1. i don’t like Imagine Dragons’ music and i think it is arguable that much of it’s a commercial product, but their members are, as stated above, more or less ex-Mormon.

the lead singer, Dan Reynolds, has discussed his active struggle with his faith and the cult of Mormonism. leaving a cult--especially one that practices shunning--is extremely difficult and can take years. and yet, despite this, he’s made it his mission to help combat issues affecting the LGBT+ community, including conversion therapy, LGBT+ youth suicide, and LGBT+ homelessness.

he has been a consistent and active ally to the point that he has an annual music festival called Loveloud that is dedicated to raising awareness about LGBT+ issues, featuring and promoting LGBT+ artists, and raising money for several charities. he has also donated his own money to LGBT+ organizations and gave his $1 million childhood home to Encircle, an LGBT+ advocacy group in Utah.

the guitarist, Wayne Sermon, has also given talks at conferences dedicated to assisting Mormons in leaving the cult and healing from their trauma.

2. the Lumineers have a history of holding shows solely so they can donate all profits to various charities and causes, including Planned Parenthood in Texas after Republican efforts to defund PP, Dakota Access Pipeline protestors, and LGBT+ charities in North Carolina following the passing of anti-LGBT+ legislation. a lot of their music that doesn’t make it to the radio focuses on issues like poverty, the working class, addiction, and trauma.

3. Marcus Mumford has explicitly stated that he doesn’t actually identify as a Christian, despite using Christian imagery in some of his songs. a person’s parents being Evangelical conservatives should not be an indictment on them. he and the other band members also kicked out their guitarist when he started spewing alt-right talking points and supporting Andy Ngo. i’m still not totally sure i trust his politics--he strikes me as pretty centrist--but good lord, he’s not an Evangelical.

do y’all not realize that you’re allowed to dislike music for purely surface level reasons? like that it doesn’t have to be that it’s made by terrible people--you can just seriously not like how it sounds?

making up bullshit theories where you falsely charge people--especially people actively fighting for progress--with being part of some kind of conservative religious extremist conspiracy theory to justify “i don’t like how they sound” is fucking awful and appalling. go outside.

can we talk about how one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the wilds is Fatin holding Leah as she’s starving/exhausted/sobbing while going through a mental breakdown and Leah says “I want my mom” and then Fatin’s fACE IS SO HEARTBREAKING AND HER “me too” AHHHHH

one of the many things I appreciated in the wilds: they have different body types and they aren't the focus of their individual stories.

when I started watching it I thought they were going to pull the "oh marthas background is about her body" like every other show does. but no, they gave a interesting real story that happens with a lot of woman.

as a fat girl, I loved seeing that onscreen not being treated like a big deal.

Have you ever wondered how much the girls know about each other?

I was just thinking how crazy it is how much we know about each girl’s backstory, but at the same time, how much do they know?

Like no one knew Rachel was actually cut until episode 7. And Shelby didn’t really know about Dot’s dad until episode 3, and she doesn’t even really know what Dot had to do.

And how does that influence everyone else’s POV?

Like we know all about how Dot has had to deal with heavy responsibility her whole life, but do the others fully comprehend her exaustion when she taps out?

Some can figure Martha’s uncomfortable from killing the goat, but maybe only Toni knows the reason why her fantasy world of positivity only exists in the first place.

We see a parallel between Toni busting Regan’s car and Toni tearing down the fort, but everyone else just sees the fort part (except maybe Martha).

No one knows a damn thing about Nora, even Rachel doesn’t know the whole story.

Do they know Leah was in a car accident? Do they know Rachel was hospitalized?

And don’t even get me started on Shelby because her episode is what made me think this. To us, we were watching her past catch up to her, but no one on the island saw the flashabcks like we did. Everyone was pumped to go home and here’s Shelby, falling apart at the seems.

(And dont think about how since Toni doesnt know Shelby’s history, she might assume that she caused Shelby’s collaps in her previously declared destructive habits, but i dont wanna cry so imma not think of that)

Of course it’s not necessary for them to share their whole lives together, but it does interest me to wonder how their actions are interpreted from the view of someone who didn’t get the same insight we do.

