“So how are we feeling today?,” Owen asked, pulling back the curtain to the patient sitting on the bed in the middle of the emergency room. “Tell me what’s going on.” It was his duty as a nurse to get as much information as possible for the doctor and he found that this was the best place to start.
It was her fourth day at the hospital. She was supposed to be discharged any time now, but her condition didn't seem to be improving the least bit, in the last few days. After her stroke she still had been an awful lot of difficulty controlling bodily functions — more she was, theoretically, supposed to have —, which caused Ethan to worry. Usually, patients with a case like hers were discharged after the sixth day of hospitalization, but judging by her slow-paced recovery, Ethan could easily see her staying there for another week. She was one of those patients who need close watching over, hence, Ethan was keeping a watch on the elder woman even during his time off. And there he was again, after having just performed a surgery, in the old woman's room. What was nurse Burke doing there, though? He was not her assigned nurse... "She's still having difficulties to talk." He said, before approaching the nurse to whisper, "Her recovery's been slow..." Ethan explained, making sure his voice was low, as he knew that some patients became oversensitive when hearing that their healing process was taking a little too long. "What are you doing here, by the way? Campbell was her assigned nurse."

Cassidy didn’t go to pools. Cassidy go to bookstores and cafe’s late at night to read. But somehow someway she found herself at the gym and going directly to the pool to relax for a while before heading off to the Cat and Shadow for the night. When she entered the pool area, she saw a guy in the pool….a really, really, very fine and hot guy in the pool…..and like she was let out of a cage, like her mama would say, she made a very abrupt squeaky like noise and instantly covered her mouth.
“Uh….just someone who was staring and shouldn’t have, and now she’s leaving-oh my gosh, look at the time,” she said quickly as she started to turn around and leave, but ended up knocking some things down in the process. “You…you didn’t hear that…or see anything weird…..ignore me!” Cassidy called out as she started to pick up her mess.
In a manifestation of slight surprise, Ethan's eyes widened for a brief moment. A woman was watching him? His signature inquisitive look took ahold of his expression immediately; eyes narrow, head tilted to one side and lips pressed against each other as if demanding an explanation. When she dropped the items that she was carrying, he noticed that the answer he expected wouldn't come anytime soon unless he helped her. Therefore, Ethan swam to the tiled edge of the pull, hauled himself out of the water and made his way to the woman who hastily tried to pick up the result of her clumsiness.
Not even having bothered to dry himself up, Ethan knelt down beside her and started to gather the fallen objects, trying his best not to damage any of her belongings with his wet touch in the process. "What were you doing?" He finally inquired, after all the objects were handed to the stranger. Some of the fallen belongings including swim-related objects, which caused him to figure that she had been meaning to go into the pool as well. But why had she changed her mind so suddenly? Was it just his presence? He was well aware of how some people reacted to his dark aura, they hadn't even interacted... He decided to quit hypothesizing and wait for an answer.

Jesus H. Christ, were the words that mulled over Kendra’s line of thought as she raced towards the girls’ locker room of the 24-hour-gym which she had frequented. Though it wasn’t uncharacteristic for a few things to slip her mind — the current one being a Rolex watch that was given to her as a graduation gift — it was rare for her to skip out of her apartment in the dead of night, with only her pajamas and a tote bag in tow, and to hail an Uber that lead her to the establishment. In Kendra’s defense, an eight-thousand-dollar watch on the possible verge of being stolen by the gym owner or someone else entirely was cause for due alarm.
Finally reaching her destination only to find a smattering of her rather unclean gymwear, her eyes widened in agitation, only to find the watch at the very bottom of the locker. Jesus Christ, she knew her messiness knew no bounds, but nothing like this. Attempting to rearrange her outfits, she didn’t realize that the watch had fallen out of the drawer. “Fuck!” she bellowed out in panic. “Okay, okay, no harm done…” she uttered as she took the watch from the ground, relatively unscathed.
It was at this moment she’d heard another voice calling in her direction, her eyes widening as she realized she was not alone. Walking towards the source of the voice, the Rolex watch still in her hand, she was met with a figure by the pool, worry evident in his features. “Nothing to worry about here, just a damsel not in distress.” She forced out a courteous smile.
