The 13th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 13th August 2026.
It’s short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.
After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.
If you think you might have friends and followers who’d be interested, please do reblog this blog post, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks. Every share is extremely helpful!
Survey URL: https://survey.gendercensus.com
The survey is open to anyone anywhere who speaks English and feels that the gender binary doesn’t fully describe their experience of themselves and their gender(s) or lack thereof.
Thank you so much!

bro i LOVE indigenous fusion music i love it when indigenous people take traditional practices and language and apply them in new cool ways i love the slow decay and decolonisation of the modern music industry
Another one for Inuit artists is Piqsiq! Two sisters who’ve been doing traditional throat singing since they were kids. They make some really gorgeous, eerie, atmospheric stuff. Highly recommend watching this video of them performing live a cappella using a looping machine, because they might be the coolest people on the planet actually
For anyone into North Asian and Central Asian folk music, there's this incredible Siberian folk-pop band called Otyken! The group is mostly women and they're from multiple indigenous groups in Siberia, with songs being sung in their range of different languages. They're so much fun and their music videos are amazing!
i'll go ahead and recommend The Halluci Nation (formerly known as A Tribe Called Red), an EDM group from First Nations Ontario that do really cool fusions of First Nations music with dubstep, moombahton, and hip hop.
I really really really appreciate people who share videos on posts like these, because almost without a doubt every time I love the music but I’ve never got the spoons to click on links and look through a bunch of music or worse google the artist I always end up too overwhelmed to start and I hate that
Haven't seen Belle Sisoski here yet so here we go: she's the current Artist of Year for BURO impact Awards. She's from Malaysia and knows how to play an insane amount of ethnic instruments and mixes them with her own voice. She does covers and her own songs, mixes ethnic instruments with Techno and shows the process. And she's also a live DJ at 19!
And one of her own:
Oh and of course there's also the HU and Bloodywood for people who like more rock and metal mixed in:
So, I am very very late to this party. I don't even know why, but hey better late than never as they say, right? Anyway, last weekend I watched Sram S.3 and... I'm intrigued. Is it my fave remake? No (Druck will always have my heart), but is it one of the most interesting with one of the Isaks I most wanted to wrap up and just hug? Yes, definitely. Does it also have some really interesting cinematography to pique my little nerd heart? Yepppppppp. So let's take a little walk through this season while I watch it for the second time, shall we?
Clip one. (I think? This opening was a bit confusing around where it fits)
Having just returned to this part, it's fascinating to remember that at the start of this season, Lovro was actually really chipper. Like, he enjoyed hanging out with his mates, just goofing around and being so silly. He was cool and open and fun and just had this energy and vibe that was exuberant and just plain cool. Isak was a bit like this, but it was fairly obvious that it was a facade. I wonder if the 'this is found footage' vibes of this part helps. The hair dyeing made me curl up a bit inside with how randomly it was done but, at least in the end it turned out pretty well. Interesting choice though - Lovro used to be really into colour (and maybe is again???? with the pink hair I've been seeing), so this 'normal' brown is a choice. It does serve to make him much more visually vulnerable in later scenes so it works, even if it seems a strange choice for this character. Also, Ema is really really GORGEOUS. I can't get over how stunning she is, and also how even this early she has such different vibes from the other Emmas I know (which tbh is really only Skam's Emma and Druck's Sara). She's cool, she dresses like a queen, and has a wonderful air of 'I don't give a damn about any of you' which she kind of keeps throughout and which makes her a really interesting foil to Lovro. It's already kind of obvious that this isn't going to play out like either Emma or Sara did.
Clip two.
