But at my best, I am the worst — it’s a curse.
One of my favorite bits of creepy Ala Mhigo lore… and it even helps confirm the existence of something akin to Vagrant Story’s Undercity hidden far below the capital.
And as we’ll soon find out in 4.1′s main scenario, this wasn’t even the only place where Theodoric confined people he perceived as threats! Still, the mental image this lore evokes is easily up there with some of the worst things the King of Ruin is known for.

CUL 70 quest & Gyr Abanian side-quest spoilers ahead!
Despite not having any actual Ala Mhigan recipes, we do get to learn a little bit about dishes that are made in areas and towns in Gyr Abania! I like to try to discuss/interpret the lore, so I’ll also expand on my thoughts/views of the information. (This got pretty long thanks to that, so everything’s under the cut!)

@kukurubean this is splendid! It’s not much, but I’d also like to add what I was able to find out about Ala Mhigan diet and miscellaneous from Fishing lore!
Gyr Abanian Trout: “Anyone who’s ever been to Gyr Abania is likely to have seen one, and even more likely to have eaten one, as this particular trout is deemed a local specialty.”
Abalathian Pipira: “This pipira’s saltwater habitat seasons it to perfection, soliciting no assistance on the part of the cook other than to slap the fish on the grill, making for an unmistakable taste of Ala Mhigo the first time, and every time.”
Salt Cellar: “An ashen-shelled snail found throughout Loch Seld. Cooking the gastropods in their shells with garlic and herbs is the preferred method of consumption. While a few are to be found in the Loch Seld, one is far more likely to come across this swirly shell atop the tables of Ala Mhigo, where the cellar’s abode is routinely repurposed into a salt shaker.”
White Sturgeon: “While fishmongers may carry cuts of this sturgeon, it is the caviar, marinated to perfection in the brine of Loch Seld, that is worth its weight in gold.”
Salt Urchin: “The whitening effect of salt-absorption is favored by natural selection amid the saline climes, and the seasoning effect is favored by Highlanders, who enjoy the urchins raw.”
Bonus Interesting Fish:
Mercenary Crab: “This free-lance, armed with a sturdy helm and a pair of pincers, was once consulted for tactical strategy, as oracles invoked plastromancy to divine routes to victory from the lines beneath its carapace.”
Deemster: “Custom once dictated that in order to call oneself a freelance proper, the sellsword first had to reel in this fish of prodigious proportions.”
King’s Mantle: “Very few species of octopus have been discovered in Loch Seld, but those that have - such as the king’s mantle - are magnificently monstrous. The sky-colored shine of its tapetum evokes the proud image of Ala Mhigan regalia, but the cape is only as good as the king, and the fish was unduly subjected to symbolic slaughter following the fall of Theodoric.”
Reblogging for extra additions! Thank you both for doing this!
“Be silent,” they say. We shout. “Sit down,” they demand. We stand. “Go away,” they order. We remain. “Give up,” they command. We fight. “We won,” they cheer. We’ll see. We’re stronger than their hate. We’re stronger than our fear.