The panting shadow coming from nowhere took sudden hold of his attention; but despite his efforts, all that he could grasp was that the incognito individual was a female in what seemed as a big haste. As a matter of fact, the velocity with which she entered the woman's locker room was a little too intense, even for him... What in the world might have happened to that woman to leave her in such a hurry? Naturally, he was preoccupied, as anyone would be in a situation as that one. A woman comes rushing into a gym in the middle of the night, a time where there's no need for hurry, especially in a gym, unless...
Ethan immediately hauled himself out of the swimming pool and made his way towards the lady's locker room, stopping just two steps ahead of the door, prepared to make a run for it, if necessary. His body, still dripping from the swim, leaving the floor behind him soaked.
It must be an EMERGENCY. He could only assume the worst. As a doctor, one learns to do so. They learn to measure no efforts when it comes to helping, to saving a life. He asks once again, though now trying to discover what might have happened.
In spite of the adrenaline rush, the tension, the blood cruising rapidly through his body, he maintains his cool. Other ability learned in med school. To always be calm. However impatient or rushed one is, they should keep their cool at all costs. After all, there was someone else's life at stake.
He let out an immense sigh of relief the moment she walked out of the locker room. He looked down at the puddle that had formed beneath him as if warning her to be careful (never saying a word, though). "Are you okay?" He asked, his voice didn't indicate the slightest bit of worry. There was no need for it anymore, anyway. He walked back to the pool and let his legs dangle over the water, as he took a seat on the border.

Neon just needed to clear his mind after the day he had. The blond was trying to figure out his life in Boston and at the same time was having a creative block. All of his ideas were not appealing to him, everything sounded like shit. Good thing he did have three videos upfront or his plans to get NeonOverloadr back on track would probably go down the toilet. He decided to go for a swim, that new 24/7 gym had a swimming pool and everything. He would go, ask for a trial or whatever and if that didn’t work he would enjoy the hot water anyway by finding a way in, it wasn’t going to be the first time he would done something like this. At that late hour, he would probably be the only one there and would be easier to do so. The blond got his bag and started jogging, Madonna’s Hung Up blasting on his earphones. He arrived at the monumental building and casually entered the front door. He charmed the front desk attendent and went inside with him for a quick tour. The place was deserted, as the blond guessed it. He entered the lockeroom and changed into his trunks. A smile of satisfaction surfacing on his lips as the blond boy walked to one of the sides of the pool. He got up in one of the jumping plataforms and was ready to leap when the sound of a grave voice distracted him. Instead of a perfect hop, Neon entered the water in a kind of what could be described as frog type of jump. “Man, you ruined my jump.” He said out loud as he surfaced the water to no one in particular since he couldn’t see exactly where the man was.
He knew he had heard something. Ethan was certain of it as the light of the day. But why did he not have a response immediately? It was impossible that he had been hearing things that weren't there. It could not be that. After all, he had not had anything to drink earlier. He was clean. He had been clean for the past week. And yet, his impatience, added to his dubious sense of sanity caused him to wonder whether or not there really was someone there with him. No, he was not scared. That would hardly be the word to describe it; Ethan was never scared. Though the lack of an immediate response caused him to question the reality of the strange noise.
But then came the masculine figure, cannonballing from one of the dive platforms and into the water in the clumsiest of ways as though he had been caught by surprise, just as well, and interrupted mid-jump. Ethan swallowed hard, worried for the man's safety. As a doctor, that was always his primal instinct. The pool was many feet deep but that never necessarily meant that one would survive such a gawky jump. Ethan couldn't help but think the worst... He decided to approach the figure that had only half a second ago fallen into the pool. Tension took ahold of his brain as he readied himself for a dive...
The man came up. Ethan's movements came to a halt and he let out a sigh, heavily charged with the sheerest relief. He was alive. But well? He quickly scanned the man's body for any traces of harm from the fall. Blood or some sort of wound. Nothing. Thank... God?
