towards the stairs and he freaks out because he can barely walk. He forces her to help him down the stairs. As they are descending the stairs, she tries to shove him and he cuts her a bit on the throat. He threatens to go deeper if she tries anything again. Then they get out on an empty floor. OF COURSE THE LITTLE GIRL IS ON THIS FLOOR. Are you kidding me? Her parents need to pay attention to their child! Like what are you doing?!?! It turns out the doors are locked because of the lockdown. They are all stuck.

Mer comes home to find Owen asleep in Amelia’s lap on the couch. She tells Mer about Megan. She runs to tell Nathan, explaining that if it were her and Derrick, she would want to know.

There is no way out, that is until Stephanie makes the suggestion that a fire would be the only way the doors would open. Not understanding how crazy he truly is, he decides that’s a marvelous idea. She tries to talk him out of it when the little girl HOLDS OUT IN HER HAND A SPARK LIGHTER. SERIOUSLY? Little girl what are you doing? He makes her gather materials to start the fire, until Stephanie shames him to do it himself. As he is trying to place the fire closer to the detector Stephanie sees the oil and tells the girl to cover her eyes. She grabs the oil and SPRAYS IT ALL OVER HIM AND THE FLOOR AROUND HIM! THE FIRE PARTICLES FALL ON HIM AND HE ERUPTS INTO FLAMES! Yes, he’s literally on fire! Stephanie and the little girl hide in one of the exam rooms. But suddenly Stephanie sees that he is getting way too close to the oxygen tank. She tells the little girl to go to the far corner of the room and she runs to try to stop him… BUT IT EXPLODES SENDING HER FLYING BACK!

Does she die? While it’s not confirmed, my guess is that she did. Multiple explosions happen. Mer sees it. BLACKOUT.

A few additional thoughts:

I don’t even know where to begin. SO much has happened in such a short span of time. But I will say this, I think that Stephanie will die a hero. She tried to save the lives of many by sacrificing herself to stop the fire from setting off the gas tanks. I’m really disheartened by her loss and I think this is going to really change the morale of the hospital. She truly was an incredible doctor and I’m going to miss her on the show.

As for Megan. She is going to need a lot of therapy and time to recover after being imprisoned for so long. Both Nathan, Owen, and Owen’s mom are going to need to attend a lot of counseling to repair the damage done. I also think that this will end things between Mer and Riggs. He’s going to need time to process everything and reconnect with the first love of his life. Obviously she will understand and I truly believe she will be his confidant throughout the whole healing process.

Jo and Alex are on the mends, but something tells me that the season finale is going to do some major damage. I think Alex is going to tell Jo that he went to see her husband, but chose to remain silent. He didn’t want to put her in harms way or end up in jail for murder. This will put a strain on their relationship, but when Paul returns it will force them back together. I really wouldn’t be surprised if 1. he found Jo or 2. he ends up getting a job at Grey Sloan. I 100% believe that they are still in love with each other (I mean Alex found her husband and was willing to put himself in danger/at risk of jail time to confront her husband) and by him not doing anything shows Jo that he’s grown. Regardless, I think the only way they are going to overcome this is together.

Also what will happen to all of the people in the hospital? The patients, the doctors, nurses, everyone is now at risk! Not to mention the amount of damage the hospital will have when it’s all over. What does this mean for the fate of Grey Sloan? I’m terrified for the finale, but it will definitely leave us all on our toes!

Synopsis:

The Episode opens with Mer cleaning her room at three o’clock in the morning: She takes the tumor drawing off the wall. That’s right, she took the tumor drawing off the wall. Yes the same tumor that both her and Derek worked on together. She’s trying to move on and she’s taking baby steps (sorry MerDer fans!). But I will say I’m happy for her that she’s trying to open her heart again.

It’s resident review season and they are starting to make recommendations specialties and possible departures. They describe Warren as safe (saying he needs to take more risks), Jo as strong in ortho with a head for neuro (she has plenty of options), and Edwards as a strong candidate for neuro (the specialty she really wants).

Deluca asks Stephanie if she knows if Karev and Jo are together. She tells her she isn’t sure… Real quick aside here: as Jo’s best friend, HOW ON EARTH DO YOU NOT KNOW IF KAREV AND JO ARE TOGETHER? Please explain this to me?… Anyway, she realizes that he likes Jo, but tell him to let that go.

