Just spent 45 minutes researching what a specific street in a city smells like in october so i could write the word "damp." the word is in the final draft. it is doing its job. it cost me 45 minutes and a mild obsession with historical weather records. worth it. the word is perfect. you would not believe how hard i worked on that word.

Genuinely think the most underrated skill in writing is knowing when a scene is done. not perfect. done. there's a version of every scene that keeps going because you're scared to leave it, scared it wasn't enough, scared the next scene is harder. so you keep adding. one more line. one more beat. one more little moment. and the scene dies from it. it needed to end three paragraphs ago and you just kept talking because you didn't want to face what came next. same as real life actually.

toph casually throwing a name "kanto" should not mean much... her relationship with lin was stained bc of her refusal to reveal the father's identity. she kept him a secret for 50+ years at the cost of their relationship but then randomly said that he was some regular nice guy and we are not supposed to question it?

i love it that toph was not a good mom. but she was a good person and she would not disregard lin's feelings like that if she didn't believe the revelation would uproot their lives.

first and foremost, toph wanted freedom for herself and for lin. but she also had a sense of responsibility. zuko being the father makes sense bc once revealed, that would mean they had to take a royal responsibility and lose their freedom, so toph simply refused to claim that "right."

i feel that toph and aang became tightly aligned as adults, and probably spent the most time working together.

and i think aang influenced her a lot. to the point where she lost sight of her own path (by prioritizing authority over freedom during her republic city years). yeah, republic city was founded by zuko and aang, but it were mainly aang and toph who shaped it as the new world under their protection. it's their legacy.

interestingly, i think they understood each other the best. detachment came with ease to toph. that made her "philosophically" closer to the air nomads than even tenzin was. it's the most apparent in her decision to live in the foggy swamp where she was connected to the world while free of its' worries.

also, this might be a crack theory, but what if the vision of toph that aang saw in the swamp was actually somehow connected to the future? and it's old!toph's presence in the swamp that allowed for that connection. and maybe the swamp would show her the glimpses of aang too and that's partially why she wanted to stay there...

either way, the swamp showing toph to aang means that their connection was destined and necessary not only for the defeat of ozai but for the future beyond that.

it would be so ironic if lin was zuko's and toph kept it a secret as she wanted to ensure her freedom.

bc zuko seemed to be the best and the most present parent amongst gaang and had they been a couple, lin would have had a more involved parent and perhaps wouldn't have suffered so much for toph's attention.

i doubt that toph would have been willing to be a "royal lady" and take up spousal duties. she was definitely dedicated to her work with aang in republic city, so it's understandable why she would choose an easy way out.

but imo, zuko is the type who would have just taken up the pressure from his court and scandal onto himself and let toph live her life as she pleased, lol. but maybe toph knew it and wasn't selfish enough to burden him so much.

the concept of toph and zuko secretly yearning for one another for years while toph and sokka have an on-and-off relationship in republic city...

the concept of toph x aang understanding each other the best and having the tightest bond while working in republic city. while for katara, toph is the only woman she is attracted to.

the concept of toph being gender non-conforming and struggling with any label beyond the greatest earthbender in the world.

i really dislike it how the extent of appreciation for lin doesn't go beyond "she is so mom-coded to *insert a character*!"

bc no, she isn't. the fandoms' parentification of female characters is often off-putting, but especially when it's characters like lin who do not want to be parents.

in fact, imo, that's one of the major facts about her we should consider. toph was a very detached parent and we can assume that she wanted to have a legacy more than to be a parent, and lin recognized that in both toph and herself.

also, i feel like the parentification of female characters is reductive and limiting to their relationships, generally speaking. the same goes with always trying to put female characters in familial boxes.

when you think about it, there are so many parallels between zuko and lin... i can't believe it was not pointed out as tlok was airing.

one side of face scarred by a family member? stained relationship with a younger sister? initially trying to catch/arrest the avatar? the visual parallels when they were healing? brooding but honorable? obsessed with proving themselves to their famed parents?

lin's expressions and sharp facial features being very similar to old zuko's?

young lin sharing the same voice actress as azula, zuko's sister?

and i think it just adds so much to lin's story. it's so sad but also, almost understandable that toph didn't want her and lin to lose their freedom, so she kept it a secret.

lin's father being zuko instead of some nice guy nobody would actually ADD to lin's backstory and trauma, bc it would allow for more tragic irony.

having zuko in her life would have made things easier for her, he would have understood her well and given her a good guidance, but she didn't.

and while there is this loss of the life she could have had, there is also this liberation from the confinement lin would have experienced had she been known as zuko's daughter.

with lin's father actually being "kento," it would mean that all the pain she had suffered due to not knowing her father's identity was pretty much for nothing...

not to mention, it's not like toph elaborated on why she kept this regular kento rando a secret or told lin where to find him. there was no emotional resolve between lin and toph in that scene, and lin didn't react like she really believed her as she didn't give any weight to what toph said. so, i wouldn't exactly take toph's comment at face value.