Noticing that the man was fine, his mind was allowed into other territories, such as the one of being irritated by the fact that he was not alone anymore. What was that man doing there, anyway?
At the complaint of ruining his Olympic dive, Ethan rolled his eyes and started to swim away from the blond. "Perhaps, if you had been more attentive of your surroundings you wouldn't have been so startled." His voice was low and calm, but his patience was lacking. When walking into a place, he would always double-check his surroundings, a trait derived from his untrusting nature.

There was nothing in the world that would keep Jensen from helping his out his brother. Even to the point that would spoil Jensen’s life in someway. Of course, Jensen was always quite vocal about his displeasure in Tony’s regular activities. One of those regular activities that seem to be going on nowadays would be running from the police.
Fortunately, the brothers were equip with military shaped bodies, luck and a lock pick. So even if the back door to the pool was locked tight, it was no match for the brothers. Anthony pulled open the door and charged through with complete utter ignorance about what he was about to run into. Jensen, on the other hand, pulled the door shut gently and watched Tony stumble over.
“Are you fucking nuts.” Jensen snapped at him in Spanish as he hobbled over to pick up his disoriented brother. “Pick yourself up and let’s get out of here. I cannot believe that you would –” Jensen looked up to see the bright lights on in the building they thought to be empty. “Somebody is here.” His language in the last statement quickly changed to German. “Hide you stupid ape.” Jensen instructed kicking his brother behind a box. Before he knew it, his brother was gone from the room and sneaking away form the main pool area. Jensen on the other hand, intended on getting caught. Therefore, he rambled on in his language without even the notion that he realized that somebody could be in the building.
His swimming to the opposite side of the pool was suddenly interrupted as he heard a voice. Was that the intruder answering his question? No. The person's tone was far from sufficiently loud to be heard clearly from whatever distance they were speaking. They were talking to someone else, he assumed... Having one person go into the pool at night was strange enough, but two?! That was simply too unlikely. He kept his silence, attempting to hear whatever the two (or heaven knows how many more people...?) were whispering to each other. But suddenly all noises ceased, replaced by the quiet sound of the water, the tiny waves, previously caused by his own movements, crashing against Ethan's torso.
He subtly climbed out of the water through the cold, metallic ladder on one side of the pool, trying to maintain the room's silence. His movements were like a cat's in the night, his steps, so delicate against the concrete that it seemed as though he were performing a surgery. Even his breath had been pushed to slow down to a point where it was so quiet that it was practically inaudible. He took his towel from a wooden bench, dried himself up as fast as possible (the sound of the dripping water could give him away) and continued on with his walk. CURIOSITY and preoccupation ate at him. Ethan was desperate to know what the intruder's intentions were.
As he made his way past the locker room, Ethan noticed a shadow on the ground. A masculine frame, clearly. Just... standing there? "Who's there?" His voice echoed through the room once again. He didn't wait for a reply, he continued on walking until he saw him. The man. He seemed to be alone. But he couldn't be. Ethan could swear he had heard him talking. Quietly, he just stared at the man, eyes narrow as if waiting for an explanation.

Split custody wasn’t all terrible, but for Nadia it felt that way. Her daughter was her world and on the days that Addy was with her father and not her, she wasn’t honestly sure what to do with herself. Of course most of the time she wound up staying late at work or bringing something home to work on in her home office. That day she had stayed late and finished everything she could think to do during that time, and once she was done she just didn’t feel the urge to sleep, despite the late hour. The editor took a deep breath and pinched her temple as she wracked her mind for something productive she could do since she could feel insomnia’s presence and the inevitable pain in the ass getting to sleep would be. As she sat there in thought, the idea of popping by her gym came to mind. It was open around the clock and besides, she hadn’t been working out as regularly as she planned she would when she first enrolled. She gathered her things and made her way out and through the parking garage.