An adorable little boy shows up to the ER. He took a train all by himself because he has constant headaches and wants to get examined. Unfortunately without parental consent they cannot check the child. But all bets are off when he begins seizing. They step in to help and order scans. It turns out he has a brain tumor and needs an operation to remove it. The tumor must be removed in order to survive. At this point his parents show up to the hospital and are caught up to speed. They decide not to consent because they don’t believe in medical intervention. Furious, Stephanie helps discharge the patient while being extremely sassy and judgy toward the parents. Eliza is appalled with Edwards with the way she spoke to parents and reprimands her. Alex then finds out that patient is discharged without his knowledge and flips out on both Edwards and Eliza. Eliza is a jerk about it by bringing up his legal issues and saying that he shouldn’t jeopardize himself given his recent record. (Low blow Eliza!) A few hours later the little boy returns to the emergency room looking for Dr. Karev. Stephanie finds him and guides him to Karev, but finds out that he has gone blind from the tumor. Alex and Steph realize that the only way to save him is to lie on his charts and say that he had a seizure. This makes his case emergent and an excuse to operate. They use the Minnick method to spite her (where the attending writes the orders for the resident). They take him to surgery and remove the tumor without Amelia’s knowledge. The father threatens to have both of their licenses revoked, their jobs taken, and jail time. Mother stays quiet and is relieved that her son is now healed. Karev said he’d go to jail for this one. Minnick is extremely angry at both Karev and Steph. Stephanie tells her off. She talks to the father about how he only had one job and that was to do everything in his power to protect his child. He recants that it’s God’s job. As he walks away, Steph throws her tablet at the father. Karev talks with the mother and realizes she was the one who dropped him to the hospital.

Minnick goes to Webber and Bailey about Stephane’s behavior. They both brush it off and are reluctant to give any disciplinary actions. She believes Steph is going through resident burnout. Stephanie walks in and apologizes for what she did. But they decide to revoke her privileges and force her to go to counseling.

April, Maggie, and Mer are working with another patient across the hospital. Holly has a large cardiac tumor, and decides that she's gonna spend the rest of her life having sex with as many people as she wants. NBD. She was at the house of man in which she was having a one night stand with and when she tried to find a bathroom she ended up finding the front door by falling down a flight of stairs. She has splenic bleed and will need surgery. Maggie takes a look at her scans and believes she can remove the tumor. Having gotten her hopes up too many times with the thought her tumor could be removed, she declines the offer. But Maggie keeps pushing. Holly explains that she’s been through this before and that every doctor is the same. (they think they can fix it, she consents, they get stuck and can’t, and she has to comfort them by telling them that they tried their best). Mer is able to convince her by telling her that “the scary thing isn’t dying, it’s surviving and learning to live again.” Reluctant, she agrees to the surgery. They operate and realize the cancer has spread beyond the point of repair. They are forced to close and give their sincerest apologies. She then completes the cycle by comforting them. (Mer realizes that they have put her through it again and feels bad).

Warren is working with Jackson on a case and they must make a decision to amputate a patient’s arm or try to salvage it. Webber asks Warren his opinion and he picks the safer option in to amputate. He also see’s him later on working the pit rather than in an OR. Webber finally confronts him and tells him that he is a surgeon and should start acting like one. With a new burst of confidence, he tells Stephanie that he’s coming for her top spot. She tells him that she’s been suspended, and that maybe with this time he’ll be able to catch up to her.

Amelia and Maggie realize Mer is trying to move on. Maggie finally decides to try to make Riggs and Mer work, and decides to stay at the hospital instead of go home so that Mer can go on a date with him. But Mer cancels her date after she finds the famous post-it note. Amelia and Maggie are curious as to why she canceled. Maggie and April go out after realizing that they just want to live their life a little more loosely after working with Holly. Mer decides to go out with Riggs, and actually holds his hand. She’s moving forward!

Arizona and Eliza are really getting serious. Arizona explains how much she likes Eliza in an elevator scene. On their way home, Eliza says vents about Karev, Bailey, and Richard, Arizona tells her to shut up because she doesn't want to hear her speak ill about her friends. Arizona and Eliza finally sleep together after the many canceled dates and pop-up surgeries.

Deluca finally gets the courage to tell Jo how he feels, but before he can even get the words out, Jo stops him in his tracks. She loves having him as a friend, but 1. she’s definitely not ready for that and 2. he has to know that her heart is still with Alex.