First, I really love this setting. It looks so cool with the graffiti and the way it's all framed. Unfortunately, the plot is a bit of a blah sort of rehash of the cat tongue etc conversation of Skam and it's just kind of not that interesting. The missing thing, of course, is that Isak saw Even during this conversation in Skam, but we have yet to see Ivan. That glance during the alienating sex talk was what made that conversation in Skam make sense, but here it just doesn't. Apart from a small moment where Filip says something Mario does is 'gross' which feels like a subtle hint to him finding Lovro 'disgusting' later on. I've seen some commentary that he was a good friend in these early episodes, but it's interesting that he goes so quickly to words like this about his mates. Anyway, things pick up when Ema arrives and Lovro is still quite upbeat compared to how he becomes later in the season (eg 'I had to hold Jakov's hair' etc). This is quite Isak-esque I guess, with the 'player' excuses and the barbs at his friends, but where Isak was already fairly obviously wearing a mask, Lovro seems to be genuinely like this.
Clip three.
I love the fact that in this version, the parents are more present. I'm told this is because teens living alone wouldn't fly in a country like Croatia, and it's nice that it sets a different tone for the whole relationship with Lovro and his mother. As much as I love the idea of seeing inside teen lives without adults around, I find it super interesting to see this new thing play out. I'm aware that other versions do have more adults in them, but I haven't properly interacted with most of them. It's also really interesting how this shot of them is framed, with him blurry in the foreground and her on the other side of a 'barrier' in the door, but in focus. The film nerd in me wants to read this as him not really knowing and being sure about who he is. Anyway, they seem to have a sweet relationship even if she already seems to be projecting her post-divorce issues onto her baking and is overly upset when she burns something.
Clip four. (again, I think... since I didn't watch this live I don't know if this first bit went with the previous clip or the next one).
Lovro by himself in what he eventually tells us is his spot. I'm sure everyone has already gone into how barren and unwelcoming this place is with it's grey, brutalist aesthetic and run down chairs etc etc, and it seems that even though Lovro has this sort of thing with Ema now, he feels a bit alienated from the people around him in pairs. So perhaps this run down thing does reflect how he feels at this time. He's already a lot quieter than he has appeared in the very first clip or two so maybe this is finally allowing us, the audience, into who he really is. I said often in the discussions around Matteo, just how uncomfortable an extreme close up made the audience with the scenes with Sara and Matteo, but here we see that with Lovro by himself. It almost feels claustrophobic even though he's outside. Symbolic of him being trapped maybe? I also really love the photo session with Ema. Already they have a really lovely relationship and the first time I watched this I said, much like I did with Matteo and Sara, that they would make really lovely friends but not romantic partners. I stand by that now that I've seen the whole thing. It's also interesting that he mentions being embarrassed by having people seeing him standing out and doing something not 'normal' which is clearly foreshadowing the way he keeps telling Ivan that he's embarrassed later.
Clip five.
A fairly short one, this one, but I love the way Ema just slots into the group of friends. They're all really engaged and interested in each other. Including Lovro who again seems well integrated into this friend group and relaxed and easy. It's becoming quite clear that his issue isn't 'I don't know how to properly connect with my life in a genuine way' but is a much harder 'Once I realise that I'm gay, how do I stay connected to the people who are the most important to me' and sadly the answer later is 'for some of them, you just can't and for others it may be somewhat strained' - realistic but very sad. Also, very shallowly, I again love Ema's vibe and how much she stands out by being her own self. Maybe someone Lovro could learn from...
Clip six.
More lovely vibes around Lovro and Ema. I adore the way this show is developing their connection, slowly but in a lovely realistic way. This is probably a good time to say that I'm appreciating the more muted, grounded tones of this version. Skam itself was quite light (mostly), well lit and quite a tourist brochure for Oslo, not often getting into a more gritty side. I loved it, don't get me wrong, but I far prefer the Druck/Sram way of using a darker, muted tone. In this one, it was really striking later when the sets became softer, more warmly lit and a strong contrast to these earlier scenes while staying muted and grounded. But we'll get to that later. Anyway, the colours and vibes really suit the way Lovro's relationships are developed or developing. I do think that this attempted intimacy between the two is done well. Ema is so chill! Honestly, I love her and I'm super happy that this relationship appears to have resolved more cordially than some of the other Isak/Emma ones. These two vibe and I want them to be platonic bffs.