Once arrived at the gym, Nadia first did a mile on the treadmill before doing a few leg workouts and using the rowing machine for a while as well. By the time she was done she was covered in sweat and what sounded better than anything was a dip in the pool. Not knowing if it was still open, she decided to chance it and go anyway. First showering and then changing into her one piece (which she wore to hide the stretchmarks on her abdomen) before she made her way down and opened the door into the humid pool area. She hadn’t expected anyone else to be there herself, and raised an eyebrow at the site of him as she walked in with a towel draped over her shoulder. “Just another person that’s here instead of asleep.” She answered, her expression remaining neutral as the words left her lips. “Did I startle you?” She asked as she stepped into the water.
He analyzed the feminine shape that gradually approached him in silence, paying close attention to her demeanors and movements, as Ethan usually did. He realized that he had never seen her at the gym, before. He would have remembered her, otherwise... The stranger's enigmatic gaze called out to him the moment their eyes crossed paths, immediately imprinting itself in his mind. Ethan crossed his arms over his bare chest, eyes in a slightly narrow, almond-like shape demonstrating a detectable amount of curiosity, questioning who's and why's. Usually, the night attendees would limit their activities to the upper floor where the gym machines were. And Ethan had thought to be the last one to arrive at the gym that night, for when he walked through the establishment's doors, he had noticed that he was practically alone, with the exception one sleepy receptionist and a bored-out-of-her-mind personal trainer.
"Not really," Ethan answered. His tone was subtle as a professional thief robbing a home in the middle of the night. "I'm just not used to meeting people down here, at this hour." He finally admitted. His low voice echoed once again through the long, wide swimming pool. He enjoyed the silence, the isolation, the sensation of being the only weightless body floating without anyone around. Without anyone to bother him. But perhaps, if he were lucky, she wouldn't be a bother... In fact, his first impression led him to even believe that she was interesting enough to be worth his time. Hence, he attempted to engage in a conversation, "And why are you not asleep?"
gabeainsworth:
Truth be told, Gabe didn’t mind the late night hours, so long as he got the job done. He hadn’t devoted that much time of his life to deliver half-assed assignments and to let his team down, which it was why he would, most of the times, be one of the first of his time to arrive and one of the last to leave. Tactical missions depended on his skills behind a computer and knowing that there were people counting on him to get the job done only fired him up even more. Although it was pretty late at night when he had left the FBI office, Gabe still had to hit the gym before heading home. Not that Gabriel was going to lift weight at this hour of the night, but he needed to do something to blow off some steam, for the simple fact that he worked on a schedule that helped keeping his brain in check; so, with that in mind, he didn’t hesitate in going straight to the pool for a few laps.
He recognized Ethan’s voice asking who was there the minute he stepped into the pool section and he let out a soft snort. “Your conscience.” Gabe joked, even though he kept an even face. “It’s been a while since we’ve last spoken, Ethan.” He hang his towel by the hangers then moved to the shower to get himself wet, before jumping into the pool.
“How is it going, man?”
His mind was shortly invaded by a slight sensation of pride upon himself for the accurate guess of his companion's identity. Gabriel Ainsworth. The computer scientist with whom Ethan had become friends, some time ago, during yet another nightly gym session (which was, mostly, due to their schedules, the only time that they had available). Yes, Ethan was a man that enjoyed the solitude and quiet provided by the late hours, yet, Gabriel's presence, surprisingly, didn't at all bother him. He even grew to actively like it, as time passed. And, eventually, the two started to become close.
Slightly bemused by his friend's quick-witted reply, Ethan shook his head and let out one of his signature muffled chuckles, his usual response to his friends' eventual humorous comments (laughing was a reaction so rare when it came to Ethan that, in situations as those, a laugh would seem unnatural). He leaned against one corner of the pool and watched as the other made his way in, figuring, secretly, that someone's company –– especially Gabriel's –– would do him some good. He needed his mind taken away for a while, his brain entertained off from thoughts he desired to avoid... "Same old, same old. My head's piled with work-related issues, as always. How about yourself?"
