my ex boyfriend is an abusive alcoholic. he's raped me, tried to medically neglect me, stranded me at our new apartment alone with no food and a clogged toilet, and most recently refuses to pay any rent and is content to allow me to become homeless despite legal obligation
i have been granted a hud/section 8 housing voucher, but to use it a unit must pass inspection
the apartment i applied for didn't pass, and needed repairs. the landlord told me he'd accept the first applicant that could pay first month rent and a huge deposit. the housing authority told me i'd lose my voucher if i didn't proceed with this exact unit
originally, i was supposed to be on my own. but i was shoved between a rock and a hard place with the voucher and deposit. i couldn't afford the deposit despite friends crowdfunding for me, so... i asked my boyfriend for help
he needed a place to go himself, because he broke his lease bringing me and my cats in. (i was unaware of this, and had no suspicion he'd do something that would compromise his 2 bed/bath apartment)
my doctor also prescribed caregiver after my hospitalization so it seemed mutually beneficial from a financial standpoint, even if i wasn't enthused about it
we couldn't afford movers, so over the course of march we'd been moving things by the carload ourselves. the queen bed was too big, so the night before last he informed me he was dumping it while he had help from a friend to move it. i had a bedframe and mattress from the last place i'd lived, but it had already been taken to the new place. i thought we'd agreed i'd basically move in to the new place early so i'd have somewhere to sleep
come saturday night, i messaged him that the toilet was clogged. he refused to bring a snake, and told me i was using him because i don't hug and kiss him enough. (i'm a csem victim, asexual, and autistic and don't like physical affection)
he's decided he doesn't want to proceed with the unit, and it hasn't passed the inspection, so my voucher doesn't cover it yet. i can't afford the rent out of pocket, and i'm broke because i'm disabled. we agreed he'd pay rent until the voucher kicked in, then he would be added to it as my caregiver, because he'd take me to medical appointments, ensure i get my medication on time, ensure i'd and bathe, etc.
but that ship has sailed. now i'm left in a lurch, and desperately need help. a large portion of the security and pet deposits were nonrefundable, so all the previous effort would go to waste if i can't stay
because i was recently hospitalized, i don't know how i'll survive homelessness. my cats are prescribed emotional support animals, and losing them would be devastating

after this, he proceeded to continuously ignore me when i'd bring up rent, that he's on the lease, and going to the bank to pay the landlord
he never responded to the above and then proceeded to act like nothing happened
he didn't respond to any of these except agreement to let me get my cats with the help of someone from my weekly ywca meetings
he is now proceeding to STILL not respond or accept responsibility despite me explaining to him in great detail what the repercussions will be if he doesn't help pay rent. he continues to say "you"
as of august 29, i don't have enough to pay the rent on my own, but i am keeping all of these text messages to present in eviction court if it comes to that. i also intend to take my ex to small claims court
the landlord's maintenance guy also """plunged the toilet""" after leaving me without a working one for five days, and after i was informed there was a problem with the entire complex's pipes. i was not here, so i can't vet if it was true. they """plunged""" without permission, and then sent me an invoice after the fact. i also can't afford this fee, and find it predatory in nature. the maintenance company is owned by the landlord
i have reached out to legal aid to ask about the legality of the landlord handling the situation like this. i will reach out to them again if i get an eviction notice
My friend Erin is finally in her own apartment, safe with her cats, and just needs a little help to stay stable another month until her housing voucher kicks in.
the landlord told me he's going to proceed with a notice to quit then eviction process so this has become even more dire
so folks who may not have been in this situation understand how bad it is, it means:
i will be homeless, which will result in me losing my emotional support animals and possessions
there is no local shelter i can get to, it's 45 minutes away in a town with no bus line; even if i got there i wouldn't have a means to get other places i would need to go
i will have to drop out of college when i'm supposed to graduate in spring, which is in turn going to throw off any possible career for at least a year since certain classes are only offered certain terms, if i'm even able to return as a student at all
i will still owe the rent, then the accrued fees ($15 per day late fee, then additional 1% late fee for the invoice), and then the court fees
if the judge rules in the landlords favor, and he will because it's true that i haven't paid, then all of my assets such as my bank account will be seized for the purpose of repayment. i bank with paypal. if someone wanted to send me money for dinner via paypal for example then it would still immediately go to the landlord and i'd have no means of getting help in the future
because i won't have an address, i won't be able to utilize the local ride service that exclusively provides transport to medical appointments, which means i will no longer get treatment for my conditions. not getting treatment for my conditions means they'll get worse
because i am disabled and because winter is coming, i don't know if i can physically survive these consequences. since i was recently hospitalized for a nervous breakdown and suicide attempt, and therefore i don't know if i can mentally and emotionally handle these consequences. the local humane society is at capacity, so i don't know if my cats will survive either. i'm sorry that this sounds so awful, but that's my reality. it's at a point where losing this apartment really does put our survival in jeopardy

