Hello hello, I’m glitch, a writer and artist, and this is the blog where I share my work!

Q. What is lfls?

lfls is short for Like Father Like Son. It’s a Rise of the TMNT fanfic I am currently working on. Most of what I talk about tends to be about this piece of work, so it’ll come up a lot. Warning for darker themes!

I also post links to new chapters as I update. Do note it is required you are logged into an ao3 account to view this story due to recent AI scraping of the archive.

Q. When do you update / what is your update schedule?

Don’t ask me when the next update is, it will happen unless I announce otherwise but right now I am very determined to finish this. I work 40 hours a week and have class after that, plus I recently had some throat surgery that made me want some space from some of the content in lfls.

Q. lfls has a music playlist? Where is it / do you take song recs?

I have a spotify playlist for lfls here and although song recs are fine, please don’t send me too many! I have a very specific taste for writing music and don’t have the energy for 5 recs a day or something ^^;

Q. How will a character react in the healing part of lfls / behave later in the story / etc.?

Please be patient, this is part of the story and I don’t want to spoil it! Because of that, I won’t be answering questions about that anymore. 

Q. Can I write fanfic for lfls?

If it’s from a completed arc, aka not speculation on future events of the story, I’m okay with it. Please credit me, and I also prefer zero shipping content because of personal reasons. 

Q. How will the events of lfls change canon episodes and events later on in Rise of the TMNT?

lfls changes enough things that the later plot of Rise wouldn’t happen the same way at all, so I don’t have answers to specific questions of that nature. I also don’t want to give away plot, so I’m going to also avoid answering these types of questions. Feel free to check back after the end of lfls!

Q. Have any tips for writing?

Yeah! I have a tag for talking about that, and am happy to talk about my writing techniques and offer advice.

Honestly, ever since becoming a fanfic writer myself I’ve become like 500% more understanding and patient about other authors’ update schedules. An author takes 6+ months to post their next chapter? Yeah, totally get that real life can get in the way. An author abandons a fic? Disappointing, but it happens- sometimes inspiration for a story just dies. An author apologizes about taking so long to post a 10k word chapter? Dude, that’s like 18-20 pages on Word single-spaced. It takes me at least a week to write an essay for school a quarter the length of that, and that’s with a deadline. 

It’s probably the most important thing writing fanfic has taught me, tbh. How to fully appreciate the hard work someone else has put into their story. How important the role of the audience is to an author. And that no matter what, you are never entitled to demand more of a story that you are getting for free.

the chokehold of a broken family by ronzcaby - In Stars and Time [235k]

A retelling of the game ISAT, but giving an extra punch to the main character, Siffrin's, backstory and struggles. Usually I avoid second person but the style really grew on me with how it echoes the feeling of playing the game. Content warning for abusive parental relationships. If you like a reluctant villain story, this one is really good!

a word for 'bad miracle' by shingekicorn - My Hero Academia [226k+]

Years after the anime's conclusion, Izuku takes in the teenage half-sister he didn't know he had. This story does an incredible job in making the world feel very lived in, with interesting side characters and a compelling journey about grief.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Seekers of Soul by Level99Eevee - Pokemon Mystery Dungeon [663k+]

An original pokemon mystery dungeon story about a human trying to find her way home and the partner she meets along the way. If you don't know pokemon dungeon, it's basically talking pokemon d&d and that is all you need to know to hop in. This fic is almost complete and I will be very sad to see it go, as the characters are very well fleshed out and the arcs elegantly knit together.

The Thorns of Perfection by Salzaeus - Steven Universe [77k+]

Alone on homeworld and recovering from his recent loss of humanity, Steven has to figure out how to escape from within Homeworld's oppressive systems with no help from home. This fic just started updating again and I am very very excited to see where it goes.

The Language of Liars by S. L. Huang - Original Work [~180 pages]

Ro has been working his entire life to be the one from his generation to learn the language of the Star Eaters in order to jump into one of their bodies, taking over it as his own. It's a small sacrifice for the greater good of learning more about the mysterious but vital alien species that provides the fuel which keeps intergalactic society capable of travel. But once it works, there's more to the language and the Star Eaters themselves than meets the eye... Have to recommend this one because I read it and it immediately launched itself up as one of my favorites next to Murderbot and Project Hail Mary (both of which I cannot really recommend anymore because they are too mainstream as of this year, ha). If you like linguistics, mysteries, and a bit of creeping horror to the space opera scene. It's a really good book.