angelalcott:
Growing up in Martha’s Vineyard hadn’t been the easiest existence for Angela. Even besides the abusive home life, being the only black face in her private school classes was a too often reminder that in some ways, at least, she didn’t belong. Having Athira in the neighborhood helped some, of course, being the only two kids of colour in their gated community, but that friendship hadn’t done anything for her when swim class had come around. Angela didn’t like water, or rather, she didn’t like weightlessness, the floating in place, feeling completely powerless. For a child with control issues, swimming was less a fun pastime and more an exercise in futility. She’d looked at the pool like yet another reminder that she was different from the other kids, her blonde classmates who whooped as they cannonballed into the deep end. She could be gotten an excuse note, real or, more likely considering her deeply flawed relationship with her parents, forged. But sitting on the sidelines during open swim would only serve to make it more obvious. Black people can’t swim rang in her ears, stereotypes mocking her from all the corners of her mind every time she went within ten feet of a diving board. The only way to make the voices stop was to face them, right? So she’d suited up, stepped into the pool, and learned to swim.
Or, rather, she learned how not to drown. She assumed that would suffice.
Getting older hadn’t instilled in Angela any great love of water. She’d moved to Los Angeles for her career, not for the ocean with crashing waves that still sounded like mockery to her ears. She still didn’t like to be weightless, didn’t find it relaxing or restorative to give up control of her body to a current. But beyond that, she wasn’t so biased against swimming as to deny its health benefits, and her new gym had a pool that was open 24/7 - perfect for her hectic schedule. Plus, she’d never really advanced past the “not drowning” stage of swimming, and it was nice to think that no one would be around to see her flailing and trying not to get her hair wet. But as Angela entered the pool area, already in her swimsuit and flip-flops padding softly against the tiles as she approached the edge, she could hear the tell-tale sounds of laps. So she wasn’t the only one who’d had this idea, after all. She cleared her throat as the voice called out to her, rounding the last corner as she replied, “I’m not a ghost or a bath towel thief or something, I assure you. Just a fellow swimmer.” Her eyes widened as she stared down at the man in the pool, tracing quickly over what she could see of his form. “… Ethan?” she murmured, almost subconsciously. Broader shoulders, yes, and he hadn’t recently nicked himself shaving, but the shape of his face and his eyes were unmistakably Ethan White. “Wow. This is quite the coincidence,” she breathed, the corners of her mouth working themselves up into the best media-ready smile she could manage at this hour.
Should Ethan have been given 7 billion guesses to try and figure out the identity of his nightly companion, he would most likely, have said her name in his desperate last chance. Of course, he would never have lasted through all those rounds, for his lack of patience would, certainly, have made him walk away after the tenth or eleventh try. But if he did, she would most certainly be the last person in the world he would assume to be there, in that swimming pool...
Angela Alcott; a face so familiar yet so... distant. The dark-skinned beauty that had been, in a remote past, the first person to conquer his, then, young, naïve heart. And that had, with time, become but a ghostly entity who would, every now and then, be mentioned in the conversations shared between Ethan and her brother, Garrett. The two men were still close friends who would, very often, meet. Their friendship had endured Ethan's parting of their small hometown, their college years, and even their hectic adult lives. However, the same could not be said about Angela. After Ethan's departure of Martha's Vineyard, the two's connection slowly began to fade into oblivion. Their calls would be, each time less frequent; they would hardly ever find the time to see each other, and eventually, the two, once, childhood friends became estranged. Many years later, they would, once in a blue moon, cross paths while roaming their current city, as they had more than one common acquaintance and lived in the same neighborhood. Yet, they had never engaged in an actual conversation. Their encounters would consist of a mediocre exchange of cold looks and slight greeting nods as though they were just one step away from being two complete strangers to each other.
