While in New York recently my friend Eric invited me to a studio critique at The Drawing Center in Soho. I had the great fortune to view the work of Louise Despont and sit in on the session, led by Aaron Taylor Kuffner, who collaborated on the installation. Louise spent a year in Bali creating the drawings, made with pencil on old ledger paper. Aaron’s Gamelatron, a robotic gamelon orchestra, creates a soundscape for the work. Aaron has also lived in Indonesia. Energy Scaffolds and Information Architecture is worth seeing in person!

A necklace I made recently started getting attention for one of its beads- a large, irregularly shaped brown ceramic beauty created by the late Doyle Lane. While working at Ritual Adornments in the early 2000′s I got the opportunity to meet Mr. Lane, who periodically brought new batches of his beads to the store. The man was incredibly modest, for I didn’t find out until recently the breadth of his work. Current fascination in Lane’s pots, wall tiles and installations is due to a 2014 retrospective held at Reform Gallery in Los Angeles. Here is my collection of Doyle Beads, purchased at Ritual Adornments around 2002. The Astronaut Necklace, with its planetary Doyle Bead was made by two local women at a workshop I held last year.

From our road trip last winter. While driving east on Route 40 out of Albuquerque, we started seeing signs for the old Route 66, which was replaced by Interstate 40. Sections of the 66 remain as the Main Streets of the towns it used to connect. Santa Rosa is 115 miles east of Albuquerque. It was the most gutted of the route 66 towns we visited, as evidenced by the generations of businesses that have come and gone. You can see how Almanza’s Mexican tried to make a go of it in the old KFC/ Long John Silvers’ building. Beyond it a Days Inn sign has been blacked out.

Webs. Life has been a bit hectic and chaotic as of late. When I finally come up for air, I have my artwork. I envision these to envelop an entire room, interwoven with drawn elements.

Catskill Creek, taken from the Uncle Sam Bridge in Catskill Village. The tiny boat dock extends from the old Union Mills building, now home to Rob Kalin’s Catskill Mill project. In the second photo I swung my view over to the west side of the creek, just across from the Mill. Photos were taken in late July.

While Bryan and I were in LA last winter, I started working on some new drawings for a forthcoming show at Greene County Council on the Arts. These are the pieces as I was framing them.

I am working on a new endeavor with Matt Bua: the Catskill Mapping Project. A group of us have been meeting at Bryan’s Studio to work on collaborative maps of Catskill. We are using blank satellite maps as guides as we walk the village and learn the detail of its streets and trails, filling in information as we go along. We take that info to the meetings and share the knowledge with friends as we work on larger maps together. Come join us this Friday at 8pm: 65 W. Bridge St. in Catskill or contact me for more info.

Coffee Ern's in Parker, AZ, right over the California border in the dry, hot desert. That is green chile right there on a cheeseburger, (brilliant!) with finely chopped, well-seasoned coleslaw and super-fried steak fries.

The End in Yucca Valley! Got to meet Superstar Kime Buzzelli, who creates such a magical environment and makes everyone feel welcome. I wish we had more time to poke around in the town! Next time!!!

Still in LA although I'm dying to get back east. Bryan has a little more work to do on the car and he is taking advantage of his friend Dennis's shop to make some repairs. Believe it or not we drove cross country in a 20-year old Suzuki Sidekick that swam in salt water during hurricane sandy and hit a deer before we left. My lovely partner is able to fix anything himself and has spent the past two years bringing the car back to life. I'm almost up to date with the the cross-country posts. So... after we left Las Cruces the next destination was Phoenix, where Bryan's brother and his fam live. We were hungry by the time we arrived in Tuscon and really lucked out on a lunch/brunch spot. As you might be able to tell, 5 Points was an all-around hit. Bryan ordered the huevos rancheros and I had eggs benedict, which is served on a gluten-free english muffin. Both plates were drizzled lightly with olive oil before the food was put on them. I made a point to photograph the coffee because I liked the way it was served- with the spoon in the cup and a tiny pitcher of cream on the side.

When Bryan and I visit Los Angeles we stay with his sister and her family in San Pedro. Stacy and her husband Chuck live around the corner from a local institution, Alvas, a music store and performance center where they are both very involved. We were lucky to see Chuck perform last night at Alvas with blues musician Tracy Niles.
