Strasbourg, France 🇫🇷
Strasbourg is a historic city located in northeastern France, near the German border. Because of its strategic location along the Rhine River, it has changed hands between France and Germany several times throughout history.
The city was originally a Roman settlement called Argentoratum around 12 BC. During the Middle Ages, Strasbourg became an important commercial and cultural center within the Holy Roman Empire. In 1681, it was annexed by France under King Louis XIV. After the Franco-Prussian War in 1871, it became part of Germany, then returned to France after World War I. It was again occupied by Germany during World War II, and finally restored to France in 1945.
Today, Strasbourg is known as the “Capital of Europe” because it hosts major European institutions such as the European Parliament and the Council of Europe.
Its historic center, called Grande Île, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for the stunning Strasbourg Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.
Strasbourg beautifully blends French and German cultures, which can be seen in its architecture, food, and language.