But that occasion was not as most times they met. That particular night was, as she had very well put it, "quite the coincidence". He chose to believe in that. COINCIDENCES. As a man of science, Ethan couldn't allow himself to believe in such a thing as a magical, higher power playing puppet master with the entire Universe. And yet, sometimes, it felt as though odds were too slim to be considered coincidental. The operation room would, more often than not, be a locale where he'd witness phenomena like those, which would make him question the nature of his beliefs and if all those peculiar situations could all be narrowed down to the concept of coincidence. That (despite the unusual location) was another of those situations. Angela didn't swim. He could clearly recall that and the fact that he never really understood her motive for not enjoying the sport he liked the most. But the point was, she was hardly ever near a pool when they were younger, and yet, there she was... That specific night. "Angela." His expression denoted slight surprise and confusion, as he tried to maintain his naturally low tone. His eyes were wider than the usual, clearly very attentive of her. His heart-rate, slowing down. His curiosity, hover, breaking through the roof. "Thought you didn't swim."
dilldexter:
“Don’t shoot!” Dill said, holding his hands up with a genuinely concerned look on his face before it would quickly shift into amusement, a light laugh leaving his lips as he lowered his hands. “It’s-a-me, Mario,” he continued, trying to mimic the video game character’s voice as he approached the other male by the edge of the pool, the sound of his slippers hitting the cement making quiet echoes as he dragged them along. Soon enough, he removed them from his feet and sat down by the steps, submerging his legs into the water as he held on to the handrails, carefully watching the expression on Ethan’s face. “Don’t look so surprised. I wasn’t stalking you,” he told him, swinging his feet back and forth, making small swishes in the water as he did. “Well… okay, maybe I did a little. But you weren’t answering your phone and you mentioned once that you liked to go here sometimes, and as the good friend I am, I remember those things.” A pause. “And also I used Find My Friends.”
Keeping his silence, Ethan waited for an explanation that came nearly immediately. His primarily inert expression began to change; his eyes were slightly narrowed, his head, tilted to a side, brows furrowed, and his mouth was a tiny, quiet gap. "And why were you calling me at this hour?" Which hour was that, even? The question suddenly popped into his mind like corn. Hours flew by when he was at the gym. Time seemed so... relative when he was in the pool by himself that he would easily lose track of it. Some days, hours would go by without him barely noticing their passing as he lost himself in endless minutes of philosophical contemplation.
"Unless anyone you know has suffered a brain trauma..." He started again with yet another one of his sarcastic remarks, "Which is clearly not the case. I can't really see why you would need to speak to me." Truth was, he found that Dylan's actions were somewhat an invasion of his privacy. Yet, then again, Dylan was not the one at fault for Ethan's not turning off his 'Find Friends' app on his iPhone. He took note of that. The second he walked out of that swimming pool, he was to disable that setting. "And, by the way, if you recall correctly, you might remember that I have mentioned that I liked coming here alone." He pointed out, his voice low, as he leaned against one corner of the pool. "Still, here you are. So, please, enlighten me on why you've bothered to track me down and come here."
dilldexter:
He sucked in his teeth at the other’s reply, making a wincing gesture as he said, “Ooh, burn on me,” the sarcasm he tried matching softened by the chuckle that followed his words soon after. He leaned back against his seat as he continued to tap away at his phone, trying to guess one wrong password after another, until Ethan spoke again. His jaw hung slack at Ethan’s response, a genuine look of shock clear in his expression as he lowered his phone towards the table. “What the fuck? No way.” He leaned forward, straightening his back. “So you mean Cosmo magazine’s been lying to me all this time?”
An eye roll was his primary response to Dylan's mention of the Cosmopolitan magazine. Those unamused gestures were so customary to Ethan that he had already been told that if he kept that attitude his eyes might get stuck behind its lids. Another medical lie that he pleasantly debunked. "This might come as a shock to you, but working for Cosmopolitan doesn't require a medical degree. In fact, I don't even think it requires an IQ higher than 60." He was not an avid female-directed magazine reader, but he was well aware that most of their contents were words lacking any depth, published with the simple intent of attracting readers with a lot of time in their hands. "There are a plethora of medical lies you've been told all your life, you'd be surprised."
garrctts:
In due time, Garrett mused. Not that he would especially bear a grudge towards Ethan for his less-than-stellar time management. Unlike his office job the other man’s hours were irregular or inconsistent, which often led to their nightly escapades being pushed in order to accommodate him. It didn’t especially bother him, seeing as often he’d already start his alcohol run without the other. Depending on how far gone he was, time became extremely relative, and as such didn’t really mind the other’s absence.
