dalliance
(noun) As one of the most beautiful words in the English dictionary, dalliance is defined as a brief love affair, a flirtation or a fleeting love. A dalliance also has connotations of amorous toying, example flirting without mindfulness and stringing a person along. Inevitably, Gatsbyâs ephemeral relationship with Daisy in The Great Gatsby comes forth in our mind. Though the word dalliance is delicately beautiful, its meaning is quite bittersweet; Daisyâs selfish, coquettish nature led to Gatsbyâs demise. What we have learned is that a dalliance with the presence of unrequited love is lethal. (via wordsnquotes)
random, but shoutout to all the langblrs that post vocab lists, grammar lessons, resource lists, or anyone else who posts original content.
Youâre helping the community & breaking down the myth that language learning has to be an expensive endeavor, and ily for that.
Learning more than one language is studying X language and suddenly wondering how you say that Y language
My german friend doesnât believe in Roombas
He thinks weâre making it up and hes very angry about it
Hes accusing us of making fake amazon pages
He thinks theyâre bullshit and says if we really had them why would we need maids
How do i tell him we mostly dont have maids
âBro, we donât have maids.â
So i said âonly rich people really have maidsâ
And he said âwhy?â
âMaids are expensiveâ
âJust pay a kid 10⏠an hour to cleanâ
Thats EXPENSIVE and also illegal, buddy
Child labor laws are a thing
He still thinks roombas are a lie
So it turns out in germany they use vacuum cleaners for like, the drapes and shit
So he didnt understand that roombas only clean the floor
He was angry because he thought we were claiming we had wall crawling robots
Now hes mad about dusters because vacuums are more efficient so why would we use feathers on a stick
Oh man donât tell him about Swiffer brand
I did and he is literally crying with rage
Like i can hear his voice quivering
Holy shit my guy you are actually ruining this mans will to live.
How do you give instructions/commands in German? For example saying "Be quiet " or "Go outside"
Usually you would use something called the imperative. I wonât go excessively into detail but forming the imperative is relatively easy - there are 3 (âŠtechnically 4 actually) ways of doing it.
Du = informal, 1 personIhr = informal, many peopleSie = formal 1 person or many peopleWir = a group of people including yourself.âSo Iâll use 2 verbs - spielen and sein (cause sein once again is irregular) and show you how to form it.
Gehen
Du = Geh(e)! (Go!) - formed by taking the du form of verb and removing -st.Ihr = Geht! (Go [you lot]!) - formed by taking ihr form of the verb.Sie = Gehen Sie!  (Go [/you lot] !) - formed by taking Sie form of verb + Sie.Wir = Gehen wir (letâs play - normally Iâd just say âlass uns gehenâ) - formed by taking wir form + wir.
Sein
Du = Sei! (Be) - e.g. Sei still (be quiet)!Ihr = Seid! (Be [you lot]!) - e.g. Seid still (be quiet you lot)!Sie = Seien Sie! (Be [/you lot]!) - e.g. Seien Sie still (be quiet [/you lot])!Wir = Seien wir (Letâs be - normally âlass uns seinâ) - e.g. Seien wir still (letâs be quiet)!
Jus fyi, sometimes people add +e onto the ending of the du form (not for sein) - this is possible like 70% of the time; with some verbs (those that are âstrongâ) you cannot add this e.
â
With instructions that you write down e.g. on a to-do list, youâd normally just use the infinitve at the end of the sentence (whereas in English we use it at the beginning)
Ex: Den Gartenschlauch und den Rasensprenger anmachenTr: Turn on the garden hose and the sprinkler.
â
If youâd like to know more on the imperative Iâd greatly recommend this site:http://www.dartmouth.edu/~deutsch/Grammatik/Imperative/Imperativ.html
Hope this helps :)
(#7) German Prepositions - Aus
Following on from my series on modal particles (on hiatus for 2 more weeks), Iâll now be doing a series on the most common German prepositions.
What is a preposition?
Itâs a word, usually preceding (postposition = following), a noun that shows a relation between that noun and another element in that sentence. E.g. The cat is on the chair, I drove by the church, I danced with him.
==============================================================
Preposition: Aus
Case: Dative
#1 Referring to direction.
i) Out of (a place). Ex: Er kam aus dem Haus. (He came out of the house.)
ii) From (a place) - RE: aus vs. von - aus refers to origin (where one originated from) and its opposite is in. Whereas von refers to where one has travelled from (been at) and its opposite is zu. Ex: Er kommt aus Berlin. (He comes/originates from Berlin.) Ex: Er kommt von Berlin. (He is travelling from Berlin.)
#2 Referring to materials.
i) (Made) out of. Ex: âŠaus Holz. (âŠmade out of wood.)
#3 Cause/Motive/Reason
i) Used to denote either a cause, motive or reason. Ex: Ich tat es aus Mitleid! (I did it out of sympathy!)

Hope this helps!

Ok I think that should be enough.
those different essays that keep popping up tips
the âwhy you wanna come hereâ essay
mention a department you really like, a professor you really like, a lab you really like, a program you really like
sometimes aspects of the school like an extensive research program, an internship program, an interesting major, a school philosophy will stand out (for instance, one school i applied to prided itself on balancing the humanities with STEM, which was a big focus in my essay)
talk about your experience when you visited or how you heard about the school and all the good things
any articles you read on it will help, basically just research a lot, talk about your interview (if applicable), talk about their programs and unique points
it wouldnât be a bad idea to talk about your interests (briefly) and why that school is uniquely good for you
the âwhat do you want to studyâ essay
again, mention a field, or if undecided, then talk about diverse interests
if you have a specific field, talk about your experiences (like for engineering, i talked about robotics and my internship and how that shaped my career path)
overcoming challenges, discovering new interests, creating connections with others, and becoming a leader are all good things to mention here if possible
if you donât know what to study, thats totally ok, but talk about your different interests, maybe how you plan to proceed with finding a specific course of study, or talk about a program youâre interested in at the school
the âchallengeâ essay
this essay is a challenge
you really gotta come up with something pretty good or at least try to; try to find something that involves being a leader and taking action/responsibility or maybe going out of your comfort zone.
tell it like a story!! talk about the problem then how you resolved it (ideally it should be a challenge you resolved?? it could also be one that went unresolved but you have to be v careful in that case)
tl;dr show off your good aspects like leadership, keeping calm, trustworthiness, etc etc etc
the âtalk about something you havenât talked about essay
i usually used this one for any topic i wanted to talk about but didnt get the chance to
basically waht i mean is i had three main topics i wanted to hit in every application: my internship, my sport, my music. If i didnât get a chance to talk about one through an essay, Iâd use my talk about whatever essay to talk about it.
why is this double spaced
donât waste this!!! this is a pretty good spot to show how youâre unique and tell a very âyouâ story to distinguish yourself from all the other applicants.Â
but also you can def use like another essay you wrote for another prompt for another school here if you find it appropriate -always make sure to reuse topics and ideas when possible~~
anyways if you guys have any questions about essays or in general, hmuâim p stressed about my own essay anyways :/
why did this post show up at the wrong time hahaÂ
if tumblr masterposts donât prepare me for college applications, i donât know what will

i) âexcept (for)â or âbesidesâ. Ex: Niemand auĂer seinem Vater hat ihn gesehen. (No-one except his father had seen him.)
ii)Â âout(side) ofâ - not very common now - usually occurs w/o article! Ex: Die Maschine ist auĂer Betrieb! The machine is out of order!
