Either way, we win.
I do not want the ai overview. I want to read six wikipedia pages as god intended.
I guess the Department of War now includes the Ministry of Silly Walks as well
... why invoke the MoSW when this is literally an entirely different Python sketch?
This looks like a fucking parody post, or an edgy edit, but it’s 100% official real Flintstones.
Clarification: I don’t hate this book, I love it, it’s amazing. It’s just that taking a step back and looking it out of context is still really funny. Especially the line “We participated in a genocide, Barney.”
ok but imagine them in their cartoon forms saying this dialogue i’m
can we have some context to this, perhaps?
Bedrock is having a mayoral election. One of the candidates is a violent war mongering asshole that riles people up against the lizard people. This reminds Fred and Barney of their time in the army.
Back then the father of said violent candidate was riling people up against the “tree people”. Fred, Barney, and other soldiers fought what they believed to be a defensive measure against the tree people. Turns out, it was actually an invasion, in order to kill off the tree people and take over their forest to build Bedrock.
That’s what Fred means when he says he and Barney participated in a genocide. They literally did.
(Extra fun fact, Barney adopted a tree person baby after the war, and his son Bamm-Bamm is the last tree person.)
just fucking read it

There are a lot of interesting things about this post but the AK-47 shaped spear is what really got me
This is just as wild with the context
Some of my favorite moments in the series
From the foreword to 2021 print of the comic.
By Mark Russell and Steve Pugh!
For more context, I really enjoy this interview they did:

This post blew my mind, and I just checked these out from the library! I’m so excited to read them.

The Flintstones is a comic book series based on the 1960–1966 animated sitcom created by Hanna-Barbera. The series was published by DC Comics as part of the Hanna-Barbera Beyond comic book initiative. The 12-issue limited series was written by Mark Russell and drawn by Steve Pugh, with the first issue published on June 6, 2016, and the twelfth and final issue published on June 7, 2017.
The story takes place 100,000 years in the past in the town of Bedrock, one of the first civilizations to be established after tribes grew up with hunter-gatherers. Fred Flintstone is one of the top employees at the Slate Rock and Gravel Company, providing for his wife, Wilma, and his middle school daughter Pebbles. Wilma is an aspiring artist who primarily focuses on handprints to reflect upon her upbringing, while Pebbles is a relatively intelligent student with an interest in music and science.
Fred and his best friend, Barney Rubble, participated in the Bedrock Wars, where they and other soldiers were deceived by the conqueror, Mordok the Destroyer, into committing genocide against the Tree People and burning down their home to establish Bedrock. Barney and his wife Betty raised the infant sole survivor of the Tree People as their son, Bamm-Bamm. The “Loyal Order of Water Buffalos Lodge” from the original show is instead depicted as a veterans group the two attend to help them deal with the trauma of the ordeal.

Iran is carrying out attacks targeting US personnel instead of infrastructure due to a recent US strike on a random IRGC conscript dorm in the middle of nowhere, killing many sleeping soldiers.

one of my favorite this american life segments of late is about the people who played orchestra pit for phantom of the opera on broadway and how, like, a sizeable majority of them had literally been playing the show since it opened in 1988 (on broadway. I know it opened in 86 on the west end, you random pedants, but I am specifically talking about broadway musicians) because their contracts stipulated that they'd have jobs throughout the show's entire run... but nobody anticipated that phantom would become the longest-running broadway show of all time.
and none of these people wanted to walk away from a guaranteed job, so very few of them ever quit. they just kept doing the same show eight nights a week... for twenty or thirty years... and by the time it finally closed last year most of these musicians (who had been working together for DECADES) hated each other and really really fucking loathed phantom. I can't stop thinking about it. it's indescribably hellish to imagine but also the funniest thing I've ever heard in my life.
can you imagine.
[ID: excerpt from an article reading: One of my favorite stories, which should drive anyone who has every played in a band crazy-- there’s this bassoon player who has sat next to the same clarinet player since 1988. She’s convinced he plays half a note4 flat on every note he’s every played. He denies this. /]
Here's the link to the full transcript. An absolute goldmine. The section on Phantom of the Opera starts in Act 2.