The episode ends with Alex calling for a private investigator. He needs to find someone…

A few additional thoughts:

ALEX IS DEFINITELY LOOKING FOR JO’S HUSBAND! I wonder what this means. Is he going to bring divorce papers and make him sign them? Is he going to beat him up? Is he going to talk with him? Is he gonna try to reason with him? What about the repercussion? Could this put her in more danger? Will he tell her? SO MANY QUESTIONS? One thing is for sure, whatever he does it’s for Jo. Whether or not the consequences are good? That’s unknown. So he still loves her and he’s trying to help her. I have hope for them, I just hope nothing bad happens. But let’s face it, something bad is definitely going to come of this.

Mer is moving forward! I’m so proud of her. She deserves to be happy and I wish the best for her. But it’s going to take time, and that’s okay.

Synopsis:

So Alex is the only mature one in the Maggie/Riggs/Mer drama. To be honest I think that they are acting like children. Maggie discovers, while recording the press conference by the way Riggs looks at Meredith so lovingly, that something definitely went down between Riggs and Mer on the plane. I’m not going to spend too much time on the Maggie/Mer/Riggs drama because I think it's the least important story of the ep (and of the season), but basically Maggie is extremely angry at Mer and is being very immature about it. She feels betrayed by Mer because she’s all she had left and she thought she was the only one she could trust. But I truly think she feels -in the words of Tucker Bailey- butthurt because Riggs choose Mer over Maggie. Meredith apologizes, and while Maggie has the right to be upset (but only briefly) she needs to get over it and not be so petty.

Across the hospital, a more pressing issue occurs: Steph and April help a patient who is madly in love with her boyfriend (in an overly showy way). The patient throws up on April, who excuses herself to wash it out, when she finds a worm in her hair. The perfect relationship between the youngsters is then tainted when they discover that she has intestinal roundworms and a whole lot of 'em (like world record amounts). The perfect boyfriend leaves the girl because he’s really uncomfortable with the worms and pretends to busy himself doing other things. Fortunately they are able to remove all of the worms, while taking plenty of pictures (of course) and basically each of them being in their happy place -except for the patient. As she is recovering the patient is relieved when her boyfriend returns.

Bailey finds herself meddling in Richard and Catherine’s marriage because she thinks they are both way too stubborn to fix the mess on their own. She recruits April to help bringing Catherine and Richard back together, but they both run into roadblocks. But when April finally points out the similarities between Catherine and Bailey, Bailey realizes how she can confront Catherine. Bailey respectably yells at Catherine and puts things in perspective for her, she uses their similar experiences to level with her.

Alex’s patient, Veronica, is back (the one who decides to sacrifice herself for her baby in episode 6). They need to deliver the baby (6 weeks early) because the cancer is spreading too quickly and could ultimately affect the baby’s well-being. As she’s getting ready for her C-Section, Veronica decides that she wants to sign a DNR because she doesn’t want to leave Jeremy to suffer more if something goes wrong (he also doesn’t want him to know). They take her to delivery and lo and behold, the baby is born! For a few minutes they get to marvel in the miracle of life, but as Veronica’s health begins to decline, they push Jeremy to join the baby in the NICU. Her troubled breathing needs to be addressed with an emergency surgery, but she declines treatment because there is no guarantee it will work. Veronica confides her final thoughts with Amelia, saying how she truly does love Jeremy and that he’s loved her his whole life and that he will love her forever. But she asks Amelia to tell him “not to look back... to be a dad ... and to be fearless.” As she is slowly dying, she asks Amelia to hold her and says her last words: “we did good, the baby’s good.” Alex, who is heartbroken after losing the patient, tells Jeremy, who is holding their precious baby, that Veronica has died.

Catherine takes Bailey’s advice and admits she was wrong (which in her way is an apology) to Richard and he shows her the pictures from surgery. Owen comforts Amelia with a hug when the elevator doors open to her sobbing. They hug through the entire elevator ride, where no words are spoken and he gets off at his floor. Although there were no words, I do believe that that's a step in the right direction. As Meredith heads out the door to go out on the town with Amelia, she sees Maggie hasn’t gotten ready. She pushes her to join them on their GNO, even though she’s still angry, she decides to go.