Clip seven.
Lovro and this little group of friends are just so lovely together. I love this Eva and how much more present she is in Lovro's life at this time. It's really refreshing actually. I have no idea what happened in s2 since I don't enjoy the s2 relationships, so refused to watch, but whatever it was this relationship is obviously less damaged than most of the Evas and Isaks. I also really love the bet between Jakov and Eva - again, I know this pairing always try to keep friendly after everything, but there's often a strain between them but these two seem genuinely to have a good relationship.
Clip eight.
Given that it seems like a very unusual thing for teens to be living apart from home in Croatia, I think this little 'you can get Nora's room when she leaves' bit is a really interesting way to get that freedom while still being somewhat realistic to the situation. It's also good that it's made clear later that Lovro doesn't have permission for this, and that he's lying about where he is to his mother. I mean, not good that he does it, but a good way to get him the gay flatmate the storyline kind of needs while still being true to the culture.
Clip nine.
First Ivan sighting!! It's really interesting that Lovro is 'wow what an interesting guy' as he arrives on his little bike, when he's so covered up that there's no hope of even knowing who it is. Still, once they get a good look it makes sense that he's intrigued even while the others are being dicks (is that mostly Filip? Is this another foreshadowing of him being just not as decent as the others?). Ivan holds himself differently to others around him. He doesn't respond to the pizza barbs (at least I think he doesn't; it's a bit dark to see on my computer who's speaking when), so to someone who's used to this easy banter and everyone joining in joking comments (he was even 'good one' when Jakov laughed about his parents divorce) this would stand out. It's a totally different air of mystery to Even, but you can see why it would be intriguing.
Clip ten.
I really like the party scenes in this show. I think maybe it's a combination of the 'found footage' and the way that they do genuinely seem to be real people enjoying themselves. I'm used to this sort of material being on the instagrams etc of the characters, so it's interesting to see it in the actual main clips. It changes the dynamics a bit, and makes it a bit less immersive as a 'peek into real lives' thing, but it makes up for it by being really cool and enabling a real insight into any differences between 'real' characterisation and 'faked for social media' characterisation within the actual show itself. But Lovro, my darling angel, what was that puking into a bowl and then just leaving it behind? That bothers me even more than the usual weed stashing... on the other hand, immediately demanding a ride from Ivan? Fun and different. Love the confidence. He definitely seems like a less reserved Isak than some of the others we've seen. Which makes a lot of what happens later very interesting as he almost loses this boldness as he comes to grips with who he is.
Whew. Sorry that was very long, but I do like to get my thoughts in order and I am kind of in love with this version. There's something really nice about the way these characters interact that makes even the similarities with Skam (mostly) make sense. I find some versions too close and some redone scenes almost showhorned in because they were in the og, but the choices made here don't do that (apart from the cat tongue discussion scene). Anyway, this was fun - watching again and knowing where he gets to is fascinating in a whole different way to most of the other Isaks.
It's been approximately 1000 years since I popped in here, but hi anyway. It's schools pride week here in Aotearoa NZ and as I run a pride group at the school I work in, we've been super busy with events and planning etc. Sadly, for the first time in the 11 years I've been in charge of this group, this year there have been attacks on our decorations and our flag is very ripped and sad looking after multiple people have pulled it down. We keep putting it back up, but it's so sad that we've come to a point in this country that it feels like acceptance is going backwards. The state of the flag is like a very pointed representation of the state of queer acceptance in Aotearoa.
Because of this , when I finally ended up watching s3 of Sram this last week it felt like a very timely version. The usual beats are all there, of course, but there's a really interesting undertone around acceptance and homophobia that hits differently to the other versions (at least the ones I've seen). It's almost like it wasn't the right time for me to watch it til now.
Anyway, I'm really tempted to rewatch and do my usual commentary because a) I really enjoyed it and b) I enjoy having a record, and c) it's just different enough to what I think of as 'usual Skam' that I'm keen to get into it and look under its hood. Am I belatedly getting a new obsession? Mayyyyybe...