One of the best things about being a writer is thinking of something small you can add to your work that’s just. Devastating. Like you’re sitting there going. Oh. That would be diabolical. People would get really riled up about that. Exquisite. Let’s do it.

Hey! I sent an ask before but I don't think it went through but I made a Tales of the tmnt (mutant mayhem) version of your LFLS au and I didn't want to keep making lore for it if it made you uncomfortable at all.

I just didn't want to use your story and out it in a other iteration of tmnt if i didn't get your permission first, I did make the post for it like a week ago but if you don't like the idea of someone using your story just say so and I will take it down.

I don't mind it! I consider a new story using the same tropes a common thing in fandom spaces and encourage the creativity. I would maybe request you not to put it in my tag / give it a new name since it is kind of its own thing, but citing the inspiration on main posts about it would be appreciated.

I love it when fan fiction writers are like: “ah shit, this was meant to be one part but I started writing it and now it has to be three”. Like the fanfic is happening to them and not being created by them.

on “the blond,” “the older man,” and other crimes against third-person limited

You know that thing where a story is written in tight third person limited — we’re meant to be inside someone’s head, seeing the world through their thoughts — and then suddenly the narration says “the blond frowned” or “the shorter woman sighed” about a person the POV character knows really well?

That’s called antonomasia — using a descriptive label instead of a name. And it’s fine when we’re talking about strangers: “the cashier handed her the receipt,” “the tall guy blocked the door.” The POV character doesn’t know their names, and we just need a quick way to tell people apart.

But the moment it’s used for someone the POV character already knows, it breaks immersion. Because that’s not how our minds work. We don’t think “the older man smiled at me.” We think “Mark smiled.” Or maybe “my boss” if that relationship matters in the moment.

Third person limited means the narration sits inside someone’s perception. Their inner monologue is the story’s voice. So when you switch from “Mark smiled” to “the blond smiled,” you’ve pulled the camera away from their mind and turned it into an outside shot.

If you want to create distance or irritation, you can do it on purpose —

“The idiot from accounting emailed again.”

That’s character voice. That’s judgment. That works.

But otherwise?

As soon as your POV character knows someone’s name, use it. While we do tend to worry about repetitions, names rarely register as such to the readers.

If you need variety for rhythm, use relational or emotional identifiers that make sense in their head: her friend, his partner, their teacher, the person they loved.

Because inside someone’s thoughts, there are no “blonds” or “brunettes.”

There are only people they know.

I think fanfiction as a medium is different enough from mainstream literature in the tools it offers writers that it's a shame that it's not talked about more often. And it's not me saying "fanfic is better than books xD" because that sort of mindset is a symptom of people who aren't particularly well read in either medium. I'm just speaking of like... The little things you get to do with a fanfic that you genuinely can't really do in an original story.

I had a big fanfic in a previous fandom where one of the big reveals was the involvement of a kind of infamous villain, whose presence was built up to and foreshadowed through the whole fic until his reveal without ever mentioning his name, so that the name drop would be a gut punch. It worked especially well because of who the villain was and his presence in that fandom space specifically (it's very complicated) and if it was an original story this reveal wouldn't work at all the way it was written in the fic. Because if you don't have a predisposition to think about that character and his relationship to the hero in a very specific way, then just seeing their name won't do much to you; the reveal and the recontextualisation it pushes upon you hinges on your previous knowledge of the source material.

I think it's an interesting tool fanfic authors are given. One of my favorite fanfic of all time is partially a re-imagining of its source material's canon, and something it does is introduce antagonists much earlier in the story or deepen npcs' stories. It then works to evoke a tragic irony that again wouldn't work if you didn't know the source material, and it's something the author obviously has a lot of fun with.

You could call it cheap or a crutch and I mean, yeah, sure, it is a little bit: the fanfic relies on previously established emotional bonds and stakes to achieve its goal, and in some cases it saves the author from having to 'properly' build up its stakes. But I think it's INTERESTING that it has that tool at its disposal. I think it's a fun thing to play with and I think these built in expectations and emotional bonds are especially why I find story driven aus in particular to be fascinating in the amount of ways you can play with them. You know??

Looking for other writer's takes on this; how do you best showcase a character who uses multiple pronouns in prose?

I feel like I would prefer to pick one set of pronouns per chapter for clarity in the prose voice but the dialogue would still consistently vary.

It seems to get very confusing very fast if you have multiple characters switching pronouns in an action heavy scene without dragging it down with names. English does not have the best grasp on reflexive pronoun identification, either.