A Few Additional Thoughts:

1. Thank goodness the Maggie/Riggs/Mer and Catherine/Richard drama is over.

2. They did a wonderful job portraying the Veronica and Jeremy story. While tragic, it is also beautiful and heroic.

Season 13 Episode 20: In the Air Tonight

Synopsis:

#GreysOnPlanes I don’t know about you, but I as soon as that hashtag was announced I had season eight finale flashbacks. My stress skyrocketed: I couldn’t watch another plane related death. I’m still recovering from losing McSteamy and Lexie and that was ages ago. But spoiler alert: thank goodness, no one dies despite the horrible turbulence. But before the flight is airborne, Meredith switches her seat and ends up accidentally sitting next to Riggs, whom she didn’t even know he was on the plane. Of course she leads him on and then says she doesn’t want to be with him minutes before becoming a member of the mile high club with him in the plane restroom (talk about mixed messages). But once they get back to their seats trouble arises. Turbulence picks up and a man is launched into the ceiling of the plane (because the force was so quick and strong), a child is hit by flying luggage, and a flight attendant breaks her arm. I must say the graphics in this episode were amazing and quite honestly made me never want to unbuckle my seatbelt on a plane again. Also shoutout to Chandra Wilson for directing this episode! After Grey and Riggs help the patients on the plane, they take a break and we learn why Mer won’t commit to Riggs, and that he was once in a plane crash as well. Mer still considers herself married to Derrick and is scared to let him go and she’s terrified to lose Nathan too because she has lost so many people in her life. She even talks about how she sometimes just waits for her day to come, it’s almost expected with all that she’s been through. (Aw Mer! Don’t think about how you almost die, think about how you have survived and that you are meant to be here. Take this as motivation to love more, laugh more, live more). Now remember the guy how hit his head really hard against the ceiling? Well, he has a brain bleed. They tried to monitor him until he could get help once they land, but the bleed gets much much worse. Since the captain can’t land the plane safely, Mer is forced to perform a major brain surgery on the plane. Yes you read correctly, ON THE PLANE. Given that the TSA is pretty strict, it's safe to assume that they will be forced to work with limited resources. She uses a syringe, hand sanitizer, and a barf bag to collect the blood. Then a man who complained about a crying toddler (and basically everything else) has a heart attack and loses consciousness. Riggs steps up to the plate to perform CPR and a AED machine. Both Mer and Riggs race the clock to save their patients. Then Meredith brilliantly finds a more efficient way to allow the blood to flow. She uses a pair of nail clippers to cut the syringe needle, places a straw over the needle, making the hole bigger, and giving the blood an easier path to land in the cup. As they both save their patients, the plane lands and everyone lives. Riggs helps Mer realize that it's time for her to start moving on and to give him a chance. She finally lets him in and decides to give it a try (finally). *Sorry MerDer fans! But think about it this way, Derek would want her to be happy and she will always be in love with him. Just like Arizona said “he was her great love” and their story was indeed epic.

My Take:

I love how Meredith defends a mom with a small child on the plane. The guy, who has the heart attack, complains about his need to get work done, but can’t due to the screaming toddler. She just shuts him down. Explaining how the mom doesn’t need anymore stress and that he should make use of his complimentary headphones. You go girl! Of course it's annoying when a child is crying on a plane, but you just have to suck it up. Also she gives up her seat so that the family could sit together. I think if more people had the plane etiquette Mer has, our flights would go a lot smoother and everyone would be more comfortable.

I’m so happy Mer was finally honest with Riggs. I think he’s good for her because he pushes her to move forward and try to do things that make her happy. I think this could be the start of a great relationship, let's just hope it doesn’t come at the cost of her sister’s trust. But I think Maggie will understand. Will she be mad? Oh hell yes, but at the end of the day that’s her sister and a man should never come in between a sibling’s bond. Also Merideth needs reassurance that everything is going to be okay and I think Riggs is that for her. But at the same time, since things are starting to look up, I wouldn’t be surprised if new developments with Rigg’s wife resurfaces. So we’ll see.

Synopsis:

It’s Maggie’s first day back and the episode opens up with Mer, Amelia, and Maggie at her mom’s grave. While Maggie is trying to process it all, Mer and Amelia chat by the car about the normal way to grieve (which there isn’t, everyone handles grief in their own way, although some ways are better than others). But I mean talk about different ways to grieve: Mer vanishes leaving her family and friends behind to process things alone, Amelia falls into an addictive cycle with drugs and alcohol to suppress her feelings (even though frankly it just amplifies them), and then Maggie visits her mother’s grave daily to leave flowers and talk.

