“Suddenly I’m thinking of tiramisu. Coffee with the sweet mascarpone cream…” Nahida slumps against her chair, casting her face towards the dome ceiling of the lecture hall, the little circular hole appearing white, like a sun that overlooks the sky. “I’m blaming you for this, Suisen. And you’re treating me some tiramisu once class’s over.” Leaning his cheek against his hand, Suisen stares at his best friend. Nahida, who never seems to understand what people are saying, but always listens attentively regardless. Nahida, who dances with the birds and leaves, just as much as she sings along with the crowds on the chorus. You do not belong in the monotony of the lecture halls and the tall towers of the Akademiya, he often thinks to himself, of her. You belong out there in the world, admiring everything there is to be seen, being loved by everyone there is to see you. “We don’t have to wait until class is over, do we?”

(In some other reality, they can be just two ordinary people living mundane lives, admiring the beautiful complexities of the world just as is, and nothing more.)

The worn out lady exhales, breath merely a thread of air in the billowing wind of the sands. “You know the sands are not just… some place you can walk as you please and hope to find some oasis, do you?” “I will not expect rain, nor rivers. But there will be something, may it be an abandoned ship or an Apostle looking for food.” “… And if you do run into an Apostle?” Hypatia lets out a smile that the old lady hears without seeing. “Why, I’ll just have to thank the stars for supplying me with some ichor.”

I like Hypa when she's initially introduced cause you see her and you’re like “oh okay haha noble girl who’s actually very awkward and endearing that’s cute” and then they unravel her character more later on and you’re like “oh. Oh you’re tormented by the guilt of a thousand suns actually”

Margaret is the representation of Hypatia’s family and this is noted by how she is designed to look very similar to the Campbells with her blonde hair and noble looking composure as well as her parallels with Adelaide where she is another guiding figure in Hypatia’s life and had helped her when she was at her lowest and how she recognizes the potential Hypatia has as a person but she ends up manipulating her for her own personal agenda and when Hypatia confronts her in the end and rejects her hand in guidance she is ultimately casting down her family name and their (and Margaret’s) control over her. This contrasts with Rust and how he is the representation of Hypatia herself aka a person who carries a lot of guilt with him because of his past actions and one who is very stubborn and resilient when it comes to his goals and it is him that gives Hypatia the advice that she must go on her path alone and that she can use her stubbornness to continue enduring and living for her own sake and that includes her utilizing her perseverance and skills to make the Farlands a better place to live for her and the people that she loves. When Hypatia takes Rust's path, she is accepting herself and all her mistakes, choosing to not let go of what she holds dear and using it to propel her forward through the guilt and pain that she feels. It is with Margaret that Hypatia finds autonomy and freedom and it is with Rust that Hypatia finds confidence and self-love

summary:

The invitation he sent out last was largely a matter of formality, on Neuvillette’s part. It wouldn’t be reasonable to exclude her from a gathering of close acquaintances, not when they’ve known each other for the longest time; even less so when one considers the matter of his calling, the birth of his existence’s purpose. No matter how things stand between them at present or how she would’ve felt about coming to such an intimate gathering, extending that hand was the bare minimum, a show of rightful respect. When Furina shows up to the gathering, bottled spring water from the far north in tow, Neuvillette assumes this, too, must be a reciprocation of that respect. “Thank you for inviting me,” is the first thing she says, fashionably late to the function. Handing him her gift, Furina echoes: “A happiest birthday to you, Neuvillette.”

(They dance on the surface with formality and propriety as reasons, burying deep all that is ancient, all that is raw and ugly.)

In that case, I’ll ask you another question,” she amends, a gentle smile curving her tone. “Do you have a name, Hat Guy?”

The goddess denied and the god that never became, bearing the weight of a name.