Today was not one of those days, however. His therapist had recommended that he cut back on alcohol before fully taking it out his palate, lest he experience immediate withdrawal. As such, he awaited the arrival of his drinking buddy with some impatience, his legs already restlessly moving as he sat on his usual bar seat and saw the alcohol being passed to and fro. Tempted though he was to order, his mind willed against it, and such it was with much relief that he finally saw Ethan walking towards him, mumbling an apology and ordering his usual and all. “Not to worry, man. I’m used to it. So used that maybe I’ll be arriving at the same time the next time we hang too.” He chuckled. Mirroring the other’s gesture the bartender was quick to give him a shotglass containing his usual poison, a Lagavulin whiskey. He downed it in one go before adding, “Unless you want to hear about me making copies and sitting at my desk for eight hours, I suggest you recount your day at work.” He smiled.
Ethan's curiosity was immediately triggered by the fact that Garrett didn't have a glass resting on the bar before him, which was something that the doctor had noticed the moment that he first approached his friend. Ethan knew that, due to his frequent delays, Garrett would eventually have had one (or some few) drinks prior to his arrival. For some reason, however, that night he seemed to have waited. "Thanks for waiting, by the way." Ethan complimented, mildly expecting that that would generate some explanation. It didn't at all bother him that Garrett would start drinking without him, after all, Ethan could really take more than a little too long to show up. And although he really appreciated Garrett's patience, the fact that he wasn't drinking did raise some questions.
He let it go, knowing that if anything, at all, was going on, there would be future evidence. And if that were the case, he would bring up the subject. "You know, I've always imagined that being an important journalist meant receiving all these mind-blowing updates on your phone, coming from all over the world, at every second..." Aside from his drinking buddy, the only insight that Ethan had in the journalistic field was what the media projected; the agitated offices, the hasty personnel running desperately in all directions, interns desperate for a scoop... And, most times, Garrett proved his somewhat naïve fantasy to be quite delusional. "Blame it on Zodiac and Nightcrawler. They make journalism seem too exciting." It wasn't boring either, at least didn't look boring. But that was Ethan's outside perspective talking again. Yet, he'd rather stick to the hospital, which was what he thought was much more interesting. "There was this guy today," With a gulp, he finished his drink. Two knocks on the table. Another one came immediately. "Got shot over six times. Very messy." He refrained from discussing the gory details, "Got a bullet stuck in his head in this way... I swear that if it were lodged the slightest millimeter to the either side, he'd have died." And of course, should Ethan not have had the proper care, he would have killed the man, right on the operation table. "Situations like these make me question my beliefs every time..." He was used to critical conditions like those. And still, he'd find himself constantly questioning his agnosticism.

to alice suddenly all the flashback came to her head. the image of their break-up kept replaying over, & over again in her mind. she could even feel so sick with it, wanting puke. but when reality rang back, she licked her own lips to wet them. what the fuck is he doing in this city ? one of the reasons to move out, it was to forget the past, or the bad memories of it. she didn’t want be in touch with him. therefore they hadn’t contact with each other since then.. dominique was confused the reactions of both adults. alice didn’t want to show her weakness to him , she was tough woman ( or trying to be tough ). but a fireworks of emotions stroke her of all the feelings at once.
she cleared her throat when he said hey, now crounching down to get the size of her daughter, looking at both cereals she has in hands. ❛ Mon amour ( my love ) … We can bring these two okay ? ❜ alice was educating her daughter in two languages english & french. she kissed the tip of the nose of her dominique, & the little girl embraced her mother & gave a quick peck on her mother’s lips. alice picked up the cereals putting in the cart, standing up straight & she put on the shelf the cereal she dropped seconds prior. of course she heard his comment about being sorry. as if sorry was enough after everything he did to her. she was trying to erase the thoughts, but suddenly alice feels like she entered in the time machine & back for the worst memories.