It's been slow here (school break and sickness combined bleh) so I decided to give in and watch Skam France finally. Well s3 anyway. I'm on episode 3 and here are my thoughts so far (bear in mind that I have literally only watched Skam and Druck so far so those are my frames of reference):
I very much like Lucas. He seems much softer than Isak and more engaged in his life than Matteo and I'm enjoying the new take on the character. He'll never overtake Matteo in my affections but I like this vibe. I really like that he genuinely seems to be happy to help the girls with the common room. It's a nice change.
Alexia is fabulous. She's probably my favourite Chris (apart from the original and even then she may be close to neck and neck) and I love the bi storyline for her, and liked that the 'telling off' of Chloe for being homophobic was her rather than the Even character this time. I also really really like Daphne who is much less irritating than either Vilde or Kiki were at this point. I grew to appreciate the other two a lot, but at this point I was so annoyed by them (probably because both Isak and Matteo were). Imane is also brilliant (loved the tampon thing). So consider me properly taken with this girl squad so far.
Elliot seems... interesting. Like, he hasn't been in it so much but he has a nice energy. I'm looking forward to getting to know him better.
I do not like the boy squad. Arthur is the best of them but he's still not doing it for me. Yann seems very distanced and not much involved with Lucas which feels weird considering that they're supposed to be best friends? Right? And ugh Basile. He's just ... yeah I don't like him. He's as offensive as magnus but without the charm. I hope they don't actually put Daphne with him or if they do that he does some major growing up first. Her reactions to him are some of my favourite; she's so exasperated by his childishness.
I am enjoying the little differences between this and the original. It feels like it's much closer than Druck was, but it does have its own little moments which are its own and that's super fun. I'm interested to see where it's going to go.
Oof it's getting really not-nice for Lucas hmm. I really really didn't like the way his flatmates talked about him being 'not really' part of them. I get that his rent hasn't been as regular etc, but we see him trying to reach his father about it and that seemed really harsh. Also making him sleep on the couch seemed not very nice. So tbh when we had the 'gay gay' conversation I wasn't as taken aback by what Mika said than I was with either Eskild or Hans. The relationship wasn't there and so this just felt like more of the same way Lucas has always been treated by this character.
This first kiss scene was a bit creepy. Like, I don't know if we're supposed to think of it as charming or something, but I found Elliot to be ... unsettling ... here. And not in a good way. I dunno. There are moments when the way he is with Lucas is very cute and there are others where I feel like he's quite creepy. I'm still on the fence about him. I definitely don't feel the same tension between fragility and assurance we had with Even.
Lucas continues to charm me. The actor has a very appealing puppy-ish quality which is really nice, and the way he looks at Elliot; he's so smitten and it's very cute. I think he acts very well and does a lot with this much more depressing version we have. The 'crazy' comment did hit hard though
The 'walking into school through the gauntlet' scene is much harsher here too, though it appears to be more of an anxiety dream than reality. But then Chloe is really harsh too - I understand that she's angry, hurt and feeling betrayed, but telling him she can make up whatever she likes about him and tell anyone? yeah, this outing is worse than either of the other two and they were both bad enough.
The girls continue to delight me. Daphne is glorious, Manon seems very cool and I really really like that Lucas seems more happy to help and interact with them than Isak did. They seem very nice, very fun and like a great set of friends. I'd like it if he keeps hanging with them. I don't know where this meeting with the sales guy came from but it's fun and I enjoyed this little moment with them. I also like what I'm seeing of Lucas and Manon's relationship; they feel like very nice supportive friends. Which Lucas needs.