Meanwhile, at Grey Sloan, Owen’s friends receive an OB/GYN consult from Robbins. Owen’s friend’s baby has a massive heart tumor that must be removed or the baby could die before she’s even been born. When Maggie finds about this case, she steals it from Riggs. But everyone has apprehensions about it because it’s her first day back after losing her mom and they are scared she’s not ready. She insists, even though everyone keeps trying to talk her out of it, and does this surgery. While in surgery they remove the mass and the baby forms an irregular heartbeat, causing her monitors to go off the wall. Everyone is pushing Maggie to act, but she just stands there. Convinced that she’s choking, they all are trying to get through to her until she finally speaks up. She tells them that she’s waiting because the heart has to learn how to beat without the giant mass. The baby is fine and they are able to put her back in utero so that she can make it full term. Good job Maggie for proving everyone wrong and not backing down! She demonstrated the true meaning of advocating for yourself, believing in yourself, and not backing down.

Back in the ER, Edwards finds Cross lying in one of the patient beds. Irritated she tells him to get out and that he’s fine, that all he has is internitis. Advocating for himself he tells Edwards that he truly believes something is wrong, so she reluctantly examines him. Edwards doesn’t take him seriously at all, and tortures him through countless testings. She finds that he has diverticulitis so they have to operate. But it’s when they are actually inside his abdomen they find that he has abdominal TB. Steph and Deluca are too scared to catch it, as it is very contagious, making April the only one brave enough to complete the operation. Edwards feels bad about how she treated Cross and Webber takes the opportunity to teach her the importance of patient advocacy. He stresses that as a doctor you are the voice of the patient and it is up to you to help them in anyway you can. She then keeps a very close eye on him, vowing to herself to be better.

Mer asks Riggs out.

Bailey doesn’t know the TB protocol and needs Richard’s help but is too stubborn to admit it. Thanks to Warren, who acts as the only adult in the situation, Webber tells Bailey and they are able to properly adhere to the procedure. Bailey and Webber continue to bicker over who deserves an apology/who was wrong in the whole Minnick debacle. Both blame each other, until Warren finally puts the situation in perspective for Bailey. He explains how lonely Webber is because him and his wife still are not talking. This forces Bailey to put aside her pride and ask Webber to dinner so that they can finally work everything out.

After surgery Jackson approaches Maggie and she gets extremely defensive. She then blames Jackson for her mother’s death. She doesn’t think that he did enough, saying that his job was to save her and he failed. While I know she’s in a horrific amount of pain she cannot blame Jackson for her death. He did everything in his power to save her, but it was too late. Hopefully when as the fog begins to slowly clear, she will see that all he wanted to do was help her.

Riggs and Arizona are friends! I thought it was adorable the way she approached him, declaring their friendship. But I will say she did intimidate him a bit when she finds out he likes Mer. Arizona tells him about the epic love story of Mer and McDreamy. (Honestly I don't know anyone who wouldn’t be intimidated that the person they really like had an untouchable love story for the ages). Let’s just hope this doesn’t deter him from pursuing her.

As Mer is about to go on her date with Riggs, Maggie comes home a mess. In that moment she knows that she must cancel and that she has to be their for her. What better way to make someone feel better than to…DANCE IT OUT. I’m so happy that the writers have been bringing this back! I think it’s a fun way to help relieve some pain and to open yourself up a bit.

After they all dance it out, Jackson finds Maggie sitting on the swing in front of the house getting some air. He brings her mother’s medical files to reveal to her that she had actually been sick a lot longer than she let on. This obviously devastates Maggie, but then he gives her photos of her mom traveling the world. She knew she was dying and decided to live her life to the fullest by traveling and taking it all in. Her mother gave these photos to him, so that he could give them to her when she really needed them. He felt that this was the perfect time and he promised her mom that he would take care of Maggie after she was gone. (How sweet!).

My Take:

Everyone grieves differently. Some people need to be left alone, while others can’t be. There is no normal way. But I think that Maggie’s description in the fetal surgery was perfect, your “heart just needs to learn how to beat on its own, there was once a weight that was there that isn’t anymore and it’s going to take some time.” We never forget the one’s we’ve lost, but rather we must simply learn to carry on. You must move forward, because you cannot move backward and even if you could you wouldn’t be able to get them back. It’s hard and it takes time, but you will learn to move forward. The pain will always be there, it lingers and shows up at times you don’t always expect, but it’s always there. Each day the load gets a little lighter, but it will never fully be removed. We must survive it and live our lives, death takes a piece of us, but don’t let it take all of you.

Also Stephanie truly needs to gain more compassion. She’s so quick to judge someone without really giving them a chance. I hope that her experience with Cross will make her a better doctor and that she thinks twice next time before coming to conclusions about a patient. Be an advocate, be smart, and be HUMBLE.