She moved to a new state which meant she no longer had her license, therapist, doctors etc. which exacerbated her disabilities. Unfortunately, the new living situation turned sour as her landlord became neglectful in his property upkeep which resulted in Erin receiving several injuries. He also became abusive and forbid her 3 cats from leaving her bedroom, as well as stealing food and toiletries from Erin. During this time, her cats developed health issues that require regular medication and monitoring (diabetes, urinary issues) and her own disabilities worsened due to lack of medical care.
The landlord announced his intention to kick her out in May 2024. Erin had applied for Section 8 housing and was attempting to move into a new place, but this fell through due to lack of funds. She had to move into her boyfriend’s apartment to avoid homelessness, however her boyfriend is abusive and neither she nor her cats are safe there.
Due to a severe mental health crisis in mid-July which resulted in a suicide attempt, Erin has now sought inpatient treatment at a local hospital. She has found another potential apartment to rent, however the deposit and fees are not covered by the Section 8 assistance and must be paid upfront. We are desperately hoping to raise this money so that she can secure this apartment and have a safe place to live. She cannot remain at her boyfriend’s because aside from his abuse, his landlord will not allow her and her cats to remain in the unit. She is unfortunately not able to live with any of us because we are internet friends spread worldwide.

my landlord has been cheating on his husband, and their relationship is rocky. he also has a massive spending addiction according to his husband. his spending addiction is making him not want to perform the actual duties of a landlord, because investment costs are cutting into his shopping spree funds
ex, he is illegally not fixing a leak in the shower of the upstairs tenants, and claims the costs are more than their rent. he told them to "figure it out, or get the fuck out." (verbatim.) he also told me it would be cheaper for him to not have tenants at all bc his utility bills would be smaller. he then left it to ME to inform another tenant to leave (then gaslit me and denied it in front of his husband when his husband questioned it)
in his words, we have 90 days to leave. i am disabled and a full time student and have been living on my fafsa returns, and the last job i had made one of my disabilities worse to the point i've had intensive physical therapy (several hours several times a week) and am likely going to have to undergo surgery
i'm also mi/nd, so even on a good day i'm not very well equipped to handle things, and the recent stress has also caused my therapist to see me several times a week in lieu of institutionalization
all that said, i'm not in a good spot physically or mentally, hence the best i can do right now is offer some of my skills on kofi
i'm currently working with my state's vocational rehab to try and find a suitable job until i can get my degree, but even then i simply would not be able to afford the costs of a sudden move in the timeframe i've got to work with
my immediate goal has changed. i found out that you can do go-at-your-own-pace gigs like doordash on a scooter! this would let me work within my limitations to earn towards the rest of the move, and more independence after
their limit is 50cc, which means i can get a scooter for roughly $1,000 or under! i also need to cover fees to renew my license (i haven't had a vehicle so i've had no need to before now) and get insurance (roughly $100 annually)