Which brings me to this thing with Yann. I said before he doesn't seem as tight with Lucas, like i don't really feel they're best friends (this is possibly partly because I haven't seen s1 and 2, but I also hadn't for either Skam or Druck and those boys still felt like friends) - and this reaction to him coming out? No. No thank you. In a sea of crap, this is supposed to be a lovely moment for Isak/Matteo/Lucas. A moment where they know their best friend has their back and they're ok even if everything else is shit. And this just wasn't. Like I get that Lucas is basically saying he's told everyone but Yann (like he hasn't but I can see where he could get that idea from this ramble) but still... shitty way to act particularly when he was all 'you have to talk to us' Anyway, I didn't like this ending. I can't imagine what this must have been like to watch live with no chance of clicking the next episode.
This episode 7 was (mostly) really wonderful. I don't usually cry at stuff, but I did when Lucas feels so alone and so broken and so devastated by everything happening around him. His flatmates were wonderful in this instance (makes me wish they'd been better in other episodes). It was just a really powerful scene - probably one of the best I've seen in all Skam. It's up there with Skam's 'you are not alone' scene and the hotel scene and Druck's moment where David comes out to Matteo, among others.
I wasn't a huge fan of the 'let's show you we know you're gay without saying it' scene with Arthur and Basile, but I did appreciate the stuff with Yann. It felt a little low key for how devastated Lucas was, and I still don't like the change in episode 6 but overall it was good. It was nice to see some actual conversation between them and it was good that Yann acknowledged that it might be something with him that made Lucas unwilling to open up.
I still really love Lucas as a character but I'm on the fence about Elliot. He's come some way but I think maybe the issue is that he was 'creepy' and 'mysterious' for a bit too long before we got all this ending stuff. I've seen gifs etc of the later seasons and I know he gets more endearing, but I dunno. He's not my fave here, despite Lucas being so clearly head over heels infatuated with him. It did make the manic episode scene less impactful imo - I just don't have the same connection to him as I did to Even and so while I can see Lucas feeling really disturbed by this strange conversation, it doesn't feel any different to the first kiss stuff for example.
I haven't really talked about the aesthetics much because tbh I prefer the palettes etc of Skam and Druck, but some of the shots in this section were beautiful. There's one in the common room after they find the 'ass' on the wall that was particularly lovely. The blues maybe?
I really like the emphasis on Lucas's other relationships - particularly with the girls. The moments he shares with Manon in particular are really beautiful. They're two hurting, fragile people who make good connections together. Manon appeals to me more than either Noora or Mia as well. There's something vulnerable about her that I feel was missing from the others. Charles sounds like a prize asshole though. I always dislike this character so maybe that's not a shock. Overall, I think it's fascinating that I like the scenes and relationships that are added more than the ones from the og. It feels like they add depth and nuance to the characters. This scene where Elliot describes his illness to Lucas is probably the highlight of his character - apart from when they hang out the first time and he watches Lucas play piano.
Biggest takeaway - I love Lucas and Daphne, and Manon to a lesser extent and I'm glad I met them. I still don't think Basile is really great but he does appear to have grown up a bit and so he's starting to be ok for Daphne. She is the biggest win for me in this whole season. I really really like her and her crusade. She's fab. This isn't my favourite version but there were some really great parts to it which I enjoyed so over all I'm glad I watched it. I really appreciate that even more so than og Skam, it places an emphasis on other parts of life - other friendships than just your bros and your boyfriend. And the very final scene was lovely and a really nice ending.
For all the skam fans who watch only season 3 and will be tuning in now that season 3 of SRAM is airing next there’s a couple things you should know first -
Croatias version of Isak, Lovro, is a skaterat with a dyed blue mullet who does molly.
He is also like surprisingly fun so far for an Isak.. he loves to party and is super friendly and welcoming to people.

I've been strolling down nostalgia lane for the last two days and finally fetched up watching NMTD and LLL again. It's been literal years and yet here I am feeling all the feelings and remembering how it was when it all was going live and how the waiting was always so much.
Some things still bugged me but overall it was a nice time and I remembered how much I love most of the characters, particularly Peter, Hero and my beloved Balthy. Maybe I need to go looking for fic to read again...