❛ Mamma?! Ethan is who ? ❜ the little girl still very curious to know who was he. ❛ He is...❜ she was trying to think what to reply for her daughter but… ❛ Hmm…❜ nothing came to her mind, so… ❛ Let’s go. Bye Ethan. ❜ why she is chatting with him anyway ? she back to her cart pulling it, & dominique stayed staring at ethan. ❛ You are so weird, like mommy. ❜ she said it with a giggle, looking at the man with curiosity while alice was walking away from him. when alice realized her daughter wasn’t at her side then… ❛ Dominique KINGSLEY! ❜ she raise her voice, loud enough to make her daughter running towards her mother, waving to ethan before catching up with her mom, holding the cart too, going to anouther sector.
. . .
After that meeting, Ethan knew that that wouldn’t be the last time he would see his ex-girlfriend around town. And, unsurprisingly, he was right. The supermarket encounter was only the first of many others that would happen in the month that followed. Ethan and Alice kept running into each other everywhere. And, suddenly, department stores, bars, restaurants, and even the grocery store (again) were transformed into the coliseum of their battle of awkward stares, the stage of their choreography of premeditated steps, and the venue of their feast of words left unsaid... And Ethan was well aware that those moments would continue happening, that the tension between them would keep on increasing, unless... someone spoke up.
Perhaps that should be him. No. Not, “perhaps”, it SHOULD be him. She had nothing to apologize for, Alice shouldn’t have any regrets, as far as they relationship went. Ethan, on the other hand...
And, as someone extremely contemplative, he figured that it was the time to come clean about the matter. That he, at least, tried to explain to her why he did what he did. He owed her as much. A long enough time had passed after their break-up so that all the feelings would have worn off, they had become more mature... She was a mother now, for God’s sake. They could -- or at least should be able to -- discuss the subject as the adults they were. Therefore, he talked to her... When he caught her without Dominique, Ethan finally came forward and asked Alice if she would have coffee with him one day so that they could talk and so that he could explain his past actions, and even APOLOGIZE properly.
That day had come. It was finally there and Ethan found himself, as he rarely ever did, feeling rather insecure. He worried about her forgiveness (or the lack thereof), he worried about the confidence with which she would treat his words, he worried about her, even. But why would that dark knight be worrying about someone else’s opinion? Hell, he never did. Simple. He cared about her. Truth was, despite all the sexual tension -- and even the love -- between them had vanished, Ethan still cared about Alice for she was a single mother, who he had once loved and then abandoned. She was good, She had been good to him their entire relationship. And he still worried about her, even after their disastrous break-up.
With their meeting having been scheduled before his work hours, Ethan managed to arrive early. He wanted to cause a good impression. To make it seem clear that he had changed. But had he?
“Alice.” He greeted, handing her her favorite (tea, not coffee, as he recalled), as she approached him, after having entered the coffee house.
I think hell is something you carry around with you. Not somewhere you go.

Enrolling on that open-24-hours gym had certainly been one of the best decisions that Ethan had taken all year, last year. With his hectic schedule, it was hard to tell when he would have time to hit the gym and he couldn’t afford the luxury of having a two-hour time slot in his day, every day, at the same hours. And that was one of the few fitness centers in Boston that never closed, so he needn’t worry about punctuality anymore than he did as a doctor. Yet that was not the only reason that made him choose that specific gym. It had a huge swimming pool underground that was also open for use all night long. An avid swimmer since childhood, Ethan couldn’t decline the opportunity of having a swimming pool all to himself, all night (for that was the time in which the gym had the fewer attendees, and, usually, the time slot that he had available for exercising).
That was another one of those long nights that he spent at the gym. Swimming, or simply enjoying the calm and the silence that the lonely pool provided… It was something, he found, that helped keep his mind away from issues that he wanted to avoid, at least for the time being. And most importantly, exercising kept him away from, not just thoughts, but a habit that he had been trying to avoid, as of recent… And so, there he was, in the silent, isolated pool. After having done a few rounds, he found himself quietly contemplating… That is before his train of thought was cut off by an abrupt noise in the distance. Someone seemed to be coming by the desolated pool area... No one was supposed to be there at that hour. Well, no one except himself and himself only.
Curious, and slightly worried, he immediately asked, “Who’s there?”