This is quickly going to become a Wilds fan-blog, but that’s besides the point….

Something that I haven’t seen many people in the Wilds fandom talk about is this scene. In my opinion this right here is easily one of the most underrated scenes. Up until now, everyone has looked at Rachel like she’s too intense or she’s a hardass or even like she’s just crazy (except Nora of course, but we all know Rachel won’t listen to Nora at this point).

Then there’s this scene, with Rachel in full panic mode, all the pressure and expectations and fear finally crashing down on her, putting her life on the line in the process, and Martha knows EXACTLY what to do.

She doesn’t even hesitate to speak to that part of Rachel that is freaking out, to look her right in the eyes and talk to her instead of trying to overpower her so that they can save her. Everyone is yelling and trying to grab her, but Martha truly hears her.

This is a perfect example of Martha’s character. She sees people for who they are underneath (which makes the situation with Dr. Ted so interesting too…), and she can see these real emotions the girls are experiencing. I mean, her best friend is Toni, who is constantly fueled by her anger, so she must have learned long ago that there is always something deeper going on that she can work with.

Tbh she makes it look so easy, but this takes so much awareness and compassion, and this moment was when Martha became one of my favorite characters in the show.

Long story short this is a Martha appreciation post and I need to YELL it from the rooftops

The Wilds theory of the day: *spoilers ahead* i feel like the reason Alex is always sent to the island by Gretchen and they always mention he knows the land the best is because he was one of the test subjects on the Adam project. I think people who are saying the footage Leah finds in the finale is old are correct because we’ve seen how diligent they are at watching over the girls’ footage in real time, on those giant screens, and it would just feel weird if they didn’t care at all about the guys island

#one of my favorite parts of the wilds is how none of the characters ever get the typical big apology redemption arc, or the whole ‘actually, that fucked up thing they did was fine because xyz.’ #instead, most of the 8 don’t even know what the other girls did before they got to the island, so their apologies are to themselves or people they knew before, and their fucked up things are just fucked up, full stop. #most importantly, every single character gets that redemption arc anyway, but not in big displays of apology and performative moments. rather, in little bits here and there.

#specifically with shelby’s story and character, i love the parallels between her and becca and her and toni. #they are extremely powerful in conveying the whole idea of ‘actions speak louder than words,’ which is what rachel said in one of the episodes — “the best apology is a change in behavior.” #we never see shelby do a big apology speech so that everyone can say ‘aw, it’s okay.’  #and i think it’s so important to convey that, yeah, sometimes people do shitty things, and there aren’t always excuses or justifications or background stories to make it okay. #what she did and said to becca was wrong; that will never change, and we see her feel guilty for it all the way to the end of the first season. #but we also see her put in situations similar, and we see her make new choices, and that is just as meaningful.

LEAH AND FATIN + hugs

one thing i absolutely fucking love about the characters on the wilds, which i was talking about with jordan @colorsinautumn, is the way they use similar tropes for multiple characters, but then make each person handle them completely differently.

leah and martha are both victims of sexual abuse and grooming on some level, but while martha repressed hers, leah deluded herself into thinking it was love.

shelby and toni are both lgbt, but about as far on each end of the security spectrum as it gets.

fatin and shelby are both the pretty girly-girls, but fatin is this sex positive, liberal californian, while shelby is initially portrayed as nothing more than tomi lahren’s hot younger sister (and then they deepen those identities! again!)

nora and dot both feel a responsiblity towards a family member and keeping them alive and healthy, but while dot does what her father asks, nora rats rachel out on more than one occasion.

leah and nora are both the weird, quiet, bookish girls, but again, couldn’t be more different in terms of personality and the way they interact with other peers.

and of course, the dynamic between the twins of “the grass is always greener” when it comes to attention from their parents

because of this, you can literally pair any character up with another and all of a sudden you have this unique, interesting dynamic. it’s amazing, and a sign of really well thought out writing and world building
